To connect Telegram to OpenClaw, create a bot with Telegram’s @BotFather, give OpenClaw the BotFather token, start the OpenClaw gateway, verify the channel, and approve the first direct-message pairing request. Group chats require a second layer of configuration: the group ID must be allowed in OpenClaw and Telegram’s Privacy Mode must permit the messages you expect the bot to see.

What you need before you start
Have these items ready before changing OpenClaw:
- An active Telegram account that can open a conversation with
@BotFather. - An OpenClaw installation with access to its command-line interface.
- A place to run the OpenClaw gateway continuously if the bot must remain available.
- A secure method for storing the BotFather token. The token is the credential that lets OpenClaw operate the Telegram bot; treat it like a password and do not paste it into public issues, chat messages, screenshots, or source-control files.
The setup supports a default Telegram account and named accounts. The default account can obtain its token from the TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN environment variable, while named accounts should use an explicit botToken or tokenFile setting.

- Open Telegram and search for the account whose handle is exactly
@BotFather. - Open the conversation and send
/newbot. - Follow BotFather’s prompts for the bot’s display name and username.
- Copy the token BotFather returns and store it in a protected location. You will provide this value to OpenClaw in the next step.
BotFather also provides a web app documented as an alternative to the Telegram conversation. Regardless of which interface you use, the resulting token is the value OpenClaw needs. If you regenerate the token later, every OpenClaw configuration that used the old value must be updated.
Give OpenClaw the token
There are two supported configuration styles. The CLI is usually the quickest repeatable setup; manual JSON5 editing is useful when you are managing several policies or accounts together.

Option 1: Add the channel with the CLI
Run this command on the machine where OpenClaw is installed:
openclaw channels add --channel telegram --token <bot-token>Replace the value inside the angle brackets with the token copied from BotFather. The command configures the Telegram channel for the account it targets. Keep the token out of shell history where that matters for your environment, and verify the resulting configuration uses the intended account.

For the default account, TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN is an environment fallback. Named accounts should instead define botToken or tokenFile. Telegram does not use openclaw channels login telegram; do not try to complete this setup with that command.
Choose the configuration method

Start the gateway and verify Telegram
OpenClaw needs a running gateway to receive Telegram updates and send replies. Use one of these two operating modes:

After starting the gateway, probe the channel:
openclaw channels status --probeRun the probe after configuration changes so you can distinguish a Telegram credential problem from a gateway that simply is not running. Channel changes normally hot-reload. If you changed an environment variable, restart the gateway service so the process receives the new environment; a hot reload cannot make an already-running process reread an old environment.
Approve the first direct-message pairing
With the gateway running, open the new bot’s Telegram chat and send any message. When dmPolicy is pairing, that first contact creates a pending authorization request rather than granting unrestricted access immediately.

- Send a message to the bot from the Telegram account you want to authorize.
- On the OpenClaw host, list pending Telegram pairing requests:
openclaw pairing list telegram- Copy the code shown for the request and approve it:
openclaw pairing approve telegram <CODE>Pairing codes expire after one hour. If the code is no longer accepted, send a fresh message to create a new request and list the requests again. A successful approval changes the result you get from the bot; it does not replace the BotFather token or the gateway requirement.
You may deliberately choose a different direct-message policy, but do so as an access-control decision. Pairing is the documented first-contact workflow when the policy is set to pairing; changing that policy changes who can initiate a conversation without this approval step.

Group delivery depends on both sides of the integration. OpenClaw needs the group represented in its Telegram configuration, and Telegram must expose the messages to the bot.
Configure the group in OpenClaw
- Add the bot to the Telegram group.
- Obtain the Telegram user ID needed for the people who should be recognized and the group’s chat ID.
- Place the group ID under
channels.telegram.groupsinopenclaw.json, alongside the group policy you want.
Supergroup chat IDs are negative values beginning with -100. Put those IDs in the groups map, not in groupAllowFrom. A wildcard policy such as groups: { "*": { requireMention: true } } applies the stated mention requirement to matching groups; use a specific group entry when one group needs a different rule.

With requireMention: true, expect the bot to respond when it is mentioned rather than to every ordinary group message. This is an OpenClaw policy choice and is separate from Telegram’s own visibility rules.
Check Telegram Privacy Mode
Telegram bots default to Privacy Mode. In that mode, the bot may not receive every message posted in a group, so a configuration that looks correct in OpenClaw can still appear silent.
- In the BotFather conversation, use
/setprivacy. - Choose whether the bot should keep Privacy Mode or receive all group messages.
- If you disable Privacy Mode, remove the bot from each affected group and add it again. The change does not become effective for an existing group membership until that remove-and-add cycle is completed.
Making the bot a group administrator is another documented way to allow it to receive all group messages. Administrator status is a Telegram group permission and should be granted only when it is appropriate for that group.

Use a controlled troubleshooting order
- Confirm the gateway process is running in the mode you intended.
- Run
openclaw channels status --probeto test the configured channel. - If the probe reports a 401, fix the token source before investigating pairing or groups.
- For a direct message, list and approve the pairing request when the policy is
pairing. - For a group, test a message that explicitly mentions the bot, then check Privacy Mode and the configured group ID.
- Only after credentials and policies are correct should you investigate proxy, DNS, IPv6, or other connectivity problems in the logs.
This order prevents a network investigation from obscuring a simple expired pairing code, wrong account token, or group-visibility setting.
Operate a reliable Telegram connection
Choose how the gateway stays online
A managed gateway service is the practical choice when the bot must continue working after you close a terminal. Running openclaw gateway directly is useful for interactive testing because logs remain in the foreground. The choice affects uptime and log access, not the Telegram token or pairing model.
Keep account scope clear
A default-account environment variable is convenient for a single Telegram bot. Named accounts require an explicit botToken or tokenFile, so review which account a channel command or configuration block targets before diagnosing a token error. A valid token for one account will not authenticate a different named account.
Treat pairing and group access as separate controls
Approving a direct-message pairing authorizes that user for the DM policy; it does not automatically make the bot visible in groups. Conversely, adding a group entry and changing Privacy Mode does not bypass a restrictive direct-message policy. Configure each surface intentionally.

OpenClaw’s documented flow can be summarized simply: create the bot in BotFather, give OpenClaw its token, approve the first DM, and add the bot to a group. Each step addresses a different boundary—Telegram credentials, gateway operation, user authorization, or group message visibility—so completing all of them is what turns a created bot into a working OpenClaw channel.
