For a local weather setup, Home Assistant’s built-in Ecowitt integration is the most direct option: add the integration, then configure your station gateway to push readings to the callback address Home Assistant displays. The station and Home Assistant need a working network route, and Ecowitt uploads use HTTP rather than HTTPS. If you have a WeatherFlow Tempest-compatible station, Home Assistant also offers a separate local integration that reads UDP broadcasts.
Choose the right local connection
The best setup depends on the station you own and whether you want readings to travel only across your home network. Home Assistant’s Ecowitt integration uses Local Push: the station sends data to a callback on Home Assistant. WeatherFlow’s integration reads directly from a Tempest-compatible device over UDP. Ambient Weather’s named integration instead retrieves data through Ambient Weather Cloud.

| Option | Data route | Key requirement | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ecowitt integration | Station pushes readings to Home Assistant over the local network | Supported Ecowitt gateway and sensors, plus a reachable HTTP endpoint | New setup or existing Ecowitt hardware |
| WeatherFlow integration | Home Assistant reads local UDP broadcasts | Tempest-compatible station and Home Assistant on the same subnet | Existing or planned WeatherFlow Tempest setup |
| Ambient Weather integration | Ambient Weather Cloud | Application Key and API Key from the Ambient Weather dashboard | Ambient Weather users who are comfortable with cloud delivery |
| ecowitt2mqtt in Ambient Weather mode | Locally oriented MQTT route; supports MQTT Discovery | MQTT setup and project-specific configuration | Ambient Weather users seeking a local route |
Home Assistant documents the Ecowitt hardware and upload process in its Ecowitt integration guide. Its WeatherFlow integration guide explains the same-subnet UDP requirement, while the Ambient Weather integration guide describes the cloud-based route and ecowitt2mqtt alternative.
What you need for the Ecowitt setup
Home Assistant’s current Ecowitt documentation lists GW1200, GW2000 and GW3000 gateways. It also lists sensor examples including the WH51 soil-moisture sensor, WH40 self-emptying rain gauge, WH57 outdoor lightning detector and WS90 7-in-1 sensor. The entities Home Assistant can create depend on the sensors paired with your station.

- AUTHENTIC HYPER-LOCAL DATA: Monitor your actual home and backyard weather conditions with our wireless and Wi-Fi-enabled sensor array measuring wind speed/direction, temperature, humidity, rainfall, UV intensity, and solar radiation
- SMART HOME READY: Set up alerts, access your data remotely, and program your home based on weather conditions using IFTT, Google Home, Alexa, and more
- ENHANCED WIFI: Enables your station to transmit its data wirelessly to the world's largest personal weather station network (optional setting)
- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: Connect to Ambient Weather Network to customize your dashboard tiles, share hyperlocal weather conditions via social feeds and create your own forecasts (coming soon)
- Make sure the sensors are paired and reporting to the station.
- Connect the gateway to the same reachable home network as Home Assistant, over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Have a network path that lets the gateway reach Home Assistant using HTTP.
You can configure the gateway’s network connection through the Ecowitt app, which requires an Ecowitt account, or through its embedded web interface. For the latter, connect to the device’s Wi-Fi hotspot and open 192.168.4.1 in a browser; Home Assistant’s documentation says this method does not require an account.
Add Ecowitt to Home Assistant and configure uploads
First add the integration in Home Assistant. It will display the callback details the station needs: a server IP address or host name, a path and a port. Enter those same values in the station’s customized weather-service upload settings, selecting the Ecowitt protocol.

- In Home Assistant, open Settings > Devices & services > Add Integration, search for Ecowitt and follow the prompts.
- Note the server or host, path and port shown by the integration. Keep the path exactly as displayed unless the app-specific instruction below requires removing its leading slash.
- In the Ecowitt mobile app, open the device’s DIY Upload Servers, choose Customized, select Ecowitt as the protocol type, then enter the displayed host, path and port. The app prepends a slash to the path, so remove the first slash when entering the path there.
- Alternatively, open the station’s web interface and go to Weather Services > Customized. Enable the customized service, select the Ecowitt protocol, and enter the callback host, path and port.
- Save the station settings and allow it to send data to Home Assistant.

Home Assistant states: “Ecowitt devices do not support TLS/SSL connections (HTTPS).” The station’s upload therefore needs an HTTP endpoint it can reach; an endpoint available only over HTTPS will not work for this documented setup. If your Home Assistant instance normally sits behind TLS, arrange a local route or reverse proxy that accepts HTTP for the station upload as well as HTTPS for other access. The weather-station upload itself is not encrypted in transit.

When another integration is a better fit
WeatherFlow Tempest: local UDP
Choose the WeatherFlow integration when you have a Tempest-compatible station and Home Assistant can share its subnet. The integration reads local UDP broadcasts directly rather than relying on the Ambient Weather Cloud route. Values in the integration may differ slightly from the WeatherFlow app: the app takes forecasts and readings from nearby stations into account, while Home Assistant reads the local device data.
Ambient Weather: cloud integration or MQTT route
Home Assistant’s named Ambient Weather integration retrieves data through Ambient Weather Cloud and requires an Application Key and API Key from the Ambient Weather dashboard. If you want a local route with Ambient Weather equipment, Home Assistant identifies ecowitt2mqtt in ambient_weather mode as an alternative; it uses MQTT and supports MQTT Discovery, so it adds an MQTT component and its own configuration.

Check hardware before buying
A supported gateway is not necessarily a complete weather station. If you are shopping for an Ecowitt setup, check that the exact package includes the sensors you need and that those sensors are compatible with the gateway. Home Assistant’s current list includes the GW2000 as a supported gateway, but compatibility of a gateway alone does not establish that a bundle contains the required outdoor sensors.
Home Assistant’s current Ecowitt page also reports that the integration was introduced in Home Assistant 2022.9 and is used by 2.8% of active installations. That percentage is Home Assistant’s published adoption figure, not an independent count or a measure of sensor accuracy.
