You can run a SHOUTcast station on a Linux VPS by installing SHOUTcast DNAS, opening its TCP port, connecting a source encoder, and testing the stream from outside the VPS network. DNAS serves the audio to listeners; it does not create the audio itself. Your encoder publishes the audio, while DNAS handles listener connections, stream metadata, and optional directory registration.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Understand the three parts of a SHOUTcast station
A self-hosted station has three separate roles:
- SHOUTcast DNAS: the server process running on your VPS. It accepts an encoder connection and distributes the stream to listeners.
- Source or encoder: software that reads audio from a microphone, mixer, playlist, or automation system and publishes it to DNAS using the broadcaster password.
- Listeners: players that connect to the VPS address and streaming port.
Internet broadcasting also requires a reachable network path. The VPS firewall, cloud security group, operating-system firewall, and any router or external firewall between the server and internet must allow the selected TCP port. A DNAS process that works locally but is blocked at the network edge will still appear offline to listeners.

Choose a VPS and prepare the installation
Basic prerequisites
- A Linux VPS with a public IPv4 address or a correctly configured public hostname.
- Administrative access for the initial software installation and firewall changes.
- A Linux-compatible SHOUTcast Server Software package. SHOUTcast describes its server software as available for Linux 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
- Enough CPU, memory, disk space, and network transfer for your audio bitrate and expected listener count.
- A SHOUTcast-compatible source encoder on a separate computer or service.
The vendor’s current SHOUTcast Basic page claims support for up to 12,000 unique listeners and describes a 50% scalability improvement. Treat that as a product claim, not an independent capacity guarantee. Actual capacity depends on audio bitrate, VPS network limits, CPU and memory contention, operating-system tuning, and whether several streams share the machine.
Pick the server role before opening ports
Use a dedicated port for each DNAS instance or stream arrangement. The DNAS documentation lists portbase as 8000 by default (documentation updated 5 October 2017). You can retain 8000 or choose another unused TCP port that fits your firewall and hosting provider’s policy. Record the final port because the encoder and every listener will need it.

A VPS gives you direct control over DNAS files, ports, logs, and upgrades, but you are responsible for patching the operating system, configuring firewalls, monitoring uptime, and maintaining backups. Managed radio hosting removes much of that administration in exchange for less control over the underlying daemon and network configuration.
Download and unpack SHOUTcast DNAS
Create a dedicated directory
Keep the executable, configuration, and logs together in a directory owned by the account that will run the station. For example:
Recommended Free Tools
mkdir -p ~/shoutcast
cd ~/shoutcast
Obtain the Linux DNAS archive from SHOUTcast’s official server-software distribution, then copy it to this directory. The exact archive name and download location can change, so use the current Linux package rather than an old cached build.
Extract the archive and inspect its sample configuration
Use the extraction tool appropriate to the archive you downloaded. Typical examples are:
tar -xf shoutcast-linux-archive.tar.gz
# or, for a ZIP archive:
unzip shoutcast-linux-archive.zip
After extraction, locate sc_serv and the supplied sample configuration (often named sc_serv.conf or similar). Read the sample before editing it; it documents available directives and prevents you from starting with an incomplete configuration. Place the final configuration beside the executable so the startup command is unambiguous.
Make the DNAS executable and run it as a daemon
Fix executable permissions
From the installation directory, grant execute permission:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
chmod a+x sc_serv
If Linux reports Permission denied when you start DNAS, verify that you ran this command on the correct file and that you are executing it from the directory containing sc_serv. Also check that the filesystem is not mounted with an option that forbids execution.

Start with an explicit configuration file
For a quick foreground-style launch through the daemon mode, use:
./sc_serv daemon ./sc_serv.conf
If the configuration file is in the default location expected by your build, the shorter form is also documented:
./sc_serv daemon
A successful daemon start prints a process ID (PID). Save that PID or identify it with your normal process tools so you can monitor and stop the correct instance. To request a clean shutdown, send SIGTERM:
kill -15 <pid>
Use a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account for routine operation where practical. Reserve root access for installation and firewall administration; running a public streaming daemon as root increases the impact of a possible software or configuration mistake.
Configure passwords, ports, and stream settings
Set two different credentials
Open the DNAS configuration in a text editor and set a long, unique value for password. This is the broadcaster/source password used by your encoder. Set a separate, equally strong value for adminpassword, which protects the web administration and directory-registration controls.
The DNAS manual requires adminpassword and password to be different. Do not reuse either value from your VPS login, database, or email account. Store the credentials in a password manager and do not paste them into public support posts or source-control repositories.
After changing either credential, restart DNAS. Existing encoder sessions will need to reconnect with the new broadcaster password.

