The WordPress Loop is the code that turns a query’s posts into the titles, content, metadata, and links visitors see in a theme. have_posts() checks whether another result is available; the_post() advances to it and prepares the global post data for template tags. You can adjust the main query with pre_get_posts, create an additional list with WP_Query or get_posts(), and restore the original post context with wp_reset_postdata(). Avoid query_posts(): WordPress documents it as a complete override of the main query that can break pagination and discard URL-derived variables.

What the WordPress Loop does
WordPress builds a query from the front-end URL a visitor requests. A home page, category archive, search result, author archive, and single-post URL each produce a different set of query variables. The selected template file runs the primary Loop over that result.

The iteration decides whether another result exists; the setup step makes template tags refer to the current result.
A minimal Loop looks like this:
<?php
if ( have_posts() ) :
while ( have_posts() ) :
the_post();
the_title();
the_content();
endwhile;
else :
echo 'No posts found.';
endif;
?>
The code has three distinct parts:
- Initial check: The first
have_posts()call determines whether the query returned at least one post. - Iteration: The
whilecondition checks for another result on every pass. - Setup and output:
the_post()advances to the next result and prepares the title, content, author, permalink, and other template data used in the body.
If the query is empty, the else branch renders a useful empty state instead of leaving a blank region. Every archive, search template, or custom query that can return zero posts should have an equivalent branch.

How have_posts() and the_post() work together
have_posts() checks the query cursor
have_posts() asks the current query object whether another post is available. It does not output anything and it does not set up a new current post. In the standard pattern, it is called once before the loop and again as the while condition.
the_post() advances and sets global context
the_post() moves the query to its next post and sets up the global post context. Functions such as the_title(), the_content(), the_author(), and permalink-related template tags then read the post selected by that call. Calling output tags before the_post() means there may be no correctly prepared post for them to use.
Why an extra “peek” can be surprising
When WP_Query::have_posts() reaches the end of its result set, it returns false, fires the loop_end action, and rewinds the posts. A later have_posts() check can therefore begin from the start again. Do not add an extra check inside a loop merely to “peek” at whether a post remains; it can change how a later check behaves.
The main query and the template that displays it
The main query is the query WordPress creates for the requested URL. The primary Loop consumes that query in the template selected by the theme. On an archive, for example, the query contains posts matching the archive’s taxonomy or date. On a search page, it contains results matching the search terms.
Changing the main query and adding another list are different jobs. Before writing code, decide whether you need to alter the posts that define the page or simply display extra posts alongside them.

| Need | Preferred approach | When it runs | Main-query impact | Reset required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Change which posts an archive or search page contains | pre_get_posts |
After query variables are created, before the database query runs | Changes the targeted main query | No separate post-data reset |
| Render an additional list inside a template | new WP_Query( $args ) |
When the template executes the secondary query | Leaves the main query object intact, but changes global post context while iterating | Call wp_reset_postdata() after the loop |
| Fetch a simple additional list | get_posts( $args ) |
When the function is called | Uses a separate query and does not alter the main Loop | Use the returned posts directly; if you call setup_postdata() yourself, restore context afterward |
Customize the main query with pre_get_posts
The pre_get_posts action fires after WordPress has created query variables but before it executes the database query. The callback receives the query object that is about to run, so you can change its parameters before SQL is generated.

Always target the intended query. A site may run separate queries for the main page, a sidebar, a footer, an embedded component, a REST request, or a plugin feature. Changing every query can produce unexpected results.
<?php
function my_archive_size( $query ) {
if ( ! is_admin()
&& $query->is_main_query()
&& $query->is_archive() ) {
$query->set( 'posts_per_page', 15 );
}
}
add_action( 'pre_get_posts', 'my_archive_size' );
?>
What each guard does
! is_admin()limits the change to front-end requests rather than the administration area.$query->is_main_query()ensures that only the page’s primary query is changed.$query->is_archive()restricts the rule to archive requests.$query->set( 'posts_per_page', 15 )changes the archive size before the query runs.
Use conditional methods on the passed $query object. A global conditional or an unqualified callback can target the wrong query at the time the hook runs.
Pagination considerations
When you alter an archive’s main query, WordPress still treats it as the page’s paginated query. Keep the query’s normal pagination variables intact and test the first, middle, and last pages. Avoid adding an offset unless you also design how page counts and navigation will be calculated; an offset-based design can make posts disappear between pages.
Create a secondary Loop with WP_Query
Use a secondary query when the page needs another group of posts in addition to the main content, such as a “News” list in a sidebar or related posts below an article. WP_Query supplies its own have_posts() and the_post() methods.

