What you need before setup
- The Sonos app on an iOS or Android device.
- The included HDMI cable.
- A TV HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. Port labels and settings vary by TV, so consult its manual if you cannot identify the port or audio options.

Set up Arc Ultra and connect it to the TV
- Place Arc Ultra where you intend to use it and connect it to power. Keep the included HDMI cable nearby.
- Open the Sonos app and add the speaker. For a new system, choose Speaker or component during setup, sign in or create an account, select Add when Arc Ultra appears, and follow the prompts. For an existing system, go to Settings > Add Speaker or Component.
- When prompted, connect the HDMI cable between Arc Ultra and the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. Follow the app’s directions; check the TV manual if you cannot locate the correct port.
- Finish the remaining prompts in the app, then play TV audio to check the connection.
If you plan to add a Sub or rear surrounds, finish Arc Ultra setup first and then add them in the Sonos app. Check Sonos’s surround-sound compatibility guidance for supported products.
Which TV connection should you use?
| Connection | Audio and Atmos | TV controls | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC | Supports TV audio and can carry many Dolby Digital Plus Atmos streams. It does not support lossless Dolby Atmos over Dolby TrueHD. | Supports HDMI-CEC functions; Sonos says a TV remote works automatically with HDMI ARC. | Use it if the TV has an ARC port and you do not need lossless TrueHD Atmos. |
| HDMI eARC | Supports TV audio and is required for lossless Dolby Atmos using Dolby TrueHD. Some devices, including Apple TV, pass Atmos using Dolby MAT. | Supports HDMI-CEC functions when enabled on the TV. | Use it if available, especially when your source sends lossless TrueHD Atmos. |
| Optical audio adapter | Sonos describes optical as a fallback for home-theater products when a TV lacks HDMI ARC, but it does not provide Atmos. Sonos’s general guidance does not establish whether an optical adapter is included with Arc Ultra. | Does not provide HDMI-CEC or voice control for TV power. Remote setup in the Sonos app is needed for an optical-connected system. | Consider it only when the TV lacks ARC/eARC and you accept those limitations. Confirm adapter compatibility before relying on this option. |

How to check whether Dolby Atmos is playing
An Atmos-capable service or device does not guarantee that every title will arrive as Atmos. Availability depends on the TV, source device, title, and streaming plan. When Arc Ultra receives Atmos, Sonos says the app shows an Atmos badge in Now Playing. You can also check the received TV audio format in the app’s Settings.
If Atmos is not shown, verify that Arc Ultra is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port, then check that the specific title and playback device are sending Atmos. For lossless Dolby TrueHD Atmos, the TV connection must be eARC; Dolby Digital Plus Atmos can often travel over ARC.

Set up TV remote and voice control
A TV remote works automatically with an HDMI ARC connection, according to Sonos. To use voice commands to turn the TV on or off or change its volume, add Sonos Voice Control or Alexa and enable HDMI-CEC on the TV. These TV power commands do not work over optical. TV menu names and locations vary, so use the TV manual for the HDMI-CEC setting. Sonos’s TV remote guidance explains the setup options.

Arc Ultra is connected, but there is no TV sound
- Check that the HDMI cable is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port, not a different HDMI input.
- Consult the TV manual for its audio output and HDMI-CEC options; menu labels differ by manufacturer.
- Check the received TV format in Sonos app Settings to see what signal is reaching Arc Ultra.
