Most failed joins in 7 Days to Die are caused by a mismatch before they are caused by your router. Confirm that every player and the server show the same game version, use the correct session type, remove incompatible mods or custom worlds, and keep Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) enabled for crossplay. Then test discovery, NAT, firewall and local network issues in that order. The procedure below separates peer-to-peer friend games from dedicated servers so you can fix the fault without repeatedly reinstalling or risking a save.

Start with compatibility, not networking
Write down these details for every participant before changing settings:

- Platform: PC (Steam), PlayStation or Xbox.
- Displayed game version and build number.
- Whether the host is running a peer-to-peer world or a dedicated server.
- Whether crossplay and EAC are enabled.
- Every mod, overhaul, map, or custom world in use.
- The exact error text and the point at which the join fails.
The official EOS and Multiplayer Network Troubleshooting guidance, updated October 1, 2026, states: “Verify the server and all players are on the same Game version.” A hotfix installed on one machine can therefore make a friend invisible even when both players believe they are on the same release. Compare the complete build label in the title screen or launcher, not just a major version number.
Check mods and custom worlds
For the first test, have everyone disable nonessential mods and try a fresh, standard world. A mod can prevent a session from advertising, fail the handshake, or load a world that another client cannot parse. If the unmodified test works, add mods back one at a time on the exact same versions. Keep a backup of the original save before changing its mod set.

Use EAC for cross-platform play
Crossplay requires EAC to be enabled. A player who launches with EAC disabled may still be able to play locally, but the cross-platform session can be rejected or omitted from the browser. Enable EAC for the host, every joining client and, where applicable, the dedicated server before testing again.
Identify the session type
The fix depends on whether your friend is hosting a peer-to-peer game or a dedicated server. These are different connection paths, visibility rules and failure modes.

Fix a peer-to-peer game that does not appear
1. Have the host advertise a simple session
- Close any existing world and return to the multiplayer setup screen.
- Set visibility to Friends Only for a controlled test. If that fails, try Public temporarily to determine whether friend visibility is the problem.
- Use an unmodified, standard world for the first connection attempt.
- Confirm EAC is enabled when any cross-platform player is involved.
- Remain in the world while the other player searches; a peer-to-peer world is not available after the host exits.
2. Search through the peer-to-peer tab
The official EOS troubleshooting instructions recommend the peer-to-peer tab and a SteamID search when joining a friend. Open the multiplayer browser, select the peer-to-peer view, and search for the host’s SteamID or displayed name. Do not rely only on an invite notification: a stale invite can point to a session that has already closed or restarted.
3. Remove filters that hide the session
Too many browser filters can make a healthy session look offline. Clear region, language, map, player-count, password and other restrictive filters, then refresh. Once the game appears, reapply filters one at a time to find the setting that excluded it. If the host changed from Friends Only to Public, refresh the list rather than opening an old result.

4. Test the invite after direct discovery
If the host is visible through SteamID search but an invite fails, accept the join from the browser result first. This distinguishes a discovery or platform-overlay issue from a game-network issue. Restart the platform overlay only after confirming that both players still show the same build and EAC state.
Crossplay on a dedicated server: required settings
Console-compatible crossplay is more restrictive than a PC-only server. In the server configuration, verify each of the following exact values:

Keep all other server options inside the documented crossplay ranges. A value outside those ranges can prevent console clients from joining even when the four headline switches are correct. Restart the server after saving the configuration; changing a file while the process is running may not update the active instance.
Match the server branch and version
The server’s branch must match the clients’ branch and build. A stable client cannot join a server left on an experimental or older branch. For the 3.1.0 stable release, a Fun Pimps staff notice in July–September 2026 instructed dedicated-server users to select Default Public Version. Check that selection in the server’s platform manager, then update the server before asking players to retry.

Check the player limit before changing anything else
If the server is set above eight slots, PC-only players may still connect while console crossplay clients fail. Lower ServerMaxPlayerCount to 8 or less, restart, and test with one PC and one console player. Do not interpret a successful PC-only connection as proof that the crossplay configuration is valid.
Work through local network causes in a controlled order
Once compatibility and server settings are correct, isolate the local connection. Change one variable at a time so you know which step helped.

Connect the host or one client directly to the router with Ethernet, then retry the same session. The official basic network guidance says: “If you are using a wireless connection, try using a wired connection as this is typically more stable.” A Cat6 Ethernet cable is sufficient for this diagnostic; the test is about removing Wi‑Fi interference, not buying a faster internet plan. Ethernet will not fix a version, EAC or server-configuration mismatch, so keep those checks complete.
Update every component in the path
- Install the current game update on every player.
- Update the platform client and operating system.
- Install current network-adapter and graphics drivers on PC.
- Restart the game after updates rather than leaving it suspended.
After updating, compare the displayed build again. An update that completed on one machine but is waiting for a restart on another can recreate the original mismatch.