$related->the_post();
the_title( '<h2>', '</h2>' );
endwhile;
else :
echo '<p>No related posts found.</p>';
endif;
wp_reset_postdata();
?>
Why the object methods matter
The loop calls $related->have_posts() and $related->the_post(), not the global functions, so the iteration is tied to the secondary query. Inside the body, the ordinary template tags can still be used because the_post() sets the current global post to the secondary result.
Reset immediately after the secondary loop
Calling the_post() changes the global post context. wp_reset_postdata() restores the context associated with the main query. Put it immediately after the secondary loop, before rendering any markup that depends on the page’s original post, author, title, or permalink.
Keep the empty branch
A category may contain fewer posts than requested, or none at all. The if/else structure prevents an empty component from failing silently and gives you a place to explain that no matching posts were found.
Use get_posts() for a straightforward additional list
get_posts( $args ) returns posts from a separate query and does not alter the main Loop. It is useful when you want to iterate over returned post objects yourself and do not need the full control of a persistent WP_Query object.

echo '<li>';
echo esc_html( get_the_title( $news_post ) );
echo '</li>';
endforeach;
echo '</ul>';
else :
echo '<p>No news posts found.</p>';
endif;
?>
This pattern reads each returned object explicitly. If you instead call setup_postdata() to make template tags operate on one of these objects, restore the previous context when finished.

Why query_posts() is an anti-pattern
The official Developer Reference states: “This function will completely override the main query and isn’t intended for use by plugins or themes.” That behavior is the reason replacing the main query with query_posts() is unsafe.
A call to query_posts() can discard query variables derived from the URL and interfere with pagination. It also performs work that the main query has already done, then substitutes a new result set where the template and navigation expected the original one.
Choose the alternative that matches the requirement:

Global post state: the source of many Loop bugs
WordPress template tags often read global state rather than receiving a post object as an argument. The current state normally belongs to the main query, but every call to a secondary query’s the_post() changes it temporarily.
Symptoms of a missing reset include a page heading showing a related post’s title, an author link pointing to the wrong person, or a permalink in the main content resolving to the last item in a sidebar list. The fix is structural: finish the secondary Loop, call wp_reset_postdata(), and only then render markup that relies on the main post.
Best Value
For multiple secondary loops, reset after each one. Do not assume that a later query will automatically restore the page’s original context.
Build a customized Loop safely: a decision process
- Identify the target. Decide whether you are changing the posts that define the requested page or adding a separate list.
- Choose the timing. Use
pre_get_postsfor changes before SQL runs; useWP_Queryorget_posts()when the template needs an additional result set. - Constrain the scope. For
pre_get_posts, combine front-end, main-query, and request-type checks so unrelated queries remain untouched. - Write an empty state. Every query that can return zero posts needs an
elsebranch or an equivalent check. - Preserve pagination. Let the main query manage its page variables when filtering archives. Treat offsets as a separate pagination design, not a quick addition.
- Restore context. After a secondary loop calls
the_post(), runwp_reset_postdata()before using main-query template tags. - Test boundaries. Check an empty result, fewer results than requested, a full result page, and the final pagination page. For nested components, verify every title, author, and permalink after each reset.
Common failure modes and fixes
The archive shows the wrong number of posts
Check that the callback runs only for the intended main archive query and that the value is set before the query executes. An unconditional pre_get_posts callback can also modify a sidebar or another custom query.
Recommended Free Tools
Pagination links skip or repeat posts
Look for query_posts() or an offset added without a matching pagination strategy. Move archive changes to pre_get_posts and preserve the main query’s pagination variables.
The main title changes after a related-posts component
The secondary loop probably called the_post() without a following wp_reset_postdata(). Add the reset directly after the secondary loop.
A custom list is empty even though matching posts exist
Confirm that the query arguments describe the intended category or other constraint, that the loop uses the same query object that was created, and that the empty branch is not being triggered by an earlier cursor check.
Output tags show no post data
Ensure that the_post() runs before the_title(), the_content(), or other template tags. The check performed by have_posts() does not itself prepare a current post.
A compact comparison of the three approaches
| Approach | Best use | Advantages | Risks or responsibilities |
|---|---|---|---|
pre_get_posts |
Adjust the requested page’s main archive, search, or other query before execution | Works with the existing main query and its pagination model | Requires precise conditional checks; an over-broad callback affects unrelated queries |
WP_Query |
Build a fully controlled secondary Loop | Provides query-specific methods and arguments for an additional list | the_post() changes global post context; call wp_reset_postdata() |
get_posts() |
Retrieve a simple additional collection | Does not alter the main Loop and returns post objects directly | You handle iteration and any post-data setup explicitly |
query_posts() |
Not recommended for theme or plugin customization | None that outweighs replacing the existing main query | Can override URL-derived variables and disrupt pagination |
What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
The documented Loop behavior explains query state, post setup, secondary-loop resets, and the dangers of replacing the main query. It does not establish a universal maximum number of posts, a general performance benchmark, or a single “best” query size for every site. Performance depends on the query, database, theme, plugins, and hosting environment; choose arguments for the page’s actual content and test the resulting request.
The safest customization is therefore the smallest change that matches the target: modify the existing main query before it runs, or isolate an additional list in its own query and restore global state immediately afterward.
