For ordinary dust on a foldable phone hinge, use only the model-specific care instructions from the manufacturer. Samsung says to wipe a dusty or dirty Galaxy foldable hinge gently with a soft, dry cloth. Google permits a soft, lint-free cloth for exterior Pixel cleaning, but says not to spray cleaners or compressed air at the phone. Do not push a pick, brush, paper, swab, or any other object into the hinge, and do not pour or spray liquid into it.
If particles will not lift with a gentle surface wipe, or the hinge feels stiff, gritty, misaligned, or obstructed, stop. A hinge that may contain embedded debris or mechanical damage needs manufacturer support or authorized service, not progressively more force.

What you need before touching the hinge
Foldable hinges are exposed moving mechanisms beside flexible displays. Sand, dirt and other fine particles can damage the hinge or display when the phone closes. Foldable phones also differ by model: an ingress-protection rating, where present, does not make a phone dust-proof or authorize rinsing the hinge.

- Use a clean, soft, lint-free, dry cloth. A microfiber cloth intended for phone or eyeglass surfaces is suitable for wiping the exterior only.
- Work in a clean, dry place with good light so you can see whether material is on the surface or disappearing into the hinge gap.
- Remove jewelry or anything that could scratch the cover or display while you handle the phone.
- Keep a second clean section of the cloth available. Reusing a visibly gritty section can drag particles across the frame.
Do not begin with water, alcohol, household cleaner, compressed air, a vacuum nozzle, brush, toothpick, SIM tool, paper corner, cotton swab, or adhesive putty. The cited manufacturer guidance does not authorize inserting any of these into a foldable hinge.

How to tell surface dust from a deeper problem
Loose surface dust usually sits on the outside of the hinge cover or frame and transfers to a dry cloth with a light pass. It should not require pressure, repeated opening and closing, or contact with the seam. A mark that remains exactly in place may be a scratch, adhesive residue, a lifted protective layer, or a particle caught below the surface rather than ordinary dust.
Before wiping, compare both sides of the hinge in good light. Look for a visible object in the gap, a dent, a new gap between panels, a lifted display edge, or a change in the way the phone opens. Do not bend the phone farther than its normal range to improve your view. If the material seems to disappear under an edge or the movement feels different, treat it as an internal or mechanical issue.

- Wipe the accessible surface gently. Use a dry, soft cloth with light strokes over the exterior hinge and adjacent frame. Do not press the cloth edge into the hinge seam. - Check the cloth, not the hinge. If dust transfers to the cloth and the hinge moves normally, fold a clean section of the cloth and make another light pass. Do not scrub harder when a mark remains; it may be a scratch, adhesive, or embedded particle rather than removable dust.
- Stop when a gentle wipe stops working. Never escalate to a tool or liquid. Persistent debris, grinding, resistance, clicking, uneven alignment, or a new display crease should be handled by the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
- Reinspect before closing the phone. Google specifically warns that objects or fine particles such as sand or dirt should not be present on the foldable display or in the display hinge when closing it. If you cannot tell whether a particle remains, leave the phone open and seek support rather than trapping it between the panels.
Model-specific guidance and water ratings
Ingress ratings describe controlled laboratory exposure, not a cleaning method. Water resistance can decline with wear, impact, repairs, disassembly, or ordinary aging. A rated foldable can still be damaged by particles, and no rating makes every opening safe to spray.

Samsung’s Philippines precautions page describes laboratory submersion of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes, while warning that ratings are not permanent, do not make an IP48 phone completely dust-proof, and do not protect against forceful moving water. That regional page does not replace the instructions for your exact model and market.
These figures are easy to misread. IPX8 addresses water exposure under a defined test and the X indicates that no dust-protection level is specified. IP48 combines a limited solid-object protection rating with a water test, but Samsung still says its foldables are not dust resistant. Neither designation tells you that a hinge can be flushed, brushed, or blown clean.
Why compressed air, water and tools are risky
Compressed air
Google’s Pixel cleaning instructions explicitly say to avoid spraying cleaners or compressed air at the phone. A jet can drive particles deeper into a hinge or force pressure into openings. Do not transfer that warning into a recommendation for another foldable; use that model’s own instructions, and in the absence of a specific approval, choose a dry surface wipe rather than an air blast. A can held close to the hinge also makes it difficult to control where loosened grit travels, including onto the inner display.
Water and cleaning liquids
A water rating is a test limit, not an invitation to rinse. Fresh water exposure in a laboratory does not account for grit, soap, salt, chlorine, water pressure, a worn seal, a previous repair, or a drop. Samsung warns against forceful moving water and says ratings can diminish. Google describes the Pixel Fold as not waterproof and warns that resistance may be lost. Keep liquid out of the hinge and all openings.

Do not use a damp cloth as a workaround unless the exact manufacturer instructions expressly permit it for your model and location. The guidance covered here supports a dry cloth for the relevant cleaning task. Applying alcohol, glass cleaner, disinfectant, oil, or lubricant can leave residue and is not a substitute for service.
Picks, brushes, paper and swabs
Neither cited manufacturer source recommends an insertion tool. A hard or fibrous object can scratch the frame, tear a protective layer, deform a seal, push grit farther inward, or snag the foldable display. Even a soft brush is not a safe default when its bristles can enter the mechanism. Wipe only what is plainly accessible from the surface.
Protective film and display edges
Google warns Pixel Fold owners not to pick at the display edges or attempt to remove the protective film. A lifted edge can look like dirt near the hinge, but peeling it back can damage the foldable display. Photograph the area and ask support for the correct remedy instead of trimming or lifting the film. Do not apply tape or adhesive to pull at a suspected particle.

Symptoms that mean you should stop cleaning
- The hinge becomes harder to open, close, or hold at its normal angles.
- You feel grinding, crunching, clicking, catching, or a sudden change in resistance.
- The two halves no longer align, sit flat, or close evenly.

- When the problem began and whether it followed a drop, water exposure, beach or pool use, or a repair.

Do not close the phone while sand, crumbs or visible dust sit on the inner display or along the hinge. Shake debris from a bag or pocket before handling the device, and avoid placing an open foldable on beaches, workshop benches, carpets with loose grit, or other dirty surfaces.
Use a clean case and storage spot

Can I clean dust in the hinge with water?

Can I use a microfiber cloth?

Can I blow into the hinge?
Do not spray compressed air at a Pixel phone, and do not assume a hand blower is safe for another foldable without explicit model instructions. Airflow can move grit deeper rather than remove it.
What if the hinge was exposed to sand?

Does IPX8 or IP48 mean the hinge is dustproof?
