To set up a new Google Pixel Watch, pair it with a compatible Android phone in the Pixel Watch app, verify the matching pairing code, and follow the prompts. To bring data over from an older watch, turn on its backup before setup and select that backup when prompted on the new watch. If you are keeping the same watch but changing phones, use the separate Transfer watch workflow instead.
Choose the right migration path
First decide what is changing: the watch, the phone, or both. Restoring a backup sets up a new watch; Transfer watch moves an existing watch to a new phone. These are separate procedures.

What you need before setting up a new watch
Google lists an included charging cable, a Google Account, internet access, the latest Google Pixel Watch app, and a compatible Android phone on a compatible software version as prerequisites. Its general compatibility note says the watch works with most phones running Android 10.0 or newer; “most” is not a guarantee for every phone, watch generation, or location. Check Google’s compatibility and availability information for your specific model and region.
Recommended Free Tools
- Charge the phone and watch sufficiently for setup, and keep the watch near the phone.
- Turn on Bluetooth and allow the Pixel Watch app to use location when requested.
- Attach the band you want to use and adjust it for a comfortable fit.
- Check that the Pixel Watch app and phone are up to date.
Set up a new Pixel Watch
- Turn on the watch. Hold the crown for about three seconds, then bring the watch close to your Android phone.
- Start pairing. If a fast-pairing prompt appears on the phone, follow it. If it does not, open the Pixel Watch app and start setup there.
- Verify the pairing code. Compare the code on the phone with the one on the watch. Continue only if they match. Pairing can take a few minutes.
- Sign in and complete the prompts. Sign in to your Google Account, complete any verification and terms screens, and select the country where the device was purchased when asked for a limited-warranty check.
- Choose whether to restore a backup. Select an available backup if you are setting up from an older watch, or choose “Don’t restore” to start fresh.
- Set orientation and finish. Choose the wrist and crown orientation, then tap “Start using your watch” or choose “Set up more” to configure optional features such as Google Health, LTE, safety features, screen lock, Wallet, and additional apps. Google says the watch updates automatically to the latest version when you select “Start using your watch.” Google Pixel Watch Help: set up your watch
Restore a backup from an old watch to a new one
Do this before resetting, trading in, or giving away the old watch. Google recommends connecting it to Wi-Fi and placing it on its charger while backing it up. The backup process may take up to a few days, so check the Pixel Watch app for the latest backup time before you begin setting up the new watch.

What happens to LTE service?
For an LTE/eSIM watch, Google says the watch checks whether the new phone has the same number. If the number is unchanged, the watch continues to be twinned with it; if the number differs, you are prompted to set up twinning with the new number. This does not guarantee that a carrier plan will automatically transfer: confirm eligibility and activation steps with your carrier. A Pixel Watch LTE can connect directly to a cellular network through a compatible carrier plan, and carrier instructions vary by country and provider. Google Pixel Watch Help: cellular service

Fix common setup problems
The pairing codes do not match
Do not continue pairing. Restart the watch by holding the crown for three seconds, choosing Restart, and waiting for it to finish booting. Bring the watch close to the phone and try pairing again. Google Pixel Watch Help
The app says “Can’t connect”
Google describes this error for specific situations: pairing again to the same phone after that phone has been factory-reset, or trying to pair with a phone that was previously paired to the watch without first pairing the watch to a different phone. For those documented cases, Google’s sequence is to back up the watch, factory-reset it, pair again, and optionally restore the backup. This is not a universal fix for every connection problem. You are about to reset or hand off the old watch

LTE is optional; a Wi-Fi-only setup does not require carrier activation. An LTE model can connect to a cellular network through a carrier plan and may share the phone’s number once paired and activated with a compatible carrier. Confirm that your watch model, region, and plan are supported, and follow the carrier-specific instructions shown for your location.
