Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe safest sequence is simple: keep the old phone or a verified backup intact, choose the transfer method that matches your old phone, and erase or trade in that phone only after checking the new iPhone. iPhone users can migrate with Quick Start, iCloud, a computer backup, or a cable. Android users should use Move to iOS during initial setup, or transfer items manually if setup is already complete.
Protect your original data before you start
A transfer is not a substitute for a backup. Treat the old phone as your source copy until you have inspected the new iPhone and opened the important apps.

- Keep the old iPhone or Android phone powered on and available.
- Know the password for the Apple Account you will use on the new iPhone. You may need it to restore backups, download apps, or sign in to services.
- Have Wi-Fi or another reliable internet connection. Quick Start and Move to iOS both depend on the phones communicating during setup, and cloud restores need internet access.
- Check the new iPhone’s storage capacity against the amount of photos, videos and other material you plan to move. A migration can be incomplete if the destination runs out of space.
- Connect both phones to power before a long migration. Do not shut either phone down or move it away while a transfer is running.
If you bought an eligible new iPhone and do not have enough iCloud space for a backup, Apple’s current iPhone User Guide says you may qualify for temporary iCloud storage for up to three weeks. On the old iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Get Started and follow the prompts. Eligibility and the exact screens can vary, so use the offer shown on the device rather than assuming extra storage is available.

| Old phone | Best first choice | When another route makes sense | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | Quick Start with direct device-to-device transfer | Choose an iCloud download if you want to begin using the new phone while content downloads; restore an iCloud or computer backup if the old device is unavailable. | Direct transfer keeps both phones occupied until it finishes. An iCloud download lets you use the new phone sooner, but apps and data continue downloading in the background. |
| Android, new iPhone still at setup | Move to iOS from the From Android setup option | Use a compatible cable if the prompted devices and ports support a wired connection. | Some content categories transfer automatically; music, books and PDFs generally require manual handling. Free apps can be matched only when the app is available in both stores and supports the transfer. |
| Android, iPhone setup already completed | Manual transfer without erasing the iPhone | Erase the iPhone and restart setup if you want the full Move to iOS workflow. | Manual transfer means reinstalling apps and moving photos, videos and documents in separate steps. |
Apple says transfer time depends on network conditions and the amount of data being moved. There is no reliable universal duration, so plan for the phones to remain connected until the progress indicator and setup screens have finished.

Prepare an old iPhone for Quick Start
- Install available software updates on the old iPhone, then make a fresh iCloud backup or a backup to a Mac or PC. A current backup gives you a recovery path if the direct migration is interrupted.
- Confirm that the old iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and that Bluetooth is on. Quick Start uses the nearby old device to configure the new one.
- Place both phones next to each other and connect them to power. Keep the old iPhone unlocked when Quick Start asks you to authenticate.
- Turn on the new iPhone. When the Quick Start card appears on the old phone, review the Apple Account shown and continue.
- Use the old iPhone’s camera to scan the animation on the new iPhone, then enter the old phone’s passcode on the new one when prompted.
- Complete Face ID or Touch ID setup, create or confirm a passcode, and reach the transfer choice.
Complete an iPhone-to-iPhone migration
Option 1: Direct transfer
Select the option to transfer directly from the previous iPhone. Keep both devices close together and plugged in until the new iPhone reports completion. Photos, messages, settings and other device data are copied as part of the migration, but individual apps may still need to download from the App Store afterward.
Do not use the old phone for calls, remove it from power, or restart either device while the transfer is active. If a phone displays a progress bar, leave it on that screen. The exact time varies with the data volume and wireless conditions.
Option 2: Download from iCloud
Choose the iCloud route when you need to start using the new iPhone while the rest of the content arrives. Apple describes this behavior as: “If you download from iCloud, your apps and data download in the background so that you can start using your new device right away.” Keep the new iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power so the remaining apps, photos and data can finish downloading.

This choice depends on a usable iCloud backup. If the backup is old, material created since that backup will not be present until you move it separately or make a newer backup. Check the backup date on the old phone before selecting it.
Restore from an iCloud or computer backup
Use an iCloud backup
At the new iPhone’s setup screens, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup, sign in with the same Apple Account, and select the backup by date and size. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power while apps and data download. If more than one backup is listed, use the newest one that belongs to the old phone.
Use a Mac or PC backup
If you made a local backup, select the restore-from-computer option during setup and connect the new iPhone to the computer that holds the backup. Depending on the computer and operating system, Apple uses Finder, the Apple Devices app, or iTunes for this process. Choose the intended backup and keep the cable connected until restoration ends.

A computer restore is useful when the old phone cannot complete Quick Start or when an internet connection is too limited for a large cloud download. The backup must actually contain the material you need; restoring an older local snapshot does not recover newer photos or messages that were never copied into it.

Consider a wired migration
Apple also documents a cable-based migration path. A USB-C cable can make a transfer faster for compatible Android-to-iPhone combinations, and a wired connection can also be offered for supported iPhone migrations. Check the ports on both phones and use a data-capable cable that fits them. A cable is optional: wireless Quick Start, iCloud and computer backups remain available when compatible hardware or a suitable cable is not.
Move from Android with Move to iOS
Move to iOS works during iPhone setup. If the new iPhone is already configured, the automatic workflow requires erasing it and starting setup again; the no-erase alternative is manual transfer described below.

