For a 120-inch diagonal 16:9 picture, plan for an image about 104.6 inches wide and 58.8 inches high. The projector’s lens-to-screen distance depends on its throw ratio and zoom, so use the chart or calculator for your exact model rather than relying on a universal distance. Square the projector to the screen, size the image physically or with optical zoom, then focus; use digital keystone correction only to correct what you cannot fix with placement.
How much space does a 120-inch picture need?
A 120-inch diagonal 16:9 image is approximately 104.6 inches wide by 58.8 inches high (2657 × 1494 mm). Those dimensions describe the projected picture, not necessarily the outside dimensions of a screen frame.

The distance from the projector lens to the screen is model-specific. Throw ratio relates that distance to image width, and projectors with different lenses need different placement distances. Check the official throw-distance table or calculator for your projector and the 120-inch diagonal size. Also check the manual for lens height or offset requirements.

That is an M10-specific figure, not a general rule for portable projectors. The M10 has a fixed optical lens and digital zoom, which is one reason not to assume every model can optically resize an image. Set up the screen and projector in the right order
- Measure the available throw distance. Measure from the planned lens position to the screen surface, then compare it with the exact projector’s official distance guidance for a 120-inch diagonal. Confirm the supported aspect ratio and any lens-height or offset requirement in the manual.
- Prepare the screen. If you are using a portable screen, unfold and stabilize it on a level surface. Check its stated aspect ratio and viewing-area dimensions; a “120-inch” product may use a different aspect ratio from 16:9.
- Place the projector square to the screen. Put it on a stable surface, center the lens horizontally on the screen, and aim it straight at the screen rather than from an angle. Correct physical misalignment before relying on electronic geometry correction.
- Fit the picture to the screen. Move the projector or adjust optical zoom, if the model has it, until the picture fits. Do this before using digital zoom or keystone correction, which can alter the image rather than change the lens’s optical projection.
- Focus the image. Run autofocus if available, then make a manual adjustment if the image remains soft and the projector allows it. Use the built-in test pattern, small text, or fine detail, and inspect the center and corners instead of judging only the middle.
- Correct remaining distortion sparingly. If the image is still trapezoidal after you have squared the setup as well as the room allows, use the smallest keystone or corner adjustment that makes the picture fit. Controls and menu paths vary by projector; follow its manual.
- Reduce ambient light where possible. Dim room lights or block light reaching the screen, especially for a large image. Manufacturer brightness figures are tied to particular models, modes, and environments, not a universal guarantee of a good 120-inch picture.
- Recheck after any move. If you move or rotate the projector, check screen fit and focus again. ViewSonic advises physically testing the intended projection size and distance with the actual projector before permanently installing it.
Why square placement helps sharpness
A projector aimed at the screen from the side or tilted up or down produces a skewed shape. Digital keystone and corner correction can make that shape look rectangular, but the first fix should be better physical alignment. Centering the lens and aiming perpendicular to the screen gives you a clean baseline for focusing and fitting the picture, while minimizing the amount of electronic correction needed.
Correction tools differ by model. ViewSonic documents keystone and focus controls for the M10; BenQ advertises screen-adaptation features for the GV50; and XGIMI provides model-specific focus instructions for the MoGo Pro. Focus across the whole image, not just the center
After the projector is positioned and the image is the right size, use its autofocus routine if it has one. If focus is adjustable by hand, refine it while viewing a test pattern or small text. Check detail near the middle and around the corners; a sharp center alone does not establish that the full picture is in focus.
The steps are model-specific. ViewSonic’s M10 guide describes a test pattern and auto and manual focus options. XGIMI’s MoGo Pro support page gives its own remote-control focus instructions. Use the controls documented for your projector rather than expecting another model’s button sequence to work.

Check brightness and resolution against your room
A projector’s maximum advertised image size is not a promise that the picture will look equally bright or clear at that size in every room. Ambient light matters, and manufacturer brightness figures may be specified in a particular mode or environment. For example, XGIMI recommends a 60–120-inch screen range for its 300-ANSI-lumen MoGo Pro. LG Canada lists 600 ANSI lumens for the CineBeam Q PU600U and says the figure is based on brightest mode and may vary with the environment. These are product-specific manufacturer statements, not a universal brightness threshold for 120 inches.
Resolution claims also need care: check the projector’s native resolution rather than treating input compatibility or a “supports” claim as native resolution. LG lists 4K UHD for the PU600U. That specification alone does not establish how another projector will resolve detail, nor how sharp a specific setup will appear.

Is a portable screen worth using?
A separate screen is optional, but it can provide a flat, defined surface when the available wall is uneven or not suitable for projection. Verify the viewing area and aspect ratio before buying or setting it up: the Kodak portable screen support page lists a 120-inch diagonal model with a 96 × 72-inch size, which is not the same shape as a 120-inch 16:9 image. Its stated specifications include 0.9 gain and a 160-degree viewing angle. The product page also describes a carry bag.

Before fixing a permanent position
- Confirm the exact lens-to-screen distance for your projector and intended diagonal.
- Check that the screen’s viewing area has the intended aspect ratio.
- Test physical alignment, image fit, and focus at the final position.
- Verify which adjustments are optical and which are digital in the projector manual.
- If using a stand or tripod, check that its mounting interface is compatible with the projector and approved by its manual.
Permanent placement is best decided only after the actual projector has been checked at the intended distance and image size. ViewSonic’s installation guidance makes the same practical recommendation in its M10 Full Guide.
