Windows Update is the best first stop for drivers; download anything it misses from the official support page for your PC or component.
How do I set up a new gaming PC?
- Complete Windows first-run setup. Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account during first-use device setup. Internet access is also needed for Windows updates and some feature downloads. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications.
- Run Windows Update. Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the updates offered. Restart when installation finishes, even if Windows does not explicitly require it. Windows Update installs recommended drivers automatically; optional driver updates need to be selected manually.
- Review applicable optional drivers. Open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates. Expand the driver updates, if shown, and choose only those that match hardware in your PC. Optional drivers are not installed automatically, and an update appearing in the list does not mean every device needs it.
- Check Device Manager. Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Look for unidentified devices or warning icons. If Windows has not installed a needed driver, use the manufacturer’s official support page and match the exact PC or component model and Windows version.
- Review Windows Security. Open Windows Security → Device security to check the security-processor (TPM) and Secure Boot information. Review Core isolation → Memory integrity as well.
- Restart and test the system. Confirm that the display, network, sound, keyboard, mouse, and other attached devices work. If something is missing or malfunctioning, revisit Device Manager and check the relevant manufacturer support page.
Should I install Windows updates before my graphics driver?
Yes: run Windows Update first, restart, and then check whether a graphics driver is still missing or needs attention. This gives Windows the first opportunity to install recommended drivers and system updates. If a driver is still needed, get it from the official support route for the graphics hardware or PC and confirm it supports your exact model and Windows version.

Which drivers do I need to install?
There is no universal driver checklist for gaming PCs. A clean Windows installation may need chipset, graphics, or network drivers, but the right packages depend on the motherboard, graphics hardware, PC model, peripherals, and Windows version. Use Device Manager to identify problems rather than installing every package or utility a vendor offers.
For a prebuilt gaming PC
Start with the PC maker’s official support page. A system manufacturer may provide drivers tailored to a particular model; check its instructions and compatibility details before installing a component-maker alternative.

- AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000 / Ryzen 8000 / Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs
- Power Design: 14+2+2
- Thermals: VRM and M.2 Thermal Guard
- Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 3x M.2 Slots, USB-C, Sensor Panel Link
For a custom-built PC
Use the motherboard maker’s support page for model-specific drivers, such as chipset or network packages, when Windows Update has not supplied what the system needs. For a discrete graphics card, use the relevant official graphics vendor or system-maker support route and verify compatibility. Microsoft’s guidance is to obtain a missing driver from the hardware manufacturer’s site; it does not identify one release as best for every PC. See Microsoft’s driver guidance.
For peripherals and other devices
Install a manufacturer’s driver only when the device needs it or the maker documents a specific feature or compatibility requirement. If the device works and Device Manager shows no issue, do not assume an extra driver or vendor utility is essential.

What should I check in Device Manager?
Device Manager helps reveal hardware Windows has not identified correctly. Look for devices marked as unknown or with a warning icon, then identify the hardware and find its matching driver through the PC or component maker. Microsoft’s general guidance explains how to find and update drivers.

What Windows Security checks matter on a gaming PC?
In Windows Security → Device security, review the security-processor (TPM) and Secure Boot information. Windows 11’s published minimum requirements include TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, and a graphics card compatible with DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver. These are Windows 11 requirements, not a guarantee that a particular PC is configured correctly; consult the Windows 11 requirements for details.
Under Core isolation, review Memory integrity. It requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in UEFI/BIOS. If Windows reports that a driver is incompatible, look for an updated compatible driver from that device’s manufacturer. Do not disable Secure Boot or driver protections as a routine performance tweak: Microsoft describes Secure Boot as protection against boot-time rootkits and warns that turning off Driver Policy reduces security. Microsoft’s Device Security guidance explains these features.

What if something still does not work?
- No network connection: Check Device Manager for a missing network adapter driver. If Windows Update cannot run, use another internet-connected device to obtain the exact driver from the PC or motherboard maker and transfer it if necessary.
- Incorrect resolution or limited display options: Check Device Manager for the graphics adapter and install a compatible driver from the official PC or graphics hardware support page.
- No sound or an unrecognized peripheral: Check Device Manager, confirm the device is connected and enabled, then consult its manufacturer’s support page for a model- and Windows-compatible driver.
- Memory integrity cannot be enabled: Check whether hardware virtualization is enabled in UEFI/BIOS and whether Windows identifies an incompatible driver. Seek a compatible driver from its manufacturer rather than bypassing the protection.
Windows 11’s minimum specifications also list 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage; these are operating-system minimums, not recommendations for a comfortable gaming setup. Microsoft lists the full Windows 11 specifications.