Choose the listener port
Set portbase to the TCP port you intend to expose. The documented default is 8000. If you change it, use that same value in the encoder and listener URL and open it in every applicable firewall.
Legacy SHOUTcast 1 source behavior can use portbase + 1. For example, with a portbase of 8000, a legacy source may attempt port 8001. The portlegacy setting controls this behavior. Decide whether you need legacy compatibility, then open and test the resulting port rather than assuming only the base port is used.
Use stream paths when hosting more than one stream
DNAS supports listener responses and stream paths. When multiple streams are defined, use the configured streampath in the listener URL so the request reaches the intended stream. Do not guess a path from another station’s setup; copy the value from your own configuration and use it consistently in encoder and player tests.
Open the VPS network path
Allow the selected TCP port
Permit the chosen DNAS port in all layers that can filter traffic:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Add an inbound TCP rule for
portbasein your VPS provider’s security group or network firewall. - Allow the same port in the Linux firewall running on the VPS.
- If a router or separate perimeter firewall performs port mapping, forward the public port to the VPS address.
- If you retain legacy source support, account for the additional
portbase + 1connection where your configuration requires it.
Limit administrative interfaces to trusted addresses when your hosting environment allows it. The listener port must be public, but the admin interface should not be broadly exposed without access controls.
Confirm that DNAS is listening
Start DNAS before testing the network. On the VPS, use your operating system’s socket or process tools to confirm that the expected TCP port is listening and that the process belongs to the intended account. A firewall rule alone does not prove that an application is bound to the port.
Test from a separate network, such as a mobile connection or another internet connection. Testing only from the VPS itself can hide security-group, routing, or public-address problems. If your provider uses port mapping, verify the externally advertised publicport value in the DNAS configuration and test that public port rather than the internal one.

- Port: the configured
portbase, or the legacy port when your source and DNAS settings require it. - Password: the DNAS
passwordvalue. - Stream ID: stream 1 unless you have defined another stream.
For a legacy source targeting stream 2, append :#2 to the password. For example, a broadcaster password of bob becomes:
bob:#2
Stream 1 is the default, so do not add a stream suffix when publishing to stream 1. A source that repeatedly reconnects usually indicates a wrong host, blocked port, mismatched password, or incorrect stream syntax; check those values before changing unrelated encoder settings.
Confirm that audio and metadata are actually published
Start playback in the encoder and watch its connection status. DNAS should show an active source and begin reporting listener and stream information. Send a short test segment first. Confirm that the encoder’s title, artist, or other metadata changes appear in DNAS before you schedule a full broadcast.
Verify listener playback from outside the VPS
Use a player or browser on a different network and open the station’s stream address using the public host, configured port, and (when applicable) streampath. A successful test has three separate results:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The TCP connection reaches the public VPS port.
- The player receives continuous audio rather than a brief connection followed by a timeout.
- Metadata from the encoder appears and updates when the source changes it.
Test with at least one listener while the encoder is connected and another after reconnecting the source. This catches configurations that appear healthy only during the first session. If local playback works but an external listener cannot connect, investigate public routing and firewall rules rather than the audio encoder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Publish the station in the SHOUTcast directory (optional)
Directory listing is separate from making a stream reachable. First connect a valid source and verify that DNAS is serving audio. Then open the DNAS Server Summary through the server-login link or by visiting /admin.cgi on the server. Authenticate as admin with the configured adminpassword.
Best Value
In Server Summary, create an authentication hash (authhash). The authhash is required for YP2 directory registration. Complete the YP2 settings shown by your DNAS build and restart if the interface or configuration requests it. A station that has no active source, uses the broadcaster password for administration, or has not created an authhash will not complete the directory workflow.
Directory visibility can take longer than direct playback and is not a substitute for testing the stream URL. Keep the direct listener address available even if the listing is pending or unavailable.

