Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo get a new home internet connection online, first identify what connection and equipment your provider supplies, then connect and configure the modem or gateway and router, activate service if required, and secure Wi-Fi with a strong password and a supported encryption mode. The exact wiring and activation steps depend on your internet provider, service type, and equipment model.
Do I need a modem and a router?
A modem connects your home to an internet service delivered over a line such as coaxial cable, telephone wiring, or fiber, then provides an Ethernet connection to a router. A router shares that connection with devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Some internet service provider (ISP) gateways combine modem and router functions in one device. In some apartments and dorms, the building provides Ethernet directly, so you may not need a separate modem. Ask your ISP or building which handoff you have and whether the connection must be activated. Google’s modem guide explains the distinction and common arrangements.

How do I set up a new internet connection?
- Confirm the service handoff and equipment. Check whether the connection comes from a modem, an all-in-one gateway, a fiber terminal, or an Ethernet wall jack. Find out whether the ISP requires activation or has equipment rules for customer-owned routers.
- Connect the equipment according to its model instructions. With a separate modem and router, connect the router’s WAN or internet port to the modem’s Ethernet port. Follow the labels and diagrams for your specific devices; ports and setup steps vary. As one provider-specific example, Google Fiber connects a router to its Fiber Jack with Ethernet. That arrangement is not a universal instruction for other fiber, cable, or DSL services. Google Fiber’s own-router instructions show its setup.
- Power on and activate service if necessary. Follow the ISP’s activation instructions and wait for the equipment to indicate that it is online. Activation methods and status lights vary, so use the provider’s instructions rather than assuming a particular light pattern.
- Open the router’s app or administration page. Use the setup method supplied by the manufacturer or ISP to configure Wi-Fi and apply firmware updates. Before changing an existing network’s settings, Apple recommends backing up its configuration; after a change, devices may need to forget the network and rejoin it. Apple’s router settings guidance covers these considerations.
- Choose a Wi-Fi network name and password. Use a strong password for people joining the network. Pick a name that does not disclose your address, physical location, or router make and model; CISA advises against SSIDs that reveal location or manufacturer/model.
- Select a supported security mode. Choose WPA3 Personal if all your devices support it. If older devices need compatibility, choose WPA2/WPA3 Transitional. If neither option is available, WPA2 Personal with AES is a fallback. Avoid WEP, WPA, TKIP, deprecated mixed modes, and open Wi-Fi. Apple’s guidance explains the recommended modes and legacy options to avoid.
- Change the administration password and update firmware. Set a strong, unique password for the router’s administration account; this is separate from the password used to join Wi-Fi. Install firmware updates using the router maker’s or ISP’s current instructions. Google’s security tips advise keeping passwords and firmware current, while CISA recommends changing default passwords.
- Reconnect devices and check the connection. Join phones, computers, and smart-home devices to the new network. If you changed its password or security settings, a device may need to forget the saved network first. For a wired connection, connect a device to a router LAN port. Google Fiber notes that Ethernet provides the fastest connection on its service; this is provider-specific guidance, not a guarantee about every setup. Google Fiber explains how to connect devices to its network.
How do I secure my Wi-Fi router?
Use current encryption and a strong Wi-Fi password
Prefer WPA3 Personal. WPA2/WPA3 Transitional can accommodate older devices while supporting WPA3, and WPA2 Personal with AES is a fallback when the newer modes are unavailable. A strong password is important whichever supported mode you choose. Do not use an open network: without authentication and encryption, outsiders may be able to use the connection or access shared resources. Avoid WEP, WPA, and TKIP, which are older security options. Apple’s recommendations for Wi-Fi routers and access points describe these settings.
Replace default administration credentials
Change the router’s default administrator password to a strong, unique one. This protects access to settings that can affect the whole network; it is not the same credential as the Wi-Fi password. CISA recommends replacing default passwords and using WPA2 or WPA3 at minimum. CISA’s guidance also advises disabling legacy protocols such as WEP and WPA.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Keep firmware up to date
Firmware updates can include security fixes. Check the manufacturer’s app or administration page, or the ISP’s instructions for a provider-supplied device, and install updates as directed. The exact update controls and availability depend on the equipment.
Use guest Wi-Fi for visitors when available
A guest network gives visitors a separate network name and password instead of sharing the main Wi-Fi credentials. Router controls differ: on Google Home or Nest systems, the owner can choose which shared devices guests may use. Google’s guest Wi-Fi instructions describe its platform-specific options.

What should I check if I need to choose a router?
Before buying, confirm that your ISP allows customer-owned equipment and that the router matches your service, subscribed plan, and household needs. Compare the following:
- Service compatibility and ports: Check the connection type and the speed supported by the router’s WAN and LAN ports against your provider’s requirements.
- Security: Look for WPA3 support. WPA2/WPA3 Transitional can help when older devices do not support WPA3.
- Wi-Fi generation and capacity: Consider whether the router can serve your plan and the number and types of devices in your home. A newer Wi-Fi generation by itself does not guarantee better real-world service.
- Coverage and maintenance: Match coverage to your home and check that the manufacturer or ISP continues to provide firmware updates. Coverage depends on the home and equipment; no single generation guarantees a particular result.
Requirements are provider-specific, not universal. For example, Google Fiber recommends Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, or Wi-Fi 7 for customers using their own router. For its 1 Gig plan, it lists 1 Gbps WAN and LAN ports; for its multi-gig plans, it lists a 10 Gbps WAN port and at least 2.5 Gbps LAN. It lists WPA2 as the minimum and WPA3 as preferred. Check Google Fiber’s current own-router requirements if you use that service; do not treat those figures as requirements from other ISPs.
