The steps below apply to Kindle e-readers. Menu names can vary by model and software version, so confirm your Kindle model before changing router settings or following a model-specific path.

First, identify what is failing
Check the Wi-Fi status on the Kindle, then match what you see to the right symptom:
- It cannot join Wi-Fi: focus on the Kindle’s wireless settings, signal, router compatibility, and network equipment.
- It is online but won’t sync: confirm Sync is enabled and run a manual sync.
- It syncs, but one book is missing: check library filters, purchase status, and delivery to the intended device.
Kindle sync requires an internet connection. Amazon says Sync is enabled by default and saves reading position, notes, and highlights to its servers so they can sync with Kindle apps and devices linked to the account. Amazon’s sync settings guidance explains the setting.

Fix a Kindle that cannot connect to Wi-Fi
Check the basics before changing settings
- Turn off Airplane Mode and make sure Wi-Fi is on. The location of these controls varies by Kindle model and software.
- Select the correct network name and re-enter its password carefully.
- Check whether another phone, computer, or tablet can connect to that same network. If several devices cannot connect, the problem may be the internet connection or router; contact your internet service provider if needed.
- Move the Kindle closer to the router and away from likely sources of wireless interference. If many devices are using the network, disconnect some temporarily to free bandwidth.
For a public Wi-Fi hotspot, a sign-in or welcome page may be required. If it does not appear automatically, Amazon suggests opening a simple website in the Kindle’s browser to prompt the page. See Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.
Check whether the network matches your Kindle
Wi-Fi support depends on the Kindle’s release year. Amazon’s current guidance says Kindle e-readers do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi; devices released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi or WPA3 encryption. Identify the specific Kindle before changing a router’s band or security settings, particularly on a network shared with other devices.

Amazon also notes that using the same network name, security type, and password across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and mesh or extender networks supports roaming. That may help devices move between network points, but it is not a universal fix and does not override a Kindle’s band or security limitations. Check Amazon’s compatibility and connection guidance before making router changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRestart the Kindle and network equipment
- Restart the Kindle. Amazon’s dedicated restart instructions say to keep holding the power button for 40 seconds after the power dialog appears or the screen goes blank; release it and let the device reboot. See Amazon’s Kindle restart instructions.
- Restart the modem and router using their normal power or restart procedure.
- Wait two minutes, then try connecting the Kindle again.
Use a hotspot to tell whether the Kindle or home network is at fault
Temporarily connect the Kindle to a smartphone’s personal hotspot. If it joins the hotspot, the Kindle’s Wi-Fi is working and the issue is likely with the other network or its compatibility settings. If it cannot join either network, continue with the Kindle’s software and settings checks or contact Amazon support.

Compare the software installed on your Kindle with Amazon’s current update information for your model, then follow its update instructions if an update is available. Amazon’s Wi-Fi help page links to its software update guidance: Resolve Wi-Fi connection issues.

If the Kindle is online but will not sync
Confirm Sync is enabled, then run it manually
Check the Kindle’s Sync setting and turn it on if it was disabled. Then choose Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items, depending on the model and software. The setting may also be managed through the Amazon account. Amazon says turning Sync off makes some features unavailable; notes, highlights, or bookmarks created while it is off may be lost when Sync is turned back on. Read Amazon’s sync settings guidance before changing it.
Check the account and registration if sync still fails
If the Kindle is connected but cannot register or sync, check that its clock is correct, its software is current, Wi-Fi is working, and the Amazon login details are up to date. Restart the Kindle. If setup is using Wi-Fi saved through a phone, check whether the saved network password has changed. Amazon’s Kindle registration help covers registration problems.

If a Kindle book or other item is missing
Remove Library filters and check delivery
- Open the Library and remove filters that might hide the item.
- In Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices, check whether the item is available and deliver it to the Kindle you are using.
- Return to the Kindle and choose Sync and Check for Items or the equivalent sync option.
If the missing item is a purchase, check Amazon’s Digital Orders for its status. An incomplete digital order may need a payment retry or an updated payment method. Amazon’s content-not-appearing troubleshooting page explains how to check library delivery and purchase status.
Use deregistration or factory reset only after simpler checks
Deregistering is disruptive: it temporarily removes access to the Amazon account, purchased content, and services on that device until it is registered again. Do not use it as an early Wi-Fi fix. If you are considering it, first review Amazon’s deregistration guidance and make sure you can register the Kindle again.
Amazon describes a factory reset as a later troubleshooting step when its Wi-Fi checks have failed. Try the connectivity, restart, compatibility, and software steps first, and consult Amazon’s instructions for your particular model before resetting. Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi help includes its troubleshooting sequence.
