Then choose age, communication, privacy, playtime and spending limits; lock the console against guest or new-user bypasses; and verify the child is signed in before the first game. The process takes place mainly under Settings > Family and Parental Controls.
Start with the right account structure
The most important setup decision is to give the child a separate PlayStation account rather than letting them play through the adult’s profile. The child account is where parental controls are attached, so restrictions can follow that child when the account is used on another compatible device. Each adult and child should have a separate account, as Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 Quick Start Guide puts it.

An adult account must act as the family manager before a child family member can be added. The family manager controls the settings described below and can review requests for exceptions. If the child already has a PlayStation family account from a PS4, the existing family and parental-control settings carry over; review them anyway because the child’s age, games and online habits may have changed.

- Select Create an Account and follow the prompts for the child.
- When prompted, enter the child’s real date of birth and other account details. Age-based controls depend on this information; do not substitute the adult’s birthday to make the account easier to create.
- Complete the email-verification step for the child account. A child who has not finished verification may not receive the expected account experience.
- When the setup asks for family or parental controls, review each category instead of accepting every default without reading it.
Sony’s Quick Start Guide says that you can create a child account and set parental controls at the same time. If the child account was created earlier, open the family-management screen and select that child to review the same controls.
Choose controls in Family Management
On PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, authenticate as the adult when requested, and select the child. PlayStation provides preset restriction levels as well as individual settings. A preset is a useful starting point, but it does not replace checking a particular game, chat feature or user-created item yourself.
Regional rating labels and account capabilities can differ by country. Use the labels shown on your console and local ratings information rather than assuming that a rating from another region means the same thing.

Game and content access
Set the child’s permitted age level for games and other content. This restricts access according to the rating information available for the child’s region. Before approving a game, consider more than the number on the rating label: read what the rating describes, check whether the game includes online interaction or user-created content, and decide whether its themes suit this particular child.
Ratings are a screening tool, not a complete judgment about maturity. A game within the selected age level may still be unsuitable for a child’s sensitivities, attention span or ability to handle competitive play. Conversely, an older child may need a less restrictive setting for a particular title that you have reviewed personally. Make those decisions in the child’s profile instead of weakening controls on the adult account.

Communication with other players
Decide whether the child may communicate with other players and whether they may view content created by other players. Treat voice chat, text chat, invitations and shared media as separate questions when the menu gives you separate choices. A child who is allowed to play an online game does not necessarily need unrestricted communication.
PlayStation supports requests for exceptions to in-game communication restrictions. Explain to the child that an exception is a request, not permission granted automatically. The family manager or guardian can review the request and approve or refuse it after considering the game, the people involved and the child’s readiness.
Privacy settings
Review who can interact with the child, find the account, send invitations or view activity. The safest choice for a first session is the most limited option that still lets the child use the game as intended. You can loosen one setting later when you understand how the child uses the console; it is harder to reconstruct what happened after opening every social feature from the start.
Ask the child to tell you when an unfamiliar player sends a message, invitation or request. Technical restrictions reduce exposure, but a simple reporting rule gives the child a way to handle something that slips through.
Playtime controls
Use the playtime controls to define when the child may play and how long a session may last. Set times that fit the child’s school, sleep and family schedule rather than choosing a limit solely because it is available in the menu. If the console offers warnings before the end of a session, leave enough time for the child to save progress and leave a game without feeling forced to quit mid-action.

Explain the schedule before the first session. A child who knows when a session ends can plan a stopping point; a surprise cutoff is more likely to create an argument. Revisit the schedule when school hours, holidays or the child’s independence change.

Set the spending limit before allowing any purchases. PlayStation says a child account’s monthly spending limit defaults to zero. Purchases made from a child account draw from the family manager’s wallet, so a child does not get an independent source of funds simply because the account can see a store.
If you intend to permit purchases, raise the limit only after deciding what the child may buy and how you will approve it. Tell the child that the limit is shared with the family manager’s wallet and is not permission to buy anything without asking. If no purchases are intended, leave the limit at zero and handle exceptional purchases yourself from the adult account.
Do not treat a spending limit as a substitute for supervision. The limit controls the amount available to the child account; it does not tell you whether a particular add-on, virtual item or subscription is worthwhile.
Lock the console against an easy profile switch
Account controls help only when the child is using the controlled account. Add a console-level restriction passcode known only to the adult. Keep it different from a passcode the child already knows, and do not write it next to the console or controller.

