On a Windows 11 ThinkPad, treat public Wi-Fi as untrusted: set its network profile to Public, keep Microsoft Defender Firewall on, install updates before you travel, and connect to your employer’s approved VPN before opening work resources. A hotspot password does not make the network private or prove that its equipment is secure.
Before you travel, update Windows and your ThinkPad
Install available Windows updates and restart the laptop before relying on it away from the office. For wireless drivers, first identify the exact ThinkPad model and wireless adapter, then check that model’s Lenovo support page. Security advisories can apply to particular adapters and specify a minimum fixed driver version; do not install a driver just because it is listed for a different ThinkPad. Lenovo’s Qualcomm WLAN advisory says to use the version listed for the product or a newer one.

Windows 11 is the target for the menu paths below. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 device should not be assumed to receive ordinary free security updates after that date. Check Microsoft’s network settings guidance and your organization’s upgrade policy if the ThinkPad still runs Windows 10.

- Select the network icon in the Windows taskbar to open the available Wi-Fi networks.
- Choose the network name the venue gave you, select Connect, and enter its password if prompted.
- Check the SSID carefully. Do not select a similar-looking network just because it has a stronger signal; confirm the name with venue staff or posted instructions.
Lenovo’s Windows 11 connection guide documents the basic connection sequence. A password controls who can join a hotspot; it does not establish that the access point or other connected devices are trustworthy. Lenovo’s 2017 WPA2 Protocol Vulnerabilities advisory makes the broader point that you cannot assume both the client and access point have current patches. Its WPA2 discussion is historical, not a current model-specific vulnerability notice.

Set the Wi-Fi profile to Public
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
- Select the connected network to open its properties.
- Under Network profile type, select Public network (Recommended).
Windows 11 uses Public by default for first-time connections. In that profile, the PC is less discoverable to other devices and ordinary file and printer sharing is blocked. A Private profile makes a PC discoverable and supports sharing, so reserve it for a network and devices you trust. Microsoft explains these choices in Essential network settings and tasks in Windows.
Keep Microsoft Defender Firewall enabled
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection.
- Check the active network profile and confirm that Microsoft Defender Firewall is on.
The firewall filters network traffic and helps block unauthorized access. If a work application is blocked, ask IT how to allow that application or connection rather than turning off the firewall or switching the hotspot to Private. On an organization-managed ThinkPad, a policy may prevent changing the setting; contact IT instead of trying to bypass the control. See Microsoft’s Firewall and network protection guidance.

Connect to your work VPN before opening work resources
Use the VPN profile or application your employer provides, and complete its required authentication. If you do not have a work VPN profile, ask your company’s IT support or consult its intranet; do not substitute a personally chosen VPN for the company’s access method. Microsoft’s Windows VPN guide describes connecting to a VPN and notes that a VPN can help secure a connection on public networks.
Confirm Windows or the VPN application shows the work VPN connected before opening internal sites, files, or applications. A VPN is one layer, not a replacement for updates, HTTPS, or checking that you reached the intended service. Lenovo likewise recommends VPN use and endpoint verification on unknown Wi-Fi in its WPA2 advisory.

Use secure connections and verify destinations
- For websites, check that the address uses HTTPS and that the browser does not show a certificate or security warning.
- For remote shell access, use a secure protocol such as SSH and verify the host you are connecting to.
- Do not dismiss endpoint, certificate, or authentication warnings just to get a connection working. If an expected work service fails, ask IT to verify the address and provide supported troubleshooting.
These practices align with Lenovo’s advisory, which specifically calls out HTTPS, SSH, VPNs, and endpoint verification for untrusted Wi-Fi.
Optional Lenovo Wi-Fi features
Some ThinkPads offer additional wireless controls through Lenovo software, but availability depends on the model and installed software. Treat these as conveniences rather than prerequisites for the Windows setup above.

- Smart Modes: Lenovo documentation describes an optional VPN auto-prompt when connecting to Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi fencing that can label networks safe or unsafe. These settings and features vary by model. See Introduction to Smart Modes.
Quick check before sensitive work
- The connected SSID matches the one provided by the venue.
- The network profile is Public and the firewall is on.
- The employer-approved VPN shows as connected before you open internal work resources.
- Websites use HTTPS, and you have not ignored a certificate or endpoint warning.
If a business app cannot connect, get an approved exception or troubleshooting steps from IT. Do not weaken the hotspot’s profile or disable the firewall as a workaround.
