To set up a racing wheel for Steam games, connect and configure it according to the wheel maker’s instructions, then map steering, pedals and buttons in the game’s own control settings. Steam is where you launch the game; Steam Input is not a universal racing-wheel remapper, and a game’s availability on Steam does not guarantee support for your particular wheel.
Before you connect the wheel
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact wheel model and PC operating system. Confirm how the wheel connects by USB, whether it needs a separate power supply, and where the pedals plug in. Also check that the specific game supports that wheel or at least supports racing-wheel input on your platform.

Some wheels need manufacturer software or drivers for PC setup and recognition. For example, Logitech specifies G HUB for the G923 PC setup; that is a Logitech-specific requirement, not a universal rule for every wheel. Logitech’s G923 specifications list its supported Windows versions and connection requirements on the G923 specifications page.

Connect and check the wheel
- Connect the pedals to the wheel if the maker’s instructions specify that arrangement.
- Connect the wheel’s power supply if required, then connect its USB cable to the PC.
- Install or open the maker’s software when required, and check whether it recognizes the wheel and its controls.
- Let startup calibration finish if the wheel performs it. Logitech says the G923 turns fully to each side and returns to center after connection.
For G923-specific connection and pedal checks, Logitech’s instructions cover the power, pedal and USB connections, G HUB recognition, calibration, and in-game pedal mapping: Pedals on the G923 racing wheel do not respond. Do not assume that another wheel calibrates in the same way.

Map steering, pedals and buttons in the game
Launch the game from Steam, then open that game’s control, input or wheel settings. If the game provides a wheel or racing-wheel device option, select it. Assign each control individually rather than assuming the game has chosen the right axis automatically.
- Choose the steering input and turn the wheel through its range.
- Assign throttle and press the accelerator; check that the game’s input indicator moves in the expected direction.
- Assign brake and clutch if present, and test each pedal separately.
- Bind the buttons you plan to use, such as shifting, handbrake or menu controls.
- Apply or save the configuration, then verify each input again before driving.
When a wheel is detected but a pedal or button does not respond, inspect that control’s assignment in the game first. Logitech likewise directs G923 users to map pedals in the game’s options.

Why Steam Input is usually not the wheel setup step
Steam Input supports controllers and offers different ways to translate controller input, but that should not be confused with general-purpose racing-wheel remapping. Valve’s Steamworks developer guidance says that games with flight-stick or racing-wheel support should disable Generic/DirectInput remapping because Steam does not support remapping those devices. That is guidance about Steam Input remapping; it does not mean a wheel can never be used with a Steam game. In practice, check the game’s native wheel support and configure the wheel in its own input settings.
Valve describes Steam Input’s modes and configurator in its Steam Input general concepts documentation. Its Steam Input Gamepad Emulation best practices page contains the DirectInput caveat for developers.

Adjust steering rotation and force feedback
Steering rotation and force-feedback strength are not one-size-fits-all settings. They can depend on both the wheel model and the game. Start with guidance for the exact wheel and title, then adjust to preference while checking that steering behaves predictably and force feedback is comfortable. Logitech’s Pro Wheel recommendations, for example, describe title-specific compatibility modes, force-feedback filters and steering-angle settings; they should not be copied as universal settings for other models. See Logitech’s in-game settings for Pro Wheels.

- The game does not see the wheel: check the required power supply, USB connection and pedal connection; then confirm that any required manufacturer software or driver is installed and recognizes the device.
- The wheel appears, but a pedal or button does not: revisit that control’s assignment in the game and test the input in the manufacturer’s utility if available.
- A pedal responds in the wrong direction: check the game’s axis-inversion option. Logitech notes that some games may invert pedal controls.
- The wheel’s controls are visible in maker software but not in the game: verify the game’s wheel support and input settings rather than assuming a Steam controller profile will remap it.
For Logitech G923, G29 and G920 connection issues, Logitech documents checks using G HUB and Windows’ controller interface on its connection troubleshooting page. Its advanced registry material is not a routine first step; begin with power, cables, software recognition and in-game mapping.
