How to Set Up a New OnePlus Phone: Transfer Data, Choose Defaults, and Check Privacy Settings

A model-aware guide to moving data to a new OnePlus phone, handling items that do not transfer, selecting default apps, and checking permissions, lock-screen privacy, backups, and reauthentication.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the new OnePlus phone’s Android setup flow or open OnePlus Clone Phone, keep the old device charged and unlocked, and choose the data you actually want to copy. A transfer is not a guaranteed clone: biometric credentials, hardware-bound items such as transit cards, incompatible apps, and some app data may stay behind. After migration, select your everyday default apps, then audit permissions, lock-screen privacy, backups, and security-sensitive apps on the new phone.

Before you turn off the old phone

Keep the old phone available until the new OnePlus has passed a deliberate check. You may need it for a verification code, an authenticator approval, a password-manager login, or a reauthentication prompt from a bank or messaging service.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Charge both phones and connect the new phone to reliable Wi-Fi.
  • Unlock the old phone and keep its screen available during the migration.
  • Confirm that you know the Google Account used for any Android backup you want to restore.
  • Make a fresh backup of the old phone before starting. A transfer can merge some information and overwrite existing information on the destination device.
  • Have the exact OnePlus model and installed OxygenOS version in mind. Labels and available features differ by model, region, carrier, and software release.

Do not erase or trade in the old phone merely because the transfer reports completion. Open the new phone’s Contacts, Messages, Photos, Files, Notes, and call history and spot-check older as well as recent items. Launch the accounts that matter most before you wipe anything.

Choose a transfer method

There are three practical routes: the Android setup wizard, OnePlus Clone Phone, and a cable or wireless transfer offered by OnePlus. The best choice depends on whether the source is Android or iPhone, whether you have a suitable data cable, and whether both devices can remain powered and unlocked.

Method Source phone Connection What it can offer Backup involved Important condition
Android setup flow Android Wireless or cable, according to the prompts Selected device data and an available Android backup; some apps and app data may not copy Yes, when an eligible Google backup exists Old phone should be charged, unlocked, nearby, and signed in when a backup is restored
OnePlus Clone Phone Android or, for the supported wireless route, iPhone Phone-to-phone wireless pairing, normally started with a QR code Contacts, call history, messages, photos, audio, videos, notes, apps, downloads, documents, and other categories shown in the selection screen Not required for the direct transfer Select categories carefully; incompatible and security-bound material is excluded
OnePlus cable transfer Android or another source supported by the setup screen Data-capable cable Categories offered by the OnePlus transfer screen Not required for the direct transfer Check both ports and verify that the cable carries data, not only power
OnePlus wireless transfer Android or iPhone, as offered by the phone’s flow Direct Wi-Fi connection Categories offered by the OnePlus transfer screen Not required for the direct transfer Keep both phones close, powered, and unlocked until the process finishes

OnePlus describes cable, Android-to-Android Wi-Fi, and iOS-to-Android Wi-Fi routes. The exact buttons can change with the model and OxygenOS build, so follow the labels on the phones rather than assuming that another OnePlus model has the same screen.

Transfer data during Android setup

This is usually the simplest route when the old phone is Android and the new phone has not yet been configured.

  1. Power on the new OnePlus and proceed through language, region, network, and account prompts until Android offers to copy apps and data.
  2. Choose the Android-device transfer option. Keep the old phone nearby, unlocked, and connected to Wi-Fi if the screen requests it.
  3. Sign in with the Google Account associated with the backup you want to use. If Android offers a recent backup, check its device and date before selecting it.
  4. Choose the categories or individual items shown by the wizard. Do not assume that selecting all produces an exact duplicate.
  5. Leave both phones powered until the transfer or restore reports completion. Large photo and video libraries can continue restoring after the initial setup screen closes.
  6. Finish setup, then inspect contacts, messages, photos, files, downloads, and the apps you use for work or two-factor authentication.

Google’s Android setup documentation warns that some apps and app data do not copy. A restored app may therefore install without its local database, offline files, sign-in state, or device-specific settings. Open each important app and follow its own restore or sign-in process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use OnePlus Clone Phone

Clone Phone is useful when you want to choose categories directly from the old device. OnePlus describes the process as pairing the phones through a QR code and selecting content; its support tagline is “Switch to your new OnePlus phone quickly using the Clone Phone App.”

