To set up a Meta Quest 3, prepare a Meta account and mobile device, charge the headset, connect it to Wi-Fi, install any software update, pair the Meta mobile app, and map a safe play boundary. Then use First Steps to learn the controls and browse the Meta Horizon Store for more apps.
What you need before setup
- A Meta account.
- A phone or tablet with the Meta mobile app installed and signed in. The CDC OneLab VR setup guide includes a mobile device in its instructions; check current Meta support guidance if you do not have one, because the guide does not establish that every current setup route requires a phone.
- A Wi-Fi connection.
- A charged Quest 3 headset and AA batteries in both controllers. The CDC guide says the headset charging cord and controller batteries are included, so its setup sequence does not require buying a separate cable or batteries.
- An open area where you can move safely, or a place to play seated or stationary.
Set up your account, Wi-Fi, and headset
- Create or sign in to your Meta account. Install the Meta mobile app on your phone or tablet and sign in.
- Charge and power on the headset. Confirm that the controllers have AA batteries, then turn on the Quest 3.
- Connect the headset to Wi-Fi. In the headset, open Quick Settings from the taskbar and follow the on-screen network prompts.
- Accept the license agreement and install the update. Let the headset complete its software update before moving on.
- Pair the headset in the mobile app. The CDC OneLab guide describes this route: open the app, choose Menu > Devices, select the headset, and follow the prompts. If automatic pairing does not finish, enter the PIN displayed in the headset. App labels and setup screens can change, so follow the current on-screen instructions or Meta support guidance if they differ.
Choose a boundary for your room
Before putting on the headset, clear the floor and move furniture, pets, cables, and other hazards out of the area. The boundary is a visual aid, not a substitute for preparing a safe space.

During boundary setup, map the unobstructed floor area around you. The system creates a rectangular play area inside the perimeter. As you or a controller approach its edge, wall and floor markers appear; passthrough can also fade in to show the physical surroundings.

Try your first app and find more
Start with First Steps, which the CDC OneLab guide recommends for practicing with the controllers, navigation, and introductory tips. As the guide puts it: “Try Meta’s First Steps app to get some practice using the controllers, navigation, and other tips.”
