You can protect your PlayStation Network account with a passkey or with 2-step verification (2SV). Set up either option through PlayStation Account Management, or start setup on a PS5; save a recovery route before you lose access to the phone or device you use to sign in.
Sony describes passkeys as a password replacement using a biometric check or device screen lock, while 2SV adds a verification code sent by text or generated in an authenticator app. Sony’s setup guidance does not establish that one option is universally safer. Choose based on device support, what you can access when signing in, and how you will recover the account if that device is lost.

Choose a passkey or 2-step verification
A passkey is tied to a compatible device or passkey provider. PlayStation Support says passkeys are supported on most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later. For browser sign-in, use a current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge. Android users should check Google Play Services compatibility; Sony advises against using an Android PIN as a passkey. PlayStation Support’s passkey guide describes the setup and compatibility requirements.
With 2SV, you enter a code after your password. PlayStation offers an authenticator app or SMS text message. The right choice depends on whether you can reliably access the chosen device or service and have saved a recovery method. Sony’s instructions explain how to configure each method, but do not publish comparative security outcome figures. PlayStation Support’s 2SV guide covers the available methods.

Set up a passkey
From Account Management
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Security and enable Sign in with Passkey.
- Select Create a Passkey.
- Choose where to create the passkey, then follow the prompts to finish. Sony says it sends an email confirmation after successful creation.
Start on PS5
- On the console, go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
- Scan the displayed QR code with a mobile device.
- Select Create a Passkey on the device and follow the prompts.
The menus may differ slightly by system software or region. If a label is different, look for the current passkey option in the console’s account security settings.
Set up 2-step verification
From Account Management
- Sign in to Account Management and select Security.
- Beside 2-step Verification Status, select Edit.
- Choose Authenticator App or Text Message.
- For SMS, enter your mobile number. For an authenticator app, scan the QR code. If scanning does not work, copy the alphanumeric setup code into the app.
- Enter the verification code you receive or the app generates, then select Activate.
- Save the backup codes shown during setup somewhere you can access without the phone used for 2SV.
From a console
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
Console menu wording can vary with system software version or region. For the current online steps and method details, see PlayStation Support’s 2SV instructions.

Prepare a recovery route before you need it
For 2SV: keep the backup codes
Sony provides ten backup codes when you set up 2SV, and each code works once. Store them securely somewhere separate from the phone or device that normally supplies your verification code. If you have used most of them, Sony says you can get new codes by turning 2SV off and activating it again.
If you cannot receive a code but have a saved backup code, sign in and choose Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code, then enter one unused code. If you have neither backup codes nor access to the phone, Sony directs you to PlayStation Support. Details are in PlayStation’s 2SV troubleshooting guide.

2SV code does not arrive or work
- A 2SV code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If it expires, choose Resend Code.
- For SMS or app-code problems, Sony suggests resending the code, restarting the phone, checking that airplane mode is off, and checking mobile signal.
- If these steps do not resolve the issue, use a backup code if you saved one; otherwise contact PlayStation Support.
Sony says 2SV may be requested after you enable it for the first time, manually sign out, reset your account password, or change your sign-in ID or online ID. See Sony’s 2SV troubleshooting guidance for its recovery steps.

Passkey sign-in fails
On the sign-in screen, choose Can’t Sign In with Passkey and try the email or QR-code sign-in option. Sony also notes that an outdated browser or some Android-to-Windows combinations can cause problems; update the browser and try another supported sign-in route if necessary. Passkeys can be added or removed in Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys, and Sony documents how to return to password sign-in in its passkey help page.
