No—not a conventional fan heater. It heats and circulates air, but that alone does not remove pollutants. Only models designed with an air-purification function and a documented filter system can also clean air. Check the exact model’s official specifications or manual before assuming it filters anything.
How a fan heater differs from an air purifier
A regular fan heater warms air and blows it around the room. Heating and airflow are not evidence of filtration: without a documented cleaning function and a filter through which air passes, the appliance should not be treated as an air purifier.

Filtration can supplement pollutant source control and ventilation, but it does not replace them. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says a portable air cleaner or an upgraded HVAC filter can help improve indoor air quality: EPA guidance on air cleaners and filters.

Filter types and arrangements vary by model. Two manufacturer examples illustrate the distinction; they are not specifications for all fan heaters.

Pre-filter
In Philips’ AMF220/95, a pre-filter captures larger particles such as dust and hair before air reaches the other filter layers. See the Philips AMF220/95 product leaflet.
HEPA filter
The Philips AMF220/95 leaflet describes its HEPA layer as filtering fine particles. Dyson describes the Pure Hot+Cool HP04’s glass HEPA layer as capturing particles; Dyson claims 99.97% capture for allergens and pollutants as small as 0.3 microns. Activated-carbon filter
Philips describes the AMF220/95’s activated-carbon layer as addressing gases and unpleasant odors. Dyson likewise says its sealed system combines a glass HEPA filter and activated carbon. Carbon and HEPA serve different functions, and the presence of one does not establish that a model has the other.

How to check whether your model actually purifies air
- Find the exact model number. Check the appliance label or its manual; a broad description such as “fan heater” is not enough to identify a filter system.
- Look for an explicit purifier function and a filtration path. The official specifications or manual should name the filter media and explain that air passes through them. Philips’ product FAQ explains that an air purifier drives air through a filter to clean pollutants passing through it: Philips air-purifier FAQ.
- Check performance figures in context. For the AMF220/95, Philips lists up to 165 m³/h CADR and a room size up to 42 m² in its product leaflet. These are manufacturer figures for that model, not figures to apply to an ordinary heater or another purifier-heater.
- Confirm which modes filter air. If you need filtration while heating, verify in that exact model’s documentation that purification operates in heat mode; do not infer it from the product name.
- Check filter alerts, replacement timing, and parts. Follow the model’s manual and filter indicator, and verify the replacement part against the exact model before buying.
What filter goes in a fan heater?
For a conventional heater with no documented purifier function, there may be no air-cleaning filter to replace. Do not add a generic filter or assume one will fit. For a purifier-heater, use the replacement specified for its exact model and follow its manual.

For the Philips AMF220, the manufacturer says the filter can last up to 24 months after first use, but qualifies this as a theoretical calculation based on certain usage conditions. It is a conditional estimate for that product, not a general replacement schedule. The Philips product FAQ and model documentation can help identify the appropriate filter; the cited sources do not establish compatibility across brands.

- If you need heat only: choose a heater for its heating function; do not count it as filtration unless its official documentation describes that function.
- If you want cleaner indoor air: consider a dedicated air cleaner or a purpose-built combination appliance with documented filters and performance specifications. Keep source control and ventilation in the picture too.
- If considering a combination model: compare its named filter layers, CADR and room-size claims, whether filtration runs in heat mode, and the exact replacement-filter information.
Availability can change. For example, Midea’s U.S. product page identifies model MSF15AH6LB as a fan, space heater, and air purifier, but says it is no longer available: Midea MSF15AH6LB product page. Check current local availability and specifications rather than assuming a product remains on sale.