Operate the VPS safely after launch
Protect administration and credentials
- Keep
adminpasswordprivate and different from the broadcaster password. - Restrict administrative access by firewall or trusted source address where possible.
- Run DNAS under a dedicated unprivileged account rather than root.
- Use secure remote administration for the VPS and remove unused accounts and services.
Monitor process, logs, and capacity
Check that the DNAS process remains present after reboots and that its logs do not show repeated source disconnects, authentication failures, or listener errors. Add a service supervisor or startup unit appropriate to your Linux distribution only after you have confirmed the manual daemon command works. Record the PID, configuration location, and public port so another administrator can recover the station.
Watch network transfer as listeners increase. A simple planning calculation is audio bitrate multiplied by the number of simultaneous listeners, plus protocol overhead. A 128-kbit/s stream sent to 100 concurrent listeners requires roughly 12.8 Mbit/s of payload before overhead; your VPS provider may also impose transfer quotas. This calculation is planning guidance, not a capacity test.
Back up and update deliberately
Back up the DNAS configuration, stream definitions, authhash-related settings, and operational notes. Do not place plaintext passwords in an unprotected backup. Apply operating-system and DNAS updates during a planned maintenance window, keep a copy of the last known-good configuration, and test a restart after every configuration change.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
“Permission denied” when starting DNAS
- Run
chmod a+x sc_servin the installation directory. - Confirm that the command references the extracted executable, not a similarly named file.
- Check filesystem mount options and ownership if execute permission is present but the error remains.
The source cannot connect
- Verify that the DNAS process is running and listening on the expected port.
- Match the encoder password to
password, notadminpassword. - Check whether the source is legacy and therefore needs
portbase + 1. - For stream 2 on a legacy source, use the exact
:#2suffix syntax. - Confirm the VPS security group, Linux firewall, and any port-forwarding rule.
Listeners cannot connect
- Test from outside the VPS network.
- Confirm that the public address and port, not an internal address, are advertised.
- Check firewall and security-group rules for the listener TCP port.
- If port mapping is used, verify the configured
publicport. - When several streams exist, include the correct
streampath.
The station is not listed
- Connect a valid source and confirm direct listener playback first.
- Log in to Server Summary through the server-login link or
/admin.cgi. - Authenticate with
adminandadminpassword. - Create the stream authhash and verify the YP2 directory settings.
Self-hosted VPS versus managed radio hosting
| Decision area | Self-hosted DNAS on a VPS | Managed radio hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Linux administration | You install, update, secure, monitor, and restart the daemon. | The host generally handles server maintenance and routine service operation. |
| Ports and configuration | Direct control of DNAS files, ports, stream paths, and firewall rules. | Configuration and port choices depend on the provider’s interface and policy. |
| Source compatibility | You can troubleshoot the exact DNAS version and legacy-port behavior yourself. | The provider determines supported encoders, versions, and connection options. |
| Directory publication | You create the authhash and configure YP2 through Server Summary. | The provider may automate or constrain directory registration. |
| Monitoring and backups | You must supply process monitoring, logs, backups, and recovery procedures. | Monitoring and backups may be included, but verify retention and recovery terms. |
| Recurring cost | You pay for the VPS and any transfer, storage, or backup services. | You pay a service fee that usually includes operational convenience. |
Choose a VPS when control over ports, configuration, and operating-system access matters and you can maintain a Linux service. Choose managed hosting when avoiding daemon administration and uptime work is worth giving up that control. In either case, verify current pricing, limits, supported source software, backup policy, and directory features before committing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA launch checklist
- Provision a Linux VPS with a public address and administrative access.
- Create a dedicated installation directory and unprivileged service account.
- Download a current Linux DNAS package, extract it, and inspect the sample configuration.
- Run
chmod a+x sc_serv. - Set different strong values for
passwordandadminpassword. - Choose
portbase, account for legacyportbase + 1behavior, and configure anystreampathvalues. - Open the required TCP port in the provider firewall, Linux firewall, and any router or external firewall.
- Start DNAS with
./sc_serv daemon ./sc_serv.confand record the PID. - Enter the VPS host, port, broadcaster password, and stream ID in the encoder.
- Test audio and metadata from a separate network.
- If directory listing is wanted, create an authhash in Server Summary and verify YP2 settings.
- Back up the configuration, monitor logs and process state, and document recovery steps.
A SHOUTcast station is ready when DNAS stays running under a least-privilege account, the encoder authenticates reliably, an outside listener receives audio and metadata, and the firewall exposes only the ports you intentionally selected. Directory registration is an optional final step, not a replacement for a working public stream.
