Set up the new phone, secure its screen and linked account, enable recovery tools, and verify your data before you erase, trade in, or stop using the old phone. Use the phone’s official transfer process, but check important apps and services individually: a migration flow may not move every sign-in, authenticator, or work profile.
1. Prepare before you start
Before beginning setup, make sure you can access the Apple Account or Google Account you use on the old phone. Check that its recovery details and additional authentication method still work. Keep the old phone charged and available; the new phone’s migration flow may ask you to use it or keep both phones nearby.

- Do not reset or trade in the old phone yet.
- Check whether your authenticator, banking, secure-messaging, and work apps require a separate transfer, sign-in, or re-enrollment. Do not assume those apps’ data or credentials will move with the general phone transfer.
- Have a working way to receive account verification codes that does not depend solely on the old phone.
2. Transfer data with the official setup flow
Start with the transfer option offered during setup by the new phone’s maker. Supported content and the steps vary by phone pair, so check the specific maker’s guide rather than assuming one platform’s transfer list applies to another.

Apple’s documented route is Move to iOS during the initial iPhone or iPad setup. Apple says to keep both devices close and connected to power until the iOS progress bar finishes. Using another app or taking a call on the Android phone before the transfer completes can interrupt it.

Apple lists contacts, message history, photos and videos, files, settings, bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, voice memos, call history, and calendars among the content Move to iOS can transfer. Some free apps may be matched in the App Store. Music, books, and PDFs may need to be moved manually. Phone-number, SIM, or eSIM activation may also require carrier steps. These details apply to Apple’s documented Android-to-iPhone/iPad route, not every migration method.
For other phone combinations
Compare the official options for the exact two devices before choosing. Check which content types are supported, whether the transfer is wired or wireless, whether both phones need to remain idle, whether SIM or eSIM activation involves your carrier, and what you must copy or set up separately.

3. Set a strong screen lock
Create a screen lock during setup and keep its fallback credential private. Google recommends an Android PIN of six or more digits, a complicated pattern, or a unique password. Biometrics can make unlocking more convenient, but they do not replace the fallback PIN, pattern, or password. Google also says Android’s screen lock protects certain private data before backup and may be required to restore protected data to a replacement device. Google Android Help states that it does not store or have access to your Android screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password.

If available and suitable for you, enroll fingerprint or face unlock. On supported Android devices, Identity Check can require biometric verification for sensitive actions outside designated trusted places; Google notes that it is not available on every device.

4. Secure your account and preserve recovery access
Review the security settings for the account linked to the phone. Turn on an available additional authentication option and confirm that recovery contact details or factors are current. Apple describes two-factor authentication as an extra layer of security for an Apple Account. Google offers passkeys that let you sign in using a fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock; Google says biometric data remains on your personal device and is never shared with Google.
Available account settings and authentication methods differ. Before removing the old phone as an authentication method, confirm that another recovery route works. Do not leave the new phone as the only way to regain access to the account it is meant to protect.

5. Turn on lost-device and theft protections
Find out how to locate, lock, or erase the phone remotely before you need to. Google says Find Hub can locate, lock, or erase a missing Android phone and is automatically turned on after a Google Account is added to an Android device. Confirm that the feature is available and enabled on your actual handset, and learn how to reach it from another device.

6. Review permissions and set up a backup
After migration, review which apps can access your location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, and background activity. Grant only access an app needs, and revisit permissions if its behavior or your needs change. Apple describes app permission controls and notifications when an app uses location in the background; the exact screens vary by platform and software version.
Choose a backup method available on your phone and check that a backup has completed successfully. Android recommends regular backups using cloud storage, local storage, or Google Drive. Backup coverage and steps differ by platform and service, so check what your chosen method includes rather than assuming every app or file is covered.
7. Update the phone and verify the transfer
Use the phone’s system-update screen to check for available updates and follow its prompts. Then check for app updates. Menu names and update behavior vary by device and software version.
Before retiring the old phone, confirm the new one has the data and access you need:
- Expected contacts, photos, videos, messages, and files are present.
- You can sign in to important accounts and open the authenticator, banking, secure-messaging, and work apps you rely on.
- Calls, mobile data, and your phone number work, including any required SIM or eSIM activation.
- The new phone has a working screen lock, account recovery route, lost-device feature, and completed backup.
Only after those checks should you remove the old phone from your routine or prepare it for a reset or trade-in. For services with their own transfer or deactivation steps, follow the service provider’s instructions before wiping the old device.
