Set up a new tablet by identifying its platform and model, signing in with the right account, transferring or restoring your data, installing available updates, and checking the result before you erase the old device. For a child’s tablet, set up a child account and the relevant family controls rather than sharing an adult account. Android and iPad steps differ, and exact menus and features vary by model, operating-system version, and region.
Before you start: identify the tablet and prepare both devices
Check whether the new tablet is an Android device or an iPad, and note its exact model and operating-system version. Those details determine the available transfer methods, update instructions, and parental-control features. Keep the old tablet charged and available until you have checked the new one, and make sure you know the account credentials needed to restore data.

If the tablet is for a child, prepare the child’s own account and family supervision before setup. Google provides child-account guidance for Google Accounts; Apple’s family controls use a child Apple Account. Account eligibility and features can depend on age and country or region.

Google documents Android-to-Android direct transfer by cable or Wi-Fi, as well as restoring from a Google Account backup. A cable is optional: check the two tablet models before buying one. For iPad setup, Apple describes restoring from iCloud or a computer backup and moving data from Android. Follow the on-screen setup prompts for your device rather than treating one platform’s steps as universal.

Set up the tablet, then install available updates
- Connect to a trusted network. Start the tablet’s guided setup and connect it to Wi-Fi so account sign-in, transfer, and update checks can proceed.
- Choose the correct account and transfer option. Use the account associated with the backup or the child account you prepared. On Android, choose direct cable transfer, Wi-Fi transfer, or backup restore when offered. On iPad, select the relevant backup restore or Android migration path.
- Complete setup prompts. Review the options presented for system features, privacy, and account recovery. Available prompts differ across devices and software versions.
- Check for system updates. Install updates offered during setup. If you need to find the update control later, use the tablet maker’s instructions for your exact model and operating-system version; Android update menus and support periods are not universal across manufacturers.
- Check again after transfer or restore. Once setup has settled, look for any further available system update and allow pending downloads or restores to finish.
Apple’s setup guide includes update prompts and information about updating iPadOS. For Android tablets, consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support information: the available update and how long a model receives support depend on the device and maker.
Verify your data before wiping the old tablet
Do not erase, reset, or trade in the old tablet until you have confirmed that the new one contains what you need and that you can access your accounts. Google notes that a transfer to a device running an older Android version than the source may be incomplete. A backup or restore may also take time to finish.

- Open the new tablet’s photo and file apps and check for important items.
- Confirm that contacts and, where relevant, messages are present.
- Check that the apps you need are installed and that important apps can be opened or signed into.
- Verify access to your email, cloud account, and other essential services.
- Review the backup status or details rather than assuming every app and file was included.
This is a practical verification checklist, not a guarantee that every app’s data transfers. Some apps may require their own sign-in or migration process.
Review backup and privacy choices
Android and Google backup
Google says Android cloud backup can be managed in Settings and, when enabled, runs automatically over Wi-Fi. The included information can cover messages, contacts, app settings and preferences, identifiers, crash logs, and diagnostics used for backup or service operation. Google says backup data is uploaded to its servers. Review the backup details and make sure the account receiving the backup is the one you intend to use.

Backup is not the same as a complete copy of every file or app. If a particular app or document matters, check that it appears on the new tablet or confirm the app’s own export, sync, or restore process.
iPad backup and account choices
Apple’s setup options include restoring from an iCloud or computer backup. Review which Apple Account you use and the storage available for the backup option you choose. Apple’s setup materials also cover privacy settings, but settings and screens vary by iPadOS version; use the on-device controls and Apple’s guidance for the specific release instead of assuming one model-agnostic permissions checklist.

Protect account access
Use a device passcode and keep account recovery details current. Review app permissions and the account signed in on the tablet, especially if the device will be shared. These checks help you understand who can access the device and its synced data without assuming that a particular privacy setting applies to every app.

Set up parental controls when the tablet is for a child

Android: use the child’s Google Account and Family Link
Set up the child’s Google Account and use Family Link where it is available and supported. Google’s controls may include managing apps, screen time, location, and content restrictions, but the exact options depend on the account and device. Google notes that Play content restrictions do not prevent restricted material from appearing in search results or through direct links, so filters should not be treated as complete protection.

For supported devices running Android 17 or later, Google also describes on-device parental controls. Check Google’s current guidance and the tablet maker’s instructions to determine which controls apply to your exact device.
iPad: use Family Sharing and Screen Time

Make limits understandable and review them
Choose a small number of meaningful boundaries, explain them to the child, and revisit them as the child grows. Controls can help manage use, but they do not prevent every route to content or replace conversations about safe use.

Retire the old device only after the new tablet has finished its transfer or restore, you have checked important data and apps, and you can access the necessary accounts. If anything is missing, keep the old tablet intact while you investigate the relevant backup, transfer, or app-specific restore option.