Power-cycle modem and router
- Exit the game and shut down the affected devices.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait about 60 seconds, reconnect the modem, and allow it to finish synchronizing.
- Reconnect the router, wait for Wi‑Fi or Ethernet service, then restart the gaming device.
- Launch the host first and perform a fresh browser search.
This clears transient routing and session-state problems. It does not change server files or saves.
Flush DNS or test a supported public DNS
On Windows, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run ipconfig /flushdns. Reconnect to the network and try the same peer-to-peer search. If name resolution still appears unreliable, test a reputable public DNS service supported in your region by entering its addresses in the operating system or router network settings. Record the original DNS values so you can restore them if the test makes no difference.
Check NAT status
Look at the platform’s network test for NAT type. An open or moderate NAT is generally more usable for friend sessions than a strict NAT. If only one player has a strict result, test that player on a different network, such as a phone hotspot where permitted, to determine whether the home router or ISP is responsible. A hotspot test is diagnostic; it is not a recommended long-term multiplayer connection.
Allow the game through Windows Firewall
On Windows, open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall. Ensure the game and its platform client are allowed on the network profiles you actually use. If the entries are missing, add the installed executables through the firewall’s Allow another app control, then restart the game. Do not permanently disable the firewall. If a managed or third-party firewall blocks the connection, create a narrow rule for the game rather than turning off all protection.

Repair the PC installation without deleting a save
Verify game files
Use the platform client’s file-verification command for 7 Days to Die. Verification replaces missing or damaged program files while normally leaving worlds and settings intact. Wait for it to finish, reboot the client, and test a new session before restoring mods.
Clean game data only after backing up
If verification does not help, back up local worlds, screenshots and configuration files, then remove or rename the game’s user data so it can regenerate clean files. The exact folders vary by operating system and installation, so use the game’s official support instructions for the current locations. A clean-data test can remove a corrupted configuration or stale cache, but deleting the wrong folder can erase local saves; copy the files to a separate location first.

Handle antivirus exclusions carefully
The official general troubleshooting guidance discusses excluding the Steam folder from antivirus scanning. Treat that as a temporary diagnostic: pause real-time scanning only long enough to test, or add the narrowly scoped exclusion described by the support instructions, then restore normal protection. Never download an unofficial “repair tool” as a substitute for file verification, and do not present third-party PC-cleanup software as an official fix.
Use the current service status before reinstalling
A platform-specific outage can mimic a broken installation. A Fun Pimps staff notice covering the 3.1.0 stable release in July–September 2026 reported Xbox server issues and PlayStation Friends Only/invite problems while the stable build was live on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. During an incident like that, repeated reinstalls cannot repair the service. Check the latest Fun Pimps support notice and the relevant platform status first.
What to do during a suspected incident
- Record the time, platform, build and exact error for each player.
- Try one standard, unmodified world only once to confirm the symptom.
- Avoid deleting saves or changing several server settings while the service is degraded.
- Retry after an official status update, then resume the diagnostic order if the problem remains.
Symptom-based decision paths
Your friend cannot see the host at all
- Compare builds and branches.
- Have the host use Friends Only, then Public, with all browser filters cleared.
- Search the peer-to-peer tab by SteamID or name.
- Confirm the host is still inside the world.
- Test Ethernet, router restart and firewall allowance.
The session appears, but joining fails immediately
- Disable mods and custom worlds for a single test.
- Confirm EAC is enabled for every crossplay participant.
- Check NAT status and firewall rules.
- Verify files on PC and retry after a full game restart.
PC players can join, but console players cannot
- Set the dedicated server branch to Default Public Version when applicable.
- Confirm
ServerAllowCrossplay=True,EACEnabled=TrueandIgnoreEOSSanctions=False. - Set
ServerMaxPlayerCountto 8 or lower. - Remove unsupported mods and keep the remaining options within the documented crossplay ranges.
- Restart the server and test one console client before adding more players.
Only one player is affected
When everyone else can join, compare the affected device’s build, EAC state, NAT result, firewall profile and local mods with a working player. Move that player to Ethernet or a different network for one test. This narrows the fault to the device or home network without changing a healthy server.

Choose based on how you play rather than treating one as universally better.

A repeatable checklist for future sessions
- Confirm platform, game version and branch for every player.
- Use matching, supported mods—or none for the first test.
- Confirm EAC when crossplay is involved.
- Identify peer-to-peer versus dedicated hosting.
- For peer-to-peer, start Friends Only, search the peer-to-peer tab by SteamID, and clear filters.
- For dedicated crossplay, verify the four required settings, the eight-player maximum and Default Public Version where applicable.
- Test one player on Ethernet, then restart the modem and router.
- Update the game, platform, operating system and drivers; check NAT and firewall access.
- On PC, verify files, back up saves before cleaning data, and use only narrowly scoped antivirus testing.
- Check current Fun Pimps and platform notices before reinstalling or altering a working save.
No independent source establishes a minimum bandwidth figure or a guaranteed success rate for these fixes. The practical goal is to identify which layer fails—compatibility, discovery, server configuration, local network or a live platform incident—so you change only the setting that can plausibly resolve it.
