To make a YouTube livestream private, open YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live, choose Webcam or Stream, and set the event’s visibility to Private. You can then invite viewers by email. Choose Unlisted instead only if you are comfortable with anyone who has the link watching and sharing it.
Private vs. unlisted: choose the right audience access
A private livestream is invitation-based: only you and the people you select can watch. Add invitees’ email addresses through YouTube Studio’s private-sharing controls. Private videos are not searchable, are not posted on your channel, and do not support comments. See YouTube’s privacy settings guidance.

An unlisted livestream is easier to distribute, but the link is not an access control. Anyone with the URL can watch and reshare it. Unlisted videos are generally absent from search by default and can be commented on. If you need to limit access to named people, use Private rather than Unlisted.

Check eligibility before setting up
YouTube’s 2026 Help documentation says a streamer must be at least 16, have a verified channel, and have had no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Check the current eligibility details in YouTube Help before scheduling an event.

Choose webcam or encoder
Webcam
Use YouTube’s Webcam option for a straightforward camera-and-microphone stream from a computer. A built-in webcam may be enough; YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started. This route is suitable when you do not need to capture gameplay, share a screen, or mix external audio and video.
Encoder
Use the Stream workflow with broadcasting software or hardware when you need gameplay capture, screen sharing, external audio/video equipment, or more control over production. The encoder sends the video feed to YouTube; you check it in Live Control Room before starting the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Set up a private stream with a webcam
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live.
- Select Webcam.
- Enter the stream details and set visibility to Private. Schedule it for later if needed.
- Select the intended webcam and microphone. Check that the correct devices are active before beginning.
- Click Go live. Monitor the stream while it is running, then select End stream when finished.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. See the Webcam streaming instructions for current interface details.

Set up a private stream with an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab for an immediate stream, or choose Manage → Schedule stream to create a scheduled event.
- Set the event visibility to Private.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room. Refer to encoder setup and stream settings.
- Start sending the feed from the encoder. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then check the picture and sound.
- For a scheduled stream, click Go live when the preview is ready and it is time to begin. At the end, stop the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The archive and stream controls are described in YouTube Help.

Invite viewers and test access
- In YouTube Studio, open the private stream’s sharing controls and enter the email addresses of the intended viewers.
- Tell invitees to open the stream while signed in to the Google account associated with the invited email address. Account and permission edge cases can vary; do not assume access works simply because an invitation was sent.
- Before the event, ask at least one intended viewer to confirm they can open the stream. This is especially important for a consequential meeting or event.
- If you choose Unlisted for easier link sharing, send the URL only to people you intend to reach and account for the fact that recipients can reshare it.
Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor both audio and video before viewers arrive. Avoid displaying personal information in the stream or chat. YouTube’s practical setup advice is in Tips for live streaming.
Common problems and fixes
- Go Live is unavailable: confirm the channel is verified, meets YouTube’s age requirement, has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and—if this is the first stream—allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- An invited viewer cannot watch: verify that the stream is Private, that the viewer’s email address was added correctly, and that the viewer is signed in to the matching account. Test access directly before the event; YouTube’s guidance does not resolve every account or regional permission edge case.
- The encoder feed does not appear: check that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct encoder fields, the encoder is actively sending video, and the preview has had time to load. Reset a compromised key in Live Control Room.
- The preview has no sound or the wrong picture: reselect the intended microphone and camera in Webcam mode, or inspect the encoder’s audio/video inputs, then check the preview again before going live.
- You meant to share a link but chose Private: keep Private if named-person access matters; otherwise change visibility to Unlisted and understand that anyone with the URL can watch and reshare it.