  1. Open Clone Phone on the new OnePlus. If it is not visible, use the phone’s app search and follow the setup prompt supplied with your model.
  2. Choose the option indicating that this is the new phone. The app displays a QR code or pairing screen.
  3. Open Clone Phone on the old device, choose that it is the old phone, and scan the new phone’s QR code when prompted.
  4. Approve the connection on both phones. Review the category list instead of accepting every category automatically.
  5. Select the contacts, call history, messages, photos, audio, videos, notes, apps, downloads, documents, or other categories you need.
  6. Start the migration and keep both displays awake or unlockable until the app says it is finished.
  7. On the new phone, check representative files and open important apps before deleting anything from the old phone.

A direct migration can merge some content and overwrite other content already present on the destination phone. A backup gives you a recovery option if the selection was wrong or an item was replaced.

Transfer from an iPhone or with a cable

iPhone to OnePlus over Wi-Fi

Use the iOS-to-Android option presented by the OnePlus transfer flow. Follow the pairing instructions on both phones and select only the categories the screen makes available. iPhone and Android store data differently, so the result is category-based rather than a byte-for-byte copy. Review contacts, photos, videos, calendars, files, and messages individually after the process.

Wired migration

Select the cable option only when you have a cable that supports data. OnePlus’s general transfer instructions do not establish which connector combination ships with every model, so inspect the ports on both phones and the cable specification before starting. A cable that only charges will not provide the expected transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the phones with the data-capable cable when the setup or Clone Phone screen asks you to do so.
  2. Unlock both devices and approve any prompts asking for permission to access data.
  3. Choose the categories to copy and start the transfer.
  4. Keep the cable connected until the completion message appears; do not use a loose adapter that can disconnect when the phones move.
  5. Verify the result on the new phone before disconnecting and before resetting the old one.

What will not transfer reliably

Plan for exceptions rather than treating migration as a complete clone. OnePlus’s Clone Phone guidance identifies several classes of data that may not migrate:

  • Biometric credentials: fingerprints and face-unlock templates are tied to the device’s security hardware. Enroll them again on the new phone.
  • Hardware-bound items: transit cards and similar credentials may remain usable only on the original device and may require a separate issuer process.
  • Incompatible apps or data: an app may not be available for the new Android version, processor, region, or device configuration.
  • Protected sign-in secrets: app passwords, passkeys, authenticator registrations, and banking approvals may require fresh authentication even when the app itself is copied.
  • App-local content: games, offline downloads, draft documents, and databases may depend on an app’s own export or cloud restore feature.

For these items, use the original app’s account, export, or recovery procedure while the old phone still works. Do not infer from an installed app icon that its data and session have transferred.

Verify the migration before wiping the old phone

Use a short, deliberate acceptance check instead of relying on the transfer percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose default apps deliberately

Defaults determine which app opens a link, starts a phone call, handles SMS, or acts as the home screen. They are convenience choices, not a requirement for completing setup. You do not need to replace every system app on day one.

Defaults worth deciding

  • Browser: choose the browser whose password, bookmark, tracking, and synchronization behavior you understand.
  • Phone: select the dialer that provides the call-screening, contacts, and spam controls you want.
  • SMS or messaging: verify that the selected app supports your carrier, group messages, media, and backup expectations.
  • Home app or launcher: choose an alternative only if you want its layout, gesture, or search behavior.
  • Assistant and wallet: select the service you actually use, then complete its separate account and payment verification.

Find the default-app controls

There is no single menu path guaranteed for every OnePlus model, region, and OxygenOS release. Open Settings and search for default apps, then open the result that lists browser, phone, messaging, home, assistant, or wallet handlers. If search does not expose the control, consult the manual for the exact model and installed OxygenOS version.

After changing a default, test it from the action that invokes it: tap a web link for the browser, call a contact for the dialer, receive an SMS for the messaging app, and press the Home gesture for the launcher. If Android asks whether to use an app once or always, choose Always only when you want that app to become the handler.

