You can loop rain video and audio with FFmpeg on a Windows PC and send the output to YouTube Live. The loop runs only while FFmpeg, Windows, and your internet connection keep working, so a true always-on broadcast also needs monitoring and a recovery plan. This guide shows the setup, an adaptable example command, and the checks that matter before leaving it running.
Before you start: YouTube eligibility and files
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live streaming tips for current eligibility guidance. If you have not streamed from the channel before, allow time to complete verification and enable live streaming.

Prepare rain audio and visuals that you recorded or are licensed to use. A license should expressly allow live streaming on YouTube and cover any intended monetization, territories, duration, and replay or archive use. A Content ID or rights-management setting in YouTube Studio does not grant permission to use someone else’s recording.
- Install an FFmpeg build for Windows that includes the encoders and protocols you intend to use. The command below uses
libx264and AAC; confirm those are available in your build. - Choose either one video file with embedded sound or separate video and audio files. Separate inputs let you loop them independently, but you must map the intended streams correctly.
- Use a stable upload connection. Higher resolution and bitrate require more upstream capacity; leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the edge of your connection’s sustained rate.
Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then locate the stream URL and stream key in the encoder setup.
- Keep the key private. It is the credential that lets an encoder send content to your stream. Do not place a real key in a public script, screenshot, tutorial, or source repository.
- Copy the current server URL and key from Studio into your local FFmpeg output configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection; use the RTMPS endpoint if your FFmpeg build supports it.
- Before making the stream public, use the Live Control Room preview and test the audio, video, ingest health, and watch page. YouTube recommends arranging encoder setup in advance and monitoring stream quality. Its guides are Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the FFmpeg configuration with the replacement before streaming again.

Choose output settings that fit the source and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For keyframes, YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its settings are documented in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

A mostly static rain scene may need less video bandwidth than complex motion, but do not assume a lower rate will look or ingest well without testing it. Hardware encoders can reduce CPU load compared with software encoding, but availability, quality, and stability depend on your actual Windows hardware and FFmpeg build.

Build and test the FFmpeg command
This is an illustrative starting point, not a validated or run-on-Windows recipe. Replace the filenames and output URL with the actual files and current YouTube endpoint from Studio. The shown endpoint is RTMP; use the RTMPS server URL from Studio where supported by your FFmpeg build and certificate setup.

FFmpeg documents the option as an input option; keep it before the corresponding-i.-rereads the input at its native rate (equivalent to-readrate 1), which is useful when timing matters for live output. It is also placed before each input.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream from the first file;-map 1:a:0selects the first audio stream from the second. Change the mapping if your files differ.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP; at the example’s 30 fps that is two seconds. If you change frame rate, revisit the GOP length.- The bitrate values are examples, not proof of quality or a connection requirement. Select the output resolution and rates based on YouTube’s current guidance and a sustained upload test.
For one file containing both picture and sound, simplify to one looped input and map its video and audio streams from that input; verify the actual stream indexes first. Container duration, timestamp behavior, and loop transitions can vary with the files. Test at least one transition in an unlisted stream and listen for gaps, clicks, or abrupt changes before relying on it. See the FFmpeg documentation for option behavior; option placement matters because input options apply to the input that follows.

Keep the stream observable and recoverable
A loop keeps media repeating only while the FFmpeg process is alive. It does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore an internet connection, prevent Windows from sleeping or restarting for updates, or confirm that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio.
- Set Windows power behavior so the PC does not sleep during the broadcast, and plan for updates and restarts rather than assuming they will not occur.
- Use wired networking where practical and verify that the upstream connection remains stable under sustained load.
- Keep the Live Control Room and the public or unlisted watch page available for checks. Confirm ingest health, sound, picture, and playback; YouTube recommends continuous monitoring.
- Consider a process supervisor or scheduled restart strategy only after testing it on your specific Windows installation. No single watchdog configuration is guaranteed here.
- Test recovery from a stopped FFmpeg process and a brief network interruption before depending on the setup. A looping command alone is not a 24/7 uptime guarantee.
Plan around archives, rights, and monetization
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That documented condition does not guarantee a complete archive of one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast, nor does it establish that longer streams never create an archive. Check the current Studio behavior if a replay matters, and consider whether shorter sessions better fit your archive needs.
