You can run a website-screenshot MCP server on an Indian Linux hosting plan if that plan supports Node.js 20 or newer, a persistent process, the browser runtime and its dependencies, and a network path from your MCP client to the server. The official Playwright MCP project provides a headless HTTP setup on port 8931, with the MCP endpoint at /mcp. A plan described as “Linux” or “Node.js” does not guarantee those capabilities, so check its limits before installing anything.
What you need before setting up Playwright MCP
Playwright MCP lets an MCP-compatible AI client control a browser and request actions such as opening a page and taking a screenshot. On a headless Linux server, the key requirements are not just a Node.js runtime: the host must also allow the browser to run and let the intended client reach the MCP endpoint.

- Node.js: The Playwright MCP getting-started documentation lists Node.js 20 or newer as a prerequisite. Playwright MCP getting started
- Browser installation: Browser downloads occur automatically on first use. Make sure the service account has the required storage and can access the installation location.
- Persistent execution: The hosting plan must allow a process to keep running. Confirm which service-management mechanism, if any, the provider permits.
- Network access: Your MCP client needs a private route, tunnel, or suitably protected reverse proxy to the service. Do not assume an arbitrary inbound port is available.
- Resources and operations: Check RAM, CPU, disk, process limits, logging, restart, and update options. The official setup documentation does not give a universal RAM or CPU minimum.
Check whether your Indian hosting plan can run it
Ask the provider about the exact plan, not just the product category. Shared and managed plans can restrict background processes, browser dependencies, or inbound ports; VPS plans generally offer more server-level control, but they also leave more maintenance to you.
| Capability | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Node.js version | Can you use Node.js 20 or newer on this plan? |
| Browser and libraries | Can the browser runtime and required operating-system dependencies be installed or used? |
| Persistent process | May the MCP server remain running, and what process manager or hosting feature is supported? |
| Port and routing | Can the client reach the service through a private route, tunnel, or protected proxy? Can access be restricted to intended clients? |
| Resource and process limits | What limits apply, particularly with simultaneous browser sessions? There is no universal official minimum to compare against. |
| Maintenance | Can you inspect logs, restart after failure, and update Node.js, Playwright MCP, and browser components? |
Hostinger’s India product pages illustrate why the distinction matters: its materials distinguish managed Node.js app hosting from a self-managed Linux VPS with root access. Its support page says Web and Cloud ports are fixed and additional ports cannot be opened there, while pointing users who need full port control to VPS hosting. Node.js availability also varies by plan. These are Hostinger-specific examples, not rules for other providers; verify your plan’s current terms and capabilities directly. Set up the Playwright MCP HTTP server
1. Choose headless mode
A Linux server without a desktop display should run the browser in headless mode. The project documentation says the normal default is headed mode, so include --headless explicitly. Playwright MCP setup and headless mode
2. Start the standalone HTTP transport
With Node.js 20 or newer available, the documented basic command is:
Rank #2
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --headless --port 8931
The service’s MCP endpoint is /mcp; when the client and server share a host and network namespace, the documented client URL is http://localhost:8931/mcp. Playwright MCP configuration also documents a host option, including binding to 0.0.0.0 for container scenarios. Bind deliberately: listening on all interfaces does not provide access control. Apply network restrictions at the firewall, tunnel, or proxy layer so only intended clients can connect. See the configuration options and project README.
3. Keep the process running using a supported method
Use the persistent-process feature or service mechanism your provider actually supports. Commands differ by distribution and hosting plan; the official sources cited here do not establish a universal systemd, Docker, or control-panel procedure. Confirm the supported method with your host rather than assuming a particular setup will work.
4. Configure the MCP client
Configure your MCP client to use the endpoint reachable from that client. Use http://localhost:8931/mcp only when the client and server share the relevant host or network namespace. If they do not, replace localhost with the private hostname or address the client can reach, or use your secured tunnel or proxy URL. Connect, then ask the client to navigate to a site and take a screenshot. The installation guide demonstrates the screenshot interaction.
Secure the endpoint and keep it reliable
An MCP browser server can navigate websites on request. Treat it as a control surface, not a harmless image endpoint: the Playwright MCP project states, “Playwright MCP is not a security boundary.”

- Restrict endpoint access to the clients and users that need it; do not expose an unauthenticated service to the public internet.
- Prefer a private route or tunnel, or configure a reverse proxy and firewall to limit access. Confirm how the chosen setup handles authentication and allowed clients.
- Avoid using sensitive logged-in browser sessions in a context shared across untrusted clients.
- Plan how to inspect logs, restart the process, and keep the server and browser components updated.
- If using HTTP transport behind a proxy, verify that the proxy preserves the connection behavior and heartbeat traffic expected by the server.
For SSH access, eligibility and available access can vary by hosting plan; Hostinger’s support article is one provider-specific example. Hostinger SSH access information

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The command fails or the package cannot run | Node.js is absent or below the documented prerequisite. | Check the active runtime version and make sure the plan permits Node.js 20 or newer. |
| The browser does not start on the server | Headed mode was used on a host without a display, or browser installation/access failed. | Run with --headless; check first-use browser download access, storage, and permitted dependencies. |
| The client cannot connect | It is using localhost from a different machine, the service is not listening where expected, or a port/routing rule blocks it. |
Use the client-reachable hostname or address and verify the host’s port policy and network path. |
| The server stops after disconnecting | The plan may not permit persistent background processes, or the process was started in a session that ended. | Check the provider’s supported persistent-process mechanism; do not assume a panel, systemd, or container configuration is available. |
| A proxy connection is unstable | The proxy may not preserve the HTTP transport behavior or heartbeat traffic. | Review proxy timeouts and connection handling, then test the route from the actual MCP client. |
| The process runs but fails under multiple requests | Resource or process limits may be reached; there is no universal documented RAM/CPU threshold. | Review the host’s limits and logs under your expected concurrency, and reduce simultaneous browser work if needed. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need screenshots rather than a browser MCP server on your own host, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a simple capture, use cURL:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for API setup and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

What is the MCP endpoint for the documented Playwright HTTP setup?
It is /mcp; when client and service share a host and network namespace, the example URL is http://localhost:8931/mcp.
Does Playwright MCP documentation specify a universal minimum RAM or CPU?
No. Check your hosting plan’s limits and evaluate them against your own concurrency and browser workload.
