How to Set Up a Linksys Wireless Router Without a CD

A Linksys setup CD is not required for many models. Connect to the router, open its local setup page, and follow the wizard; check your model’s guide for exact defaults.

You can set up many Linksys routers without an installation CD by connecting to the router and using its browser-based setup wizard. The exact screens and defaults depend on the model, so check the label for the model number and use its matching Linksys instructions.

What you need before setup

  • Your Linksys router and its power adapter.
  • A modem with an active internet connection.
  • A computer or phone to open the setup page.
  • The Wi-Fi name and password printed on the router label, unless you plan to connect the computer to a LAN port with Ethernet.

An Ethernet cable is optional. Use one only if you prefer a wired connection between the setup computer and the router; it is not required for wireless setup.

Set up the router through a browser

  1. Connect the modem. If replacing an old router, disconnect it from the modem and restart the modem. Connect the modem to the Linksys router’s Internet port, then power on the router. Follow Linksys Smart WiFi setup instructions or the guide for your model.
  2. Wait for the router to be ready. Check the indicator light using the instructions for your model. Some Smart WiFi routers finish coming online after you start the setup wizard.
  3. Connect your setup device. Join the default Wi-Fi network using the name and password on the router’s label. Alternatively, connect a computer to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable. Linksys’ EA-series guide documents these connection options.
  4. Open the setup page. In a browser, go to http://192.168.1.1 or http://myrouter.local, as supported by the cited Smart WiFi and EA-series guides. If the router’s address was changed previously, use its current address. Linksys’ web-interface guide has additional access instructions.
  5. Complete the wizard. Follow the prompts to detect the internet connection, choose a Wi-Fi name and password, and create the router administrator password. If prompted, reconnect your device to the new Wi-Fi network to continue.
  6. Save the credentials. Record the new Wi-Fi and administrator passwords somewhere secure. They are different credentials: the Wi-Fi password connects devices to the network, while the administrator password protects router settings.

Linksys says in its Smart WiFi setup guide that “Setup via the Linksys app is no longer supported.” That statement applies to that guide; use the instructions for your specific product rather than assuming every Linksys model has the same setup options. Linksys Smart WiFi setup guide.

Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet for setup

Connection method How to connect Best when
Default Wi-Fi Join the network using the credentials printed on the router label. You want to set up without a cable and can access the router’s default network.
Ethernet Connect the setup computer to a router LAN port. You prefer a wired connection or cannot use the default Wi-Fi.

If the setup page does not open

  • Confirm the connection. Make sure the computer or phone is connected to the Linksys router’s default Wi-Fi, or that the computer’s cable is connected to a LAN port—not the Internet port.
  • Try the other supported address. For the Smart WiFi and EA-series guides cited above, try 192.168.1.1 and myrouter.local. If someone changed the router’s address, those defaults may not reach it.
  • Check the model-specific guide. Linksys has separate setup directions for Smart WiFi, EA-series, dual-band, mesh, and other families. Find the model number on the router label and use the corresponding Linksys support page for the correct address, light meanings, and steps.
  • Handle an administrator-password prompt carefully. Linksys’ web-interface guide says an unconfigured router uses admin as the default administrator password. This may not work on a previously configured router or another product family.
  • Reset only if needed. If the router was configured before and no administrator password works, Linksys says a physical factory reset is required before setting it up again. A reset can erase existing settings; check the exact model’s reset instructions before proceeding.

Why the model number matters

Router addresses, prompts, default credentials, indicator lights, and reset procedures can differ across Linksys product families. Identify the exact model from its label before relying on model-specific steps. The browser-based setup path documented for Smart WiFi and EA-series routers is a useful guide, not a guarantee that every Linksys router behaves identically.
