Set up a new Windows 11 gaming PC in this order: finish Windows setup and connect to the internet, install Windows updates, add only the missing or newer drivers your hardware needs, check security, set your display correctly, then install games and configure them individually. You do not need to change every firmware option or install a third-party driver utility.
1. Finish Windows setup and connect to the internet
Complete the initial Windows 11 setup, connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and reach the desktop. Internet access is required for first-use setup of Windows 11 Home, which also requires a Microsoft Account; connectivity is needed for updates and some features. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.

2. Install Windows Update updates first
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install what is offered, and restart when prompted. Check again after restarting and repeat if more updates appear. Microsoft says Windows 11 installs recommended drivers through Windows Update and lets users install optional driver updates manually when available: Automatically get recommended and updated hardware drivers.
Recommended drivers and optional drivers are different
Windows Update installs recommended drivers automatically. Optional driver updates are not installed automatically; to review them, go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, then expand Driver updates if that category appears. Install an optional driver when it addresses a missing device, a specific hardware problem, or a recommendation from the PC or component maker. There is no need to install every optional driver simply because it is listed.

Check whether a device still needs a driver
After updating Windows, open Device Manager and look for devices marked with a warning icon or listed as unknown. If a device is not working or needs a newer driver, get it from the PC builder or the component maker’s official support page, matching the exact model and Windows version. Microsoft recommends Windows Update or the vendor’s official page, not generic driver-download sites: The Windows Driver Policy.
Microsoft’s driver policy says new drivers must be submitted and signed through the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP). An April 2026 security update changed the default trust for drivers signed through an expired cross-signed program, so an older driver or legacy installation path may not work as expected. If Windows blocks a driver, check for a current version from Windows Update or the hardware or software vendor rather than bypassing the security check.
3. Install graphics software only after Windows updates finish
Windows may provide a working graphics driver, but you can install a current driver from the graphics-card maker when needed or when you want its supported software features. Use the support page for the exact GPU or prebuilt PC model; installation steps and available tools differ by manufacturer.

AMD graphics cards
AMD provides automatic driver detection and manual product selection on its official drivers and support page. Complete pending Windows updates first: AMD notes that an active Windows Update can prevent its installer from proceeding. Its installer offers three software choices, which affect the included interface and controls, not a stated tier of gaming performance:
| AMD installation choice | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Default | All AMD Software features and controls. |
| Minimal | Basic controls; omits advanced functions such as performance tweaking and recording or capture. |
| Driver Only | The driver without the AMD Software user interface. |
Choose based on whether you want AMD’s software controls. Do not interpret these options as a promise of different frame rates.
4. Check Windows security without changing settings blindly
Open Windows Security and review Device security. Windows 11 requires Secure Boot capability and TPM 2.0; those requirements do not mean every PC needs a manual firmware change. Microsoft recommends Secure Boot for stronger protection. If a needed feature is unavailable, consult the PC or motherboard maker’s documentation for the exact model rather than following generic BIOS instructions. See Windows 11 system requirements and Microsoft’s Secure Boot guidance.

Memory integrity and virtualization
Memory integrity is a Windows Security feature that requires hardware virtualization to be enabled in UEFI/BIOS. If you want to use it and Windows reports that it is unavailable, check the PC maker’s instructions for the relevant firmware setting. If Windows identifies an incompatible driver, ask its hardware vendor for a compatible update; do not remove a driver you rely on without understanding what device or function it supports. Microsoft explains the feature and compatibility checks in its Memory integrity guidance.

5. Set the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate
Open Settings > System > Display and choose the display’s supported resolution. To select its refresh rate, go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and choose a rate the connected display offers. Available choices depend on the monitor, connection, graphics hardware, and driver; do not select a mode the display does not support.
Use HDR only with compatible equipment
If both the display and PC support HDR, open Settings > System > Display > HDR to review the option. Microsoft recommends current graphics drivers for HDR. Its setup guidance covers supported displays, requirements, and adjustment: HDR settings in Windows.

Windowed-game optimizations
For compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games played windowed or borderless, Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations can enable modern presentation features, including Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings and review Optimizations for windowed games. Availability depends on the game and hardware. Restart the game after changing the setting. Details: Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11.
6. Install games and tune them one at a time
Install the game launchers and games you plan to use, then configure graphics and input settings inside each game. Start with the game’s supported resolution and refresh-rate options, then adjust quality settings to suit your preference for image detail, responsiveness, or frame rate. There is no universal settings checklist that guarantees the best performance across different PCs and games; compare changes in the specific game rather than assuming a setting will improve every system.

Microsoft announced the Windows 11 2026 Update, version 26H2, on September 29, 2026. It is being offered through a controlled rollout to eligible devices running versions 24H2 and 25H2, and safeguards can delay availability on some devices. Check Settings > Windows Update; a new PC will not necessarily receive the offer immediately. Do not try to force an update that Windows Update has not offered for the device. See Microsoft’s 26H2 announcement.
Quick Recap
What to avoid during setup
- Do not install third-party driver utilities as a substitute for Windows Update or official manufacturer support.
- Do not change unrelated BIOS or UEFI options based on a generic gaming checklist. Firmware labels and safe settings vary by board and PC maker.
- Do not treat every optional driver or graphics-software feature as mandatory.
- Do not assume a claimed performance uplift applies to your system; measure changes in the game you play.
