You can broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream by running an encoder such as FFmpeg on a cloud VPS. YouTube does not turn a normal video upload into a live broadcast: the VPS encoder must send the file to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio, in real time. The cloud control panel provisions and gives you access to the VPS; YouTube Studio creates and manages the live stream.
Before you start: check YouTube eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. The stated minimum age for live streaming is 16. Check your channel’s eligibility before provisioning a server or scheduling an event; see YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Use your cloud provider’s control panel to create and access a Linux VPS. Provider interfaces differ, so there is no universal sequence of panel labels. Choose a location appropriate for your audience and network route, then install FFmpeg using the package manager for the VPS operating system or a trusted current build.
Upload the video to the server and check that the file is readable and includes the intended video and audio tracks. Check available disk space, CPU capacity if you plan to transcode, and—most importantly—sustained outbound network capacity. The required capacity depends on the stream bitrate. The cited YouTube and FFmpeg documentation does not establish a universal minimum VPS size or bandwidth.

Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- For an immediate setup, use the Stream tab. To prepare an event, go to Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Set the title, privacy, and schedule. A scheduled stream can appear as an upcoming event and allow viewers to opt in to notifications.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy its server URL and stream key. Use the credentials for this stream—not a key copied from another broadcast. YouTube’s encoder and scheduling steps are documented in its encoder setup guide and stream settings guidance.
Prefer the RTMPS endpoint displayed in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL. In stream settings, use the lock icon to reveal the secure URL; do not assume an RTMP address is the secure endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or source control. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio’s stream settings.

Choose the encoder output settings
Use settings that match the file, the intended viewing quality, and the VPS’s actual upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). Its examples recommend H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p60. These are recommendations, not guarantees that your VPS can sustain the rate. For other combinations, use the matching resolution, frame-rate, and codec row in YouTube’s full encoder settings table.
- Stream-copy: If the file’s codecs and parameters already suit the stream, copying the media rather than re-encoding can reduce CPU demand. Confirm compatibility before relying on this approach.
- Transcoding: Re-encoding lets you choose output resolution, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval, but requires more CPU capacity. A VPS that cannot encode quickly enough may fall behind or drop frames.
- Transport: Use the exact RTMPS URL shown for this stream when the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. FFmpeg documents the encrypted protocol and its available protocol support at FFmpeg protocols.

Replace myfile with the path to your video and replace the example output with the exact YouTube ingest URL and stream key for your event. Do not publish a real key. The precise output syntax depends on the URL YouTube provides and the protocols supported by your installed FFmpeg build. Check that build’s RTMPS support before using a secure endpoint; not every build necessarily includes it.

The -re option reads the input at real-time speed, which is important when sending a prerecorded file as a live feed. For a single scheduled broadcast, send the file once. A repeating program may need a loop option, but looping is a separate choice rather than a requirement for a one-time stream. FFmpeg’s documented real-time file-to-RTMP pattern is in its protocol documentation.
Preview, start, monitor, and stop the broadcast
- Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive and inspect its feed. For a scheduled event, YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least 2 hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start; see its live-streaming tips.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check stream health, picture, and audio. For a scheduled encoder stream, click Go live when you are ready to begin.
- Monitor the broadcast throughout. Watch for encoder errors, network instability, missing audio, or a frozen picture; a process running on a VPS does not by itself confirm that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
- When finished, end the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and stop the FFmpeg process. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending; see its encoder guide.
Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Having a file available to stream does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its music, video, images, or other material. Resolve permissions before going live and review YouTube’s applicable policies for your channel and content. A prerecorded broadcast is still subject to YouTube’s rules; using an encoder does not bypass them. Monetization is not automatic: live monetization depends on eligibility and access to the relevant YouTube programs.

Troubleshooting common VPS live-stream problems
- YouTube does not show an incoming signal: Confirm the encoder is running, the input path is correct, and the output uses the current stream’s URL and key. Check for typos and verify the selected RTMPS endpoint is supported by the FFmpeg build.
- The key or connection is rejected: Recopy the URL and key from this stream’s Live Control Room settings. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder command.
- Connection health is poor or frames drop: Compare the selected bitrate with measured, sustained outbound capacity—not just a peak speed reading. Lower the output bitrate or resolution if the VPS cannot hold the target rate, and leave network headroom.
- FFmpeg uses too much CPU or falls behind: If the file already matches the desired output parameters, consider stream-copy instead of transcoding. Otherwise, reduce encoding demands or use a VPS with suitable compute capacity.
- Video arrives without audio, or vice versa: Check that the source file contains the expected tracks and that the chosen output settings preserve or encode them. Confirm the result in YouTube’s preview before going live.
- The broadcast ends when your SSH session closes: Run the encoder in a persistent service or terminal-session manager configured for your operating system, and verify that it remains active after disconnecting. A VPS avoids relying on a home computer, but still needs monitoring and a recovery plan.
Reliability and operating costs
A single VPS and encoder are one streaming path, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. YouTube’s operational guidance discusses testing encoder failover, but whether a backup arrangement is available depends on the VPS provider and how you configure it. If you need redundancy, plan and test a separate backup path rather than assuming the cloud panel supplies one.
Budget for the VPS, storage, outbound transfer, and any additional compute needed for transcoding; the exact costs depend on your provider, region, plan, stream duration, and bitrate. The cited sources do not establish a universal VPS price or server specification.