Supported features and update timing vary by device, country, and carrier. A phone marketed with a newer OxygenOS release is not necessarily shipped with that release, so check Settings and the device’s software information before following version-specific instructions.

Review privacy and security settings

Audit app permissions

Open the permission controls and inspect sensitive access rather than accepting every request. Android makes permission choices user-controlled; an app should receive access that matches the feature you intend to use.

On an OxygenOS 14 manual, the documented example is Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Treat that as a version-specific example, not a universal path for OxygenOS 15, OxygenOS 16, or every regional build. If the labels differ, search Settings for Permission manager or App permissions.

  • Location: choose approximate or precise access as appropriate, and remove background access from apps that do not need continuous location.
  • Camera and microphone: allow them only for features that use them, such as video calls, scanning, or voice recording. Revoke access when an app’s function does not require it.
  • Contacts: check whether an app genuinely needs your address book or merely offers optional social features.
  • Photos and videos: prefer limited or selected-item access when the software offers that choice.
  • Notifications: decide which apps can interrupt you and which can display sensitive content.

Review permissions after installing the first batch of apps, because a copied app can request access again on the new device even if its old permission state was different.

Protect the lock screen

Set a strong screen-lock method before storing sensitive information on the phone. Add a fingerprint or face unlock only if you want that convenience, and remember that biometric credentials normally must be enrolled again because they do not migrate between devices. Check the lock-screen notification setting so message previews, one-time codes, and calendar details are not exposed while the phone is locked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check accounts, backup, and device finding

Review which accounts sync on the new phone and whether photos, contacts, app data, and device settings are included in the backup service you intend to use. Then locate the phone’s Find My Device or equivalent device-finding control and confirm that it is enabled for the account you trust. Exact labels and availability vary, so use Settings search or the model manual rather than assuming one path.

Reauthenticate sensitive services

Open banking, authenticator, password-manager, work, and primary messaging apps. Approve the new-device registration, scan a recovery code, or enter a password when the service asks. Never assume that a copied app carries over its sign-in secret or second-factor enrollment.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The phones cannot pair

Confirm that both devices are unlocked, nearby, charged, and on the setup screen that corresponds to their roles. Turn off a competing VPN or hotspot temporarily if it prevents the direct wireless connection, then restart the pairing flow. If wireless pairing remains unreliable, use the Android restore option or a verified data-capable cable.

The transfer stops or appears incomplete

Keep both screens awake, reconnect to stable Wi-Fi, and remove any case that prevents a cable from seating fully. Check free storage on the new phone. If only one category is missing, use the old app’s export or cloud restore instead of repeating every category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An app is installed but empty

Open the app and sign in with the original account. Look for its internal restore, import, or device-transfer tool. If it uses an authenticator or hardware key, complete that registration separately while the old phone remains available.

A default keeps changing

Return to Settings search for default apps, select the intended handler, and clear the competing app’s defaults if the system offers that control. Test the action again and update the app if it is not compatible with the current OxygenOS build.

An app requests too much access

Deny the permission, select a less precise option when available, or uninstall the app if its core feature cannot work without access you consider excessive. Revisit Permission manager after updates because an app’s requested capabilities can change.

A practical first-day checklist

  1. Complete Android setup, Clone Phone, or the OnePlus cable or wireless flow.
  2. Check contacts, messages, photos, files, notes, call history, and downloads.
  3. Open security-sensitive apps and complete every reauthentication prompt.
  4. Choose browser, phone, messaging, home, assistant, and wallet defaults that fit your habits.
  5. Search Settings for Permission manager and review location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos, and notifications.
  6. Set the screen lock, biometric enrollment, lock-screen notification visibility, backup, account sync, and device-finding controls.
  7. Make a test call, send a message, verify mobile data and Bluetooth, and check charging.
  8. Keep the old phone intact until the checklist passes and any missing data has been recovered.

Bottom line

Set up the OnePlus with the built-in Android flow or Clone Phone, choose only the data you need, and treat the result as a migration rather than a perfect clone. Verify important information and accounts before wiping the old device. Then set defaults through Settings search and perform a permission and lock-screen audit using labels that match your exact OxygenOS version.
