You can run Squid as a self-hosted proxy for compatible home-network traffic, but compression is not a built-in switch. Squid’s ordinary role is caching repeat web content; actively recompressing response bodies requires a separate, version-sensitive content-adaptation setup. HTTPS traffic normally travels through an encrypted tunnel that Squid cannot inspect, so a basic setup will not compress HTTPS page content. Squid describes itself as a caching proxy, while its GZip documentation points to a third-party adapter rather than native runtime compression.
What a home proxy can—and cannot—do
A forward proxy sits between a client and the web. When a browser or device is configured to use it, the proxy can handle eligible requests and may reuse cached objects requested again. That is different from compressing every response as it passes through.

Caching is not recompression
Squid’s core function is caching: it can store eligible content and serve a later request from its cache, potentially avoiding another fetch of the same object. This depends on the content and caching rules; it does not mean Squid shrinks every response. See the Squid project overview.

Squid’s documentation says runtime GZip/DEFLATE compression is not supported natively and describes using a third-party eCAP adapter. The project says that adapter has not been tested by Squid. The available adapter instructions have dated version context, so do not treat them as copy-and-paste instructions for a current release. Confirm compatibility among your Squid version, eCAP libraries, and adapter before building around it. Squid’s GZip feature notes describe this limitation.

An ICAP service is another content-adaptation route, but it means adding a separate service and the communication overhead between it and Squid; it is not a ready-made compression product. The Squid content-adaptation guide outlines the approaches.
Choose an explicit proxy before network-wide interception
For a home setup, start with an explicit forward proxy: configure one browser or device to send requests to the proxy host and port. This is simpler to troubleshoot than redirecting everyone’s traffic at the router, and it lets you test with one client before changing the rest of the network.
Keep the listener limited to your LAN
Run Squid on a host reachable from the home network. Configure its listening address and firewall so only intended LAN clients can reach it; do not expose an unauthenticated proxy to the public internet. Squid’s http_port directive controls the proxy listener, but the exact configuration should be checked against the documentation for the Squid release you install. The project’s documentation index links to release-specific references.
No minimum host specification or recommended device is established here. Using compatible hardware you already have is the conservative starting point; confirm that it can run the selected Squid release and any adaptation components.

Configure one test client manually

Install Squid on a LAN host and configure its listener for the intended local interface and port. Apply a firewall rule that admits only your intended home-network clients.

On one test browser or device, open its network or proxy settings and enter the proxy host address and port manually. Exact labels vary by operating system and browser.

Request a few ordinary pages and check that the client can browse through the proxy. Review Squid’s logs if requests fail, then correct the listener, firewall, or client settings before adding other devices.

Squid also documents Proxy Auto-Configuration (PAC) files and automatic discovery. WPAD adds implementation complexity, so it is better considered after manual proxying works. See Squid’s browser-configuration guide.

Use interception only if you need its extra complexity
Transparent interception redirects traffic at the network level rather than requiring each client to name the proxy. It requires suitable router or Layer 3 switch support and traffic-redirection rules; Squid describes the procedure as non-trivial. It is a separate network design, not a shortcut for setting up the explicit proxy above. Squid’s interception guide explains the requirements.
Understand the HTTPS limit before adding compression
With normal HTTPS proxying, the client uses the HTTP CONNECT method to establish a tunnel. Squid forwards the tunnel’s packets without interpreting the encrypted page content, so it cannot recompress that content. This is why an explicit proxy does not automatically compress the HTTPS websites most people browse. Squid explains CONNECT in its HTTPS feature documentation.
Squid can be configured to decrypt HTTPS traffic, but that makes it a man-in-the-middle from a network-security perspective and changes the trust and privacy model for every affected client. Do not enable TLS interception merely to pursue compression. It requires a clear, consent-based, legally appropriate reason and careful certificate and client management; for a typical home proxy, leave HTTPS unintercepted.

If you specifically need response-body compression for traffic the proxy can process, treat the eCAP route as an advanced integration. The documented approach involves compatible eCAP components and adapter configuration, including which MIME types and object sizes are eligible. Because the available instructions are version-sensitive and the project does not test the adapter, first verify that the adapter supports your chosen Squid and eCAP versions. Do not assume an old build recipe or configuration will work unchanged.

Check that the adapter and its dependencies build and run with the exact Squid release in use.

Limit adaptation to content types and object sizes you intend to handle; indiscriminate processing can add work without reducing transferred bytes.

Keep a way to disable the adaptation layer and return to ordinary proxying if requests fail or pages render incorrectly.

Compression may save little or nothing when the response is already compressed, when the proxy cannot inspect it, or when adaptation overhead outweighs the reduction. The available project documentation does not establish a measured bandwidth saving for a home network.

Measure your own result instead of assuming a saving
Test only after the explicit proxy works reliably. Choose a known text response that the adaptation layer is configured to process, then compare behavior with adaptation disabled and enabled.

Record the response headers and transferred byte count for the test request with adaptation disabled.

Enable the adapter for that response, repeat the request under comparable conditions, and record the same headers and byte count.

Check the proxy logs for evidence that adaptation ran, and verify the page or resource still renders correctly in the client.

Repeat with the sites and devices you actually use. Treat the difference as a result for those requests and conditions, not a general expected gain for all home traffic.
