The exact menus, controller needs, and who can join vary by game, platform, and mode, so treat the steps below as a checklist rather than universal button presses.
Choose how the group will connect
First decide whether everyone will share one console, use separate consoles nearby, or play over the internet. These are different arrangements; a game may offer some but not all of them.

- Same-console play: Players share one system and screen. Check how many local players the game supports and whether each person needs a compatible controller.
- Local wireless: Nearby systems connect wirelessly if the game provides that mode.
- Wired LAN: Separate consoles connect through a shared router, typically using Ethernet. This is not the same as ordinary online play.
- Online play: Players connect over the internet and join a friend’s room or lobby, or use another option the game supports.
For example, Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe LAN instructions require the consoles to connect to the same router over a wired connection. Its separate local and online multiplayer instructions cover different ways to play. Choose the option that matches both your group’s equipment and the game’s menu.
Check access, compatibility, and capacity
Before inviting everyone, confirm that each player has access to the same game and can enter the selected mode. If players are on different platforms, check that the game supports cross-play for that mode and that it is enabled where required. Platform compatibility can also affect the room size.

Limits are game- and platform-specific, not a general racing-game standard. Nintendo says Mario Kart 8 Deluxe LAN supports up to 12 players. The Gran Turismo 7 online manual lists multiplayer for up to four players, or up to two players on a PlayStation 4 console. Check the game’s current instructions for your platform before planning around a cap.
For a shared Nintendo Switch console, Nintendo lists Joy-Con or a compatible Switch Pro Controller for two players. Wired LAN is a separate setup: Nintendo lists Ethernet cables, a suitable dock, and a wired router; a network switch may be needed if the router does not have enough ports. These LAN components are not requirements for ordinary online play.

Find one another and create a lobby
- Add or locate friends. Use the game’s friend list or the relevant platform’s network. Make sure the people you want to invite appear online if the game requires that.
- Choose a host. One player should open the multiplayer mode and create a room or lobby. In many games, that player also sets the race options.
- Invite or join. Send an in-game invitation, join a visible friend’s room, or use another method the game provides. Follow the game’s own directions for whether the host needs to approve entrants.
- Confirm the group is assembled. Have the host check that everyone intended to race appears in the lobby before starting.
In Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online flow, Player 1 creates the room and chooses race or battle settings. Friends find the host under Friends and join; the host confirms once they are in the lobby. The game’s exact menu labels may differ from other titles.
For EA games that support EA Connect, EA’s instructions for using EA Connect say to open Friends, select an online friend, and choose “Invite to lobby.” An invited player can choose “Join lobby.” EA notes that not every game has every EA Connect feature. An invitation may not work if either player has cross-play disabled or the selected mode does not support it.

Set the race options and start
Once the group is in the room, the host should select the available format and settings. Depending on the game, that may include race versus battle, teams, item rules, and the number of races. Players can then choose characters, vehicles, or courses if the game offers those choices. In the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe examples, the host sets the race or battle options and players choose characters, karts, and preferred courses before the match begins.