Step-by-step setup
- Check the new iPhone’s available capacity. Select the Android content you want to move and make sure it can fit, especially if the Android phone contains a large camera library.
- Connect both phones to power. Keep them close together and avoid switching away from the transfer process.
- Turn on the new iPhone and proceed through setup until the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen. Choose From Android.
- On the Android phone, install and open Apple’s Move to iOS app, then follow its prompts. Enter the temporary code displayed by the iPhone.
- Join the temporary Wi-Fi network created for the transfer when the app asks. Select the categories you want to move and start the transfer.
- Leave Move to iOS open on the Android phone. Wait until the loading bar on the iPhone reaches the end, even if the Android app appears to have finished first.
- Finish iPhone setup, then inspect the transferred photos, conversations and contacts before making any decision about the Android phone.
Content Apple lists as transferable
| Category | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Contacts | Contacts selected in Move to iOS can be brought into the iPhone. |
| Messages | Message history and SMS are among the supported categories; verify the conversations that matter to you. |
| Photos and videos | Camera photos, videos and albums are supported. Large libraries require enough free space on the iPhone. |
| Files and folders | Compatible files and folders can be selected during the transfer. |
| Settings and bookmarks | Some device settings, web bookmarks, email accounts and calendars can move. |
| WhatsApp messages and media are included in Apple’s listed categories, subject to the prompts and compatibility shown on your devices. | |
| Voice Memos and call history | These are also listed as supported transfer categories. |
| Apps | Some free apps can be matched when the app exists on both Google Play and the App Store and supports the transfer feature. You may still need to download the iPhone version and sign in. |
Items that need a separate plan
Apple identifies music, books and PDFs as items that require manual transfer. Paid apps, subscriptions, game progress and app-specific account data are not guaranteed to reproduce simply because an app is reinstalled. After installing an app, sign in using its own account and check whether its service offers cloud sync or an export/import feature.

Restart setup to use Move to iOS
Move to iOS is presented during the initial setup flow. To use it after setup has finished, back up anything already created on the new iPhone, then open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. After the erase, start setup again and select From Android on Transfer Your Apps & Data. Erasing is destructive, so do not choose this path until you have copied anything on the new phone that you intend to keep.

- Photos and videos: copy them from Android to a computer, then sync or import them to the iPhone using the computer’s Apple device tools, or use a cloud photo service and sign in on both phones.
- Documents: upload them to a cloud storage service accessible from both phones, copy them through a computer, or use the document app’s own import function.
- Email, calendars and contacts: add the same accounts in iPhone settings and allow their data to sync. For locally stored contacts, export them from Android in a format your chosen service accepts.
- Apps: search for each iPhone version in the App Store, install it, and sign in. Reinstallation alone does not promise that local app data or game progress will appear.
- Music, books and PDFs: move files through a computer or the service that originally supplied them, then open them in an iPhone-compatible app.
Verify the new iPhone before retiring the old one
Use a deliberate checklist rather than assuming that a completed progress bar means every account and file is ready.
- Open Photos and check recent pictures, older albums and several videos. If you use cloud photos, leave the phone on Wi-Fi long enough for thumbnails and full-resolution items to load.
- Open Messages and inspect recent conversations, group threads and any attachments that you cannot replace.
- Open Contacts, Calendar, Mail and Notes, then confirm that the expected accounts are present and syncing.
- Launch the apps you use for banking, authentication, work, travel, health or password management. Sign in again when required and complete any security verification.
- Check locally stored documents, downloaded media and voice recordings.
- Make a test call, send a message and confirm that cellular service, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work with the accessories you rely on.
Only after these checks should you sign out of the old phone, remove its cellular plan if instructed by your carrier, and erase it for a trade-in or handoff. Keep the old phone and at least one usable backup until you are satisfied that nothing important remains only on it.
Troubleshoot common transfer problems
Quick Start does not appear
- Confirm that the old iPhone is unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi and has Bluetooth enabled.
- Move the phones next to each other, connect them to power and restart the setup process if the prompt was dismissed.
- If the old phone cannot participate, restore the new iPhone from an iCloud or computer backup instead.
The transfer is extremely slow
Large photo libraries and weak or busy network conditions increase the time. Keep both devices powered and nearby; Apple specifically notes that transfer times vary with network conditions and the amount of data. Do not estimate completion from a fixed percentage or promise a particular number of minutes.
The new iPhone reports insufficient storage
Stop and compare the selected data with the iPhone’s capacity. Remove duplicate or unwanted videos from the source only after preserving a backup, or move a smaller set first and handle archives manually. A destination that fills during migration can leave the transfer partial.
Move to iOS stops or the progress bar does not finish
- Keep the Move to iOS app open on Android and leave both phones untouched and connected to power.
- Disable settings that automatically switch away from the temporary transfer network, such as a phone feature that changes Wi-Fi when internet access appears weak.
- If the attempt fails, restart both devices and begin the setup flow again. Do not erase the Android phone while any content remains unverified on the iPhone.
An app or its data is missing
Check whether the app was matched and installed, then search for its iPhone version manually. Sign in with the original account and look for the service’s own sync or restore option. Some apps keep data only on the old device or use a separate migration process, so no general iPhone transfer can guarantee every app’s internal state.
A practical decision guide
- Choose Quick Start direct transfer when the old phone is an iPhone, both phones are available, and you can leave them occupied until completion.
- Choose iCloud download when you have a current backup and want to begin using the new iPhone while downloads continue in the background.
- Choose a computer restore when you already maintain a current local backup or internet access is unsuitable for a large cloud restore.
- Choose Move to iOS when the old phone is Android and the new iPhone is still at setup. It provides the broadest documented automatic transfer for supported categories.
- Choose manual Android transfer when the iPhone is already configured and you do not want to erase it, accepting that each category and app must be handled separately.
The safest finish is not the fastest-looking progress bar; it is a verified new phone with the old phone and a recoverable backup still intact until your photos, messages, accounts and essential apps have all passed inspection.
