To set up a new Samsung Galaxy S26, turn it on, follow the on-screen prompts for language, terms and Wi-Fi, then choose whether to transfer data from your old phone. Finish account and screen-lock setup, activate your SIM or eSIM using your carrier’s instructions, and check for software updates. The exact first-run screens can vary by carrier, so follow the prompts shown on your device.
Before you start
- Keep your old phone available and charged if you plan to copy data from it.
- Have access to a Wi-Fi network for setup when the S26 prompts you to connect.
- Check how your carrier wants you to activate a physical SIM or eSIM. eSIM transfer options depend on the carrier and may also vary by device and region.

Set up the Galaxy S26
- Turn on the phone. Follow the opening prompts to choose a language and review the displayed terms.
- Connect to Wi-Fi when prompted. The setup wizard may present additional steps depending on your carrier and region; Samsung notes that the initial screens can vary. Samsung’s first-run setup guide
- Choose whether to copy data. When the wizard offers a transfer, select the option that matches your old device and use the Smart Switch instructions on the screen. If you are not ready, you can finish setup and transfer data later.
- Complete account and security prompts. Add or sign in to accounts as prompted, then choose a screen lock. Follow the choices available on your device; requirements can depend on the screen and services you select.
- Activate your mobile service. Follow your carrier’s instructions to insert or activate a physical SIM, or to set up an eSIM. Do not assume an eSIM will transfer automatically from your old phone.
- Check for software updates. After setup, review the phone’s software-update prompt or settings and install an available update when convenient.

Choose the right way to transfer data
Smart Switch supports several routes, but the options and content that can move depend on the old device, operating system and connection. Use the transfer screen on the S26 to see which methods are offered and check its completion summary rather than assuming every item copied.

From another Galaxy or Android phone
During first-run setup, choose the Galaxy/Android transfer option if it appears. Samsung’s US QR flow has you scan a code with the old phone, allow Smart Switch, choose a wired or wireless connection when offered, and select the data to copy. From an iPhone or iPad
Samsung documents Smart Switch transfers from iOS through multiple methods, including iCloud and connection-based transfer. A newer QR workflow described by Samsung Singapore specifically requires iOS 26.6 on the Apple device and Android 17 with One UI 9.0 or later on the Galaxy. Wireless or cable
Choose wireless when the phones offer it and you do not have a suitable cable. A cable transfer is another documented option; whether your existing cable fits both devices depends on their connectors. What may not transfer
Some content may be excluded because of encryption, digital-rights restrictions, app-specific handling or third-party policies. After Smart Switch finishes, review its summary, then separately verify important app logins and chats. If you already finished setup
You can still use Smart Switch after the first-run wizard to move photos, files and other supported data. Samsung says the QR quick-setup route is different: returning to that route requires a factory reset, which deletes the data currently on the S26.
