To set up a new HP Windows laptop, complete Windows’ first-run prompts, connect to the internet if your edition requires it, install Windows updates, check HP’s model-specific updates, and back up any files you bring over. Before looking for drivers or firmware, note the laptop’s exact model or product number: HP’s support and compatibility information varies by device.
1. Identify your HP laptop
Find and record the exact model name or product number from the laptop’s label, packaging, or system information. Use it when you visit HP Support for drivers or other device-specific instructions. Do not treat a BIOS update as a routine first step; install one only when HP provides an applicable update and instructions for your model.

2. Complete Windows first-run setup
Turn on the laptop and follow the on-screen prompts for region, keyboard, network, and account setup. Requirements depend on the Windows edition: HP says Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account to complete setup on first use. Other Windows editions can be installed without internet or a Microsoft account. After setup, choose a sign-in method available to you, such as Windows Hello, a security key, or a password. HP’s Windows 11 overview explains the edition-specific requirements and sign-in choices.

4. Check HP updates for your exact model
After Windows Update, use HP’s own update route if it is supported on your laptop. Open the HP app and review Device updates for available software or firmware. HP says the app can include BIOS updates, but it is unavailable in Windows S mode and does not support ARM processors. If you use S mode, rely on Windows Update for updates. For driver packages and compatibility details, enter your exact product number on HP’s driver and software page. HP directs users to Windows Update when a model has not been tested for Windows 11 or HP does not list drivers for it.
Do not install a package intended for a different model, and do not update BIOS without checking HP’s model-specific instructions and the reason for the update.

5. Back up or transfer files
If you are moving from an old computer, preserve your files before wiping, resetting, or giving away that device. HP recommends backing up to external storage, such as an external drive or CD/DVD. Microsoft also documents backing up the Documents, Pictures, and Desktop folders with OneDrive; this cloud option depends on having internet access and sufficient OneDrive space. Choose a destination that suits your files and recovery needs, and confirm that important files are accessible from the backup.
A factory reset erases files from the laptop, so do not use reset as a cleanup step until you have a backup. See HP’s recovery guidance and Microsoft’s OneDrive backup instructions.

6. Check for Windows S mode before installing apps
If a desktop app will not install, check whether Windows is in S mode before assuming the laptop or app is faulty. HP says S mode uses Microsoft Edge and apps from the Microsoft Store; some otherwise compatible apps or accessories may not work or may have limited functionality. HP’s Windows S mode FAQ explains these restrictions and notes that Windows Update is the update route for S mode.