In the console’s family and parental-control area, review the options for new-user creation and guest login. Disabling those routes reduces the chance that a child can switch to a newly created or guest profile without the child restrictions. The exact labels can vary with system software and region, so read each confirmation screen before saving.
This protection is about preventing a casual bypass, not making the PS5 an impenetrable security device. An adult who knows the restriction passcode can still change the settings. Store the account-recovery details securely and update the adult account if its email address or authentication method changes.
Verify that the restrictions actually apply
Before handing over the controller, perform a short check using the child’s profile. You are checking the account state as well as the menu values.
- Confirm that the child account completed email verification.
- Use Switch User to sign in to the child’s profile, not the adult profile.
- Check that the child can see only the games and features you intended to allow.
- Confirm the spending limit still shows the value you selected and that the adult wallet remains under the family manager’s control.
- Test the communication and privacy choices with a game or feature you recognize.
- Sign out of the child account and sign back in if you changed a setting while a game was open.
Parental controls are linked to the account across devices. PlayStation notes that when a control changes during a game session, the child may need to sign out and back in before the change takes effect. If a restriction appears ineffective, first verify the signed-in profile, then refresh the session; do not immediately loosen the setting or create another account.

Give a less experienced player a short orientation
A technically correct restriction setup can still produce a frustrating first session if the player does not know how to navigate the console. Spend a few minutes demonstrating the controls before starting a game:

- Tell the child exactly how to ask for help: for example, call an adult before responding to an unfamiliar message or approving a purchase.
This is practical coaching rather than a claim about a tested usability procedure. Adapt the explanation to the player’s reading ability, motor skills and familiarity with other controllers. Let the child try each action once while you are present, then let them start a simple game.

The same PS5 can need different settings for different children. Use the following decision points rather than choosing a control level by age alone.
| Situation | Setup emphasis | What to review first |
|---|---|---|
| Young child playing offline | Keep the child profile separate and limit content to titles you have checked. | Game/content age access, playtime and console restrictions. |
| Child beginning online play | Start with communication and privacy at their most restrictive useful settings. | Who can contact the child, what user-created content is visible, and how exception requests work. |
| Child who wants downloadable content | Decide in advance whether any spending is allowed. | Monthly spending limit, family-manager wallet and the rule for asking before a purchase. |
| Older or more independent player | Customize individual controls instead of removing every restriction at once. | Which specific communication, privacy or content setting needs more access and why. |
| Shared household console | Protect the child profile from being bypassed by another login path. | New-user creation, guest login and the adult-only console restriction passcode. |
These are starting strategies, not universal age prescriptions. Recheck the game’s own online features and your family’s expectations before changing a setting.
Use a simple first-session checklist
- Adult account: The family manager can sign in and recover the account.
- Child account: It is separate from every adult account, uses the child’s correct birth date and has completed email verification.
- Content: Game and content access matches the child’s age and your review of the specific title.
- Communication: Chat, messages, invitations and user-created content are set deliberately.
- Playtime: The schedule and session length have been explained to the child.
- Spending: The limit is zero unless you have intentionally approved a different amount; the child knows purchases use the family manager’s wallet.
- Console: An adult-only restriction passcode is set, and guest or new-user routes are disabled where appropriate.
- Session: The child is signed in to the controlled profile, and you have refreshed the session after changing settings.
- Orientation: The child knows how to use the PS button, return to the game, stop at the agreed time and ask for help.
Revisit the settings instead of abandoning them
Parental controls work best as a continuing conversation. Review them when the child starts a new game, asks for online chat, receives an exception request or begins using the console more independently. A setting that was appropriate for a first session may be unnecessarily restrictive later, while a newly added game may include features you did not previously consider.
When you make a change, tell the child what changed and why. Keep the adult account separate, preserve the console restriction passcode, and confirm the child is signed in to the intended profile after every major adjustment. If a control still does not behave as expected, verify the account and sign-in state first and have the child sign out and back in before troubleshooting further.
What this setup does—and does not—cover
This process establishes the account and family controls that govern access, communication, privacy, playtime and spending. It does not replace your judgment about a game’s themes or the people a child meets online. It also does not provide a detailed model-independent walkthrough for HDMI, network configuration, controller pairing or system updates; for those first-run tasks, follow the PS5’s on-screen prompts and the manual for your specific model.
Once the child has a separate account, the controls are set, bypass routes are reduced and the first session has been explained, the PS5 is ready to use in a way that can be adjusted as the player gains experience.
