How to Safely Extract a ZIP File and Check Its Contents for Malware

Verify the sender, scan the ZIP with current antivirus protection, and inspect the extracted files before opening anything. A password or clean scan is not a safety guarantee.

To safely extract an unfamiliar ZIP file, first verify that you expected it and trust its source, then scan it with current antivirus protection. Extract it with an up-to-date built-in or reputable archive tool, inspect the file names and types, and open only the items you expected. A scan, password, familiar sender name, or successful extraction is not proof that the contents are safe.

Can a ZIP file contain a virus?

Yes. A ZIP is a container for files; compression does not make those files harmless. An archive can hold malicious programs or other unexpected content. The important distinction is between extracting files and opening or running them: extraction alone does not mean you should trust every item inside.

Malicious messages can imitate familiar people or legitimate businesses. Microsoft advises against opening unexpected attachments and recommends checking that a downloaded file’s type matches what you expected. See Microsoft’s guidance on how malware can infect a PC and its Attachment Manager guidance.

How to safely extract a ZIP file

  1. Check the source before opening the archive

Ask whether you were expecting the file, whether the sender’s address and message make sense, and whether a download came from the official site you intended to use. If an unexpected message pressures you to act, do not extract the file. Confirm through a separate trusted channel, such as a known phone number or a new message to the sender.

  2. Scan the downloaded ZIP with current protection

Keep your installed antivirus protection enabled and updated, then scan the downloaded archive using that product’s normal file-scanning option. Microsoft recommends updated antivirus protection and identifies Microsoft Defender Antivirus as built into modern Windows versions; see Microsoft’s advice on protecting a PC from unwanted software.

A clean scan reduces risk, but it does not guarantee that every file is harmless. Do not disable antivirus or SmartScreen just to get past a warning, and avoid uploading confidential files to public scanning services unless you understand their privacy terms.

  3. Take Windows download warnings seriously

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Attachment Manager can use download-origin information known as Mark of the Web to warn about or block a file. If the file’s Properties dialog offers an Unblock option, Microsoft Support says: “Only unblock files from trusted sources.” Unblocking removes a barrier; it is not a safety verdict. Do not treat a warning as an obstacle to bypass when you cannot verify the source.

  4. Extract with a built-in or reputable tool

Use an up-to-date tool you trust. Avoid running a self-extracting executable simply because it is presented as an archive; an executable can run code rather than merely unpack files. The fact that an archive extracts without an error only shows that the tool could unpack it, not that its contents are safe.

  5. Inspect the extracted list before opening anything

Compare file names, extensions, and folder structure with what the sender or publisher said to expect. Be cautious if a ZIP that should contain a document, image, or media file instead contains a program, script, shortcut, or installer. Extensions can be misleading, so stop and ask the trusted sender or your IT team if you cannot make sense of an item.

  6. Open only the expected item

Do not run unexpected programs, scripts, shortcuts, or installers, and do not enable macros or other active content just because a requested document asks you to. Keep your operating system and applications updated. If the archive is malformed, unexpected, asks for an unusual password, or contains executable material you did not expect, delete it or report it to IT or security rather than experimenting.

Is a password-protected ZIP safer?

No. Password protection is not evidence that an archive is safe. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide warns that malware is often compressed in password-protected archives that evade antivirus scanning and email filters. Microsoft also explains that Safe Attachments in Microsoft Defender for Office 365 cannot fully scan or detonate a password-protected attachment unless the password is available; its behavior depends on the organization’s plan and policy configuration. That service is an additional email-security layer, not a guarantee for consumer email or a replacement for checking the source. Details are in Microsoft’s Safe Attachments documentation.

Only enter an archive password when you expected the file and have independently verified that the sender and business context are credible. Never enter an account, banking, or unrelated password to unlock a ZIP. If you were not expecting the archive or cannot verify why it is password-protected, do not proceed.

What Windows and Mac warnings do—and do not—tell you

Windows: Attachment Manager and SmartScreen

Windows may warn about or block downloaded files based on their origin, while SmartScreen helps protect against unsafe downloads and sites. Keep these protections on. A warning deserves attention, and an available Unblock control does not prove a file is harmless; use it only when you trust the source and understand the file’s purpose.

macOS: Gatekeeper checks apps, not every ZIP member

Apple describes Gatekeeper as checking software downloaded from the internet, including developer identity and signatures, and by default notarization for apps on macOS Catalina and later. Those checks concern running apps; they do not establish that every arbitrary file inside a ZIP has been inspected or is harmless. Do not use a Gatekeeper override as an archive-scanning method. Apple’s explanation is at Open apps safely on your Mac.

What to do if a ZIP asks you to bypass a warning

Do not turn off antivirus, SmartScreen, or other protections as a routine way to extract or open a file. Stop and verify the archive through a trusted channel. If you cannot establish that the file is expected and its contents make sense, delete it or report it to your organization’s IT or security team. A request to bypass a warning is not a reason to trust the file.
