To set up a PlayStation Portal for Remote Play, enable Remote Play on your PS5, sign in to both devices with the same PlayStation account, connect the Portal to Wi-Fi, then select the PS5 tile. The Portal works with PS5 consoles, not PS4. If you want the Portal to wake a PS5 from rest mode, enable two additional network settings on the console.
Before you start: check the console and account
- You need a PS5 connected to the internet. PlayStation Portal Remote Play does not support PS4.
- Use the same PlayStation account on the PS5 and Portal. Remote Play must also be enabled for the PS5 user who will play.
- Update the PS5 to the latest available system software. Keep the Portal updated too; menu names and network flows can change with software updates.
Sony’s PlayStation Portal setup instructions provide the current setup flow.

Enable Remote Play on the PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Select Enable Remote Play.
- Make sure Remote Play is enabled for the PS5 user account you plan to use.
Let the Portal wake the PS5 from rest mode

Connect the Portal to the PS5
- Connect the Portal to a Wi-Fi network and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
- On the Portal’s Remote Play home screen, tap the PS5 tile you have used previously, or select it with the cross button.
- Wait for the connection to start. Before relying on Remote Play away from home, Sony advises confirming that the Portal can connect while you are near the PS5.
Choose a network setup that suits your connection
The Portal connects over Wi-Fi. The PS5 can use either Wi-Fi or Ethernet; a wired PS5 connection is optional, but Sony recommends it. Sony recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal and suggests disabling router band steering if possible. These are recommendations, not guarantees of low latency or uninterrupted play.
| Connection choice | Sony’s guidance |
|---|---|
| PS5 connection | Ethernet is recommended; Wi-Fi is also possible. |
| Portal connection | Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when available. |
| Internet speed | Sony states that 5 Mbps is the minimum for use over broadband Wi-Fi and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. These are published requirements and recommendations, not performance guarantees. |
These figures and network recommendations appear on Sony’s Remote Play product page and Portal connection support page. The cited pages do not state a publication date for the figures.

Use the Portal on public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi may work, but connection quality can be outside your control and availability can vary by network and regional rules. Sony says some public networks that require extra validation are supported on Portal system software 3.0.1 or later. You may need a phone or tablet to complete the network’s sign-in steps, and initial Portal setup must first be completed on home Wi-Fi. Check Sony’s connection guidance for current details.

Troubleshoot a Portal that will not connect
- Confirm the PS5 settings: Make sure Remote Play is enabled and enabled for the correct PS5 user.
- Check the basics: Confirm the PS5 is online and that both devices are signed in to the same PlayStation account.
- If the PS5 is in rest mode: Verify that both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network are on.
- Improve Wi-Fi conditions: Sony recommends connecting the PS5 by Ethernet. If it uses Wi-Fi, move the Portal and PS5 closer to the router and reduce obstacles between them.
- If a menu or public-network flow looks different: Install the latest available Portal system software and consult Sony’s live support instructions, since software versions and supported network flows can change.
