A Steam Deck Verified badge is a useful compatibility screen, not a promise of a particular frame rate, battery life, or image quality. To judge how a game will feel, read its Steam Deck Compatibility details, then compare several recent Steam Deck-specific ProtonDB reports against the settings and performance you consider acceptable.
What Steam Deck Verified does—and does not—tell you
Valve assigns games one of four Steam Deck compatibility categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. Verified means Valve considers the game to work great on Deck out of the box. Playable may require manual adjustment; Unsupported is currently considered nonfunctional on Deck; and Unknown means Valve has not checked the game yet. Valve says its reviews are ongoing, so a rating can change as the game or Deck software changes. Valve’s compatibility program describes the categories and criteria.

For Verified status, Valve checks four areas:
- Input: Full controller support, appropriate controller icons, and an on-screen keyboard that appears automatically when needed.
- Display: Support for the Deck’s default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, suitable default settings, and legible text.
- Seamlessness: No compatibility warnings and, if the game uses a launcher, a launcher that can be navigated with a controller.
- System support: If the game runs through Proton, the game and its middleware—including anti-cheat—must be supported.
These checks emphasize compatibility and ease of use. Valve’s criteria do not provide a per-game benchmark or guarantee a specific frame rate, battery runtime, or visual quality. Whether a game “runs well” depends on the game’s current build and the trade-offs you are willing to make.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Read the current Steam rating and its details. Find the game in your Deck Library or the Steam Store and open its Steam Deck Compatibility details. Valve says details are available for reviewed titles. On Playable or Unsupported games, Steam Support says the page can identify which Verified requirements are not met. See Steam Support’s compatibility information.
- Find the game’s ProtonDB page. Search ProtonDB by the exact game name or its Steam app ID. Valve’s Proton community troubleshooting wiki points users to ProtonDB reports, which are associated with a game’s app ID. Start with reports explicitly marked for Steam Deck when available. ProtonDB describes its coverage as community compatibility reports for Linux and Steam Deck.
- Read individual recent reports, not just the aggregate rating. Check the report date and, when supplied, the Deck model, game version, Proton version, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate cap, and settings changes. A report that lists reproducible conditions is more useful than a rating without context. Reports are user-submitted and may be sparse, contradictory, or out of date.
- Compare the outcomes that matter to you. Look for recurring stutter or crashes, performance in demanding areas, readable text and comfortable controls, graphics compromises, online or anti-cheat behavior, and how much setup is required. Consider battery use only when a report describes it under relevant conditions. These are useful comparison questions, not fields Valve or ProtonDB guarantees every report will contain.
- Recheck after updates. A report from before a major game patch may no longer describe the current experience. Seek newer reports when possible. If you test the game yourself, begin with default settings and note the game version and any changes so you can interpret or compare the result.
How to compare reports fairly
When reports disagree, compare like with like instead of treating one user’s result as a universal benchmark. Use the same questions for each report:
#1 Best Overall
- International (UK) Version
- 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
- SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
- 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
- How recent is it, and which game version does it describe?
- Which Deck model is involved, if stated?
- What frame-rate target is used, and does performance stay stable in demanding scenes?
- What resolution and graphics settings were used?
- Are stutter or crashes reported, and do multiple reports describe the same problem?
- Do controller support or launcher steps add friction?
- Do multiplayer features or anti-cheat work as expected?
- Is battery use reported, and are the conditions comparable to your intended session?
- How much setup or tweaking was needed?
Keep any reported measurements attached to the person’s stated settings, hardware, and game version. A single report can show what happened in one setup; it cannot establish what every Deck owner will experience.
When changing Proton settings is worth trying
If a game has a launch or compatibility problem, Steam Support documents a per-game setting for selecting a Steam Play compatibility tool. On Steam Deck, open the game’s page, select the gear icon, choose Properties, then Compatibility, and enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. The available tools depend on what is installed and offered for that game.

A Verified badge plus several recent Deck reports that agree on acceptable performance at settings you are willing to use is stronger evidence than the badge alone. If reports conflict, give more weight to recent reports for a similar Deck model and game build, and look for repeated explanations or settings associated with the difference. If evidence is limited, treat the result as uncertain—not as proof of smooth performance.
