Start by deciding whether to migrate your old files and settings or set up the Mac as new. Then sign in to your Apple Account, choose only the iCloud services you want, enable Find My, review security and update controls, and create a Time Machine backup. You do not need to turn on every cloud feature to use a new Mac safely.
1. Choose migration or a fresh setup
During Setup Assistant, you can transfer information from an iPhone or iPad, another Mac, a Time Machine backup or startup disk, or a Windows PC. You can also set up the Mac as new and move files or install apps selectively. Apple outlines these paths in its Mac setup guide.

Migrate from another device when you want continuity
Migration can reduce the work of bringing files and settings to a replacement Mac. Choose the source that matches what you have available, such as your previous Mac or its Time Machine backup.

Set up as new when you want a selective start
A fresh setup avoids carrying over everything from an old computer. You can install the apps you still use and move only the files you need. Neither choice is right for everyone; base it on whether convenience or a clean slate matters more to you.

Choose what should sync
Enable a service when you want its data available across your signed-in devices and, where applicable, stored in iCloud. You can control which apps use iCloud and whether Desktop and Documents folders are stored in iCloud Drive; see Apple’s iCloud settings guide. Consider which files you want available across devices before enabling Desktop and Documents sync.

Advanced Data Protection uses end-to-end encryption for the majority of iCloud data. It requires you to set up a recovery contact or recovery key: Apple does not hold the keys needed to recover that protected data. Choose a recovery method you can maintain, and check availability in your region before turning it on.

4. Review security and privacy settings
Decide how to use FileVault
FileVault protects the Mac’s startup disk and requires a login password. When you enable it, choose either an account-based unlock path or a generated recovery key. The recovery option matters if you forget the login password: if you choose a recovery key, keep it secure and accessible so you can use it when needed. Apple’s FileVault guide explains the available choices.

Review app download permissions
macOS offers controls for allowing apps from the App Store, or from the App Store and identified developers. Choose the option that fits how you install software; don’t broaden the setting unless your workflow requires it. See Apple’s Privacy & Security settings guide for the controls available on your version.
Best Value
Choose how to approve accessories
On Apple silicon laptops, USB and Thunderbolt devices and SD cards may require approval. The accessory connection setting lets you choose how connections are handled. Consider the balance between convenience and restricting unapproved connections, particularly if you regularly use docks, drives, or memory cards.
5. Check for macOS updates
Open System Settings > General > Software Update to check for updates. Apple’s update instructions also describe automatic options. Depending on your version, you can turn on automatic downloads, automatic macOS installation, and automatic installation of security responses and system files. For a laptop, automatic downloads may require the power adapter to be connected.
If you prefer to review update timing, check manually and leave broader automatic installation off. Whichever approach you choose, pay particular attention to the option for security responses and system files rather than treating all update controls as one setting.
6. Set up a Time Machine backup
Time Machine is built into macOS and can automatically back up files—including apps, music, photos, email, and documents—to a USB drive or other storage device. Connect a suitable external drive and follow the Mac’s prompts to select it for Time Machine. Apple’s Time Machine setup guide explains the process. An external USB storage drive is optional if you already have a compatible storage device.
iCloud sync and Time Machine serve different purposes: iCloud makes selected data available across signed-in devices, while Time Machine creates a local copy intended for recovering files. They can complement one another; syncing files is not a substitute for a local backup.
