Use Steam’s current IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews endpoint, pass its returned cursor from page to page, and choose Recent or Updated when you need a chronological traversal that can end naturally. Set the language and review filters deliberately: they define which reviews your dataset contains.
How do I get all Steam reviews?
Steam describes GetAppReviews as a service that “Gets a page of public reviews for an app.” It replaces the older store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 endpoint. The current service URL is https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/; send the endpoint parameters together inside input_json. The service can be called without an API key.

- Choose an app ID and make the population explicit: select a sort filter, review type, purchase type, language scope, and any date or other restrictions.
- For the first request, omit
cursoror set it to*. Setnum_per_pageto a value up to 100; the default is 20. - Check the HTTP status before processing the response. The current service response has no
successfield; handle HTTP 429 as rate limiting. - Process the page’s
reviews, then pass the returnedcursorunchanged as the next request’s cursor. Encode it appropriately when constructing a URL, since cursor strings may contain characters that require URL encoding. - With
RecentorUpdated, continue until the response contains an emptyreviewslist. Store the selected parameters alongside the collected data.
This retrieves the reviews matching the parameters and the endpoint’s available results; it should not be described as every review regardless of language, purchase source, or other filters unless those settings actually include them. Anonymous responses may be cached for up to 10 minutes. Steam says calls without a key associated with the app share a lower rate limit, but its reference does not specify a numeric threshold.

The filter parameter controls ordering, and the choice affects whether an empty page is a useful stopping condition.

For a collection intended to cover the matching set, use Recent or Updated, retain each returned cursor, and stop on an empty reviews list. Keep request failures distinct from that end condition: a failed or rate-limited request is not an empty final page.
Set the review population with filters
Filters are part of the dataset definition, not just presentation options. The service supports review sentiment, purchase source, time boundaries, playtime, hardware, and off-topic controls.

Steam explains that reviews from periods it classifies as off-topic are excluded from score calculations by default in its User Reviews guidance. use_review_qualityapplies only toHelpful. Steam documents low-quality ranking and additional result restrictions when quality ranking is disabled.
For example, “English reviews from Steam purchases” and “all languages from all purchase sources” are different samples. Record the exact choices with exports and analysis so another person can interpret or reproduce the collection.

The service parameter is languages (plural), replacing the older singular language form. It selects the review languages returned. An empty list means English; all requests every language. For a specific language set, supply Steam API language codes as documented in the Steamworks reference. Each returned review also has its own language code.
display_language is separate: it controls the language of review_score_desc and defaults to English. It does not select the reviews in the response.
Neither parameter alone defines how Steam calculates the store review score. Steam Support says the calculation counts Steam-purchased reviews—or all reviews for apps that do not require a purchase—excludes periods designated off-topic by default, and uses reviews in a player’s language when enough are available; otherwise it calculates the score across languages. A collection filtered to one language is therefore not necessarily the same population used for the displayed score.

Know which response fields appear on which pages
The response includes a next-page cursor and total_matching; Helpful queries also include day_range_used. Do not assume aggregate score fields are repeated throughout a paginated export: query_summary score fields are returned only on the first page and only when review_type is All.
Individual reviews include a review ID, author data, review text and language, created and updated timestamps, recommendation polarity, vote data, purchase or free indicators, playtime fields, and other attributes. Preserve fields needed for your analysis rather than relying on the query summary as a substitute for the review records.

Make collection results interpretable
A reusable collection should retain both the records and the query definition. At minimum, record the app ID, endpoint, timestamp of collection, filter, review type, purchase type, language selection, page size, date or playtime constraints, hardware controls, off-topic setting, and quality-ranking setting when applicable. This makes clear whether a finding applies to recent reviews, helpful-ranked reviews in a particular window, one language, or a narrower purchase group.
