How Giorgi Kobaidze Turned His GitHub Profile Into a Cyberpunk Console

Giorgi Kobaidze’s project turns contribution activity into an isometric city and assembles a cyberpunk GitHub profile from aligned SVG slices refreshed by automation.

Giorgi Kobaidze’s cyberpunk GitHub profile is assembled from 23 SVG image slices and an automated pipeline that turns contribution activity into an isometric city. His account, published October 1, 2026, is a project breakdown rather than a tested, plug-and-play tutorial: it explains the visual architecture, the data flow, and the choices that keep the display coherent.

What the profile README can—and cannot—do

A GitHub profile README appears when a public repository has the same name as the account and contains a nonempty README.md at its root. GitHub documents the eligibility and setup in its profile README guide.

Kobaidze describes the README rendering environment as restrictive: scripts, style blocks, and inline style attributes are stripped. His approach is to render the visual effects into SVG images and embed those images in the README. In his account, the images support effects such as a blinking cursor and glitch styling, but the image context does not provide external resources, hover behavior, or interactions inside the image. He also notes that GitHub’s image caching can delay the appearance of updates.

How 23 SVG slices become one console

Rather than create one oversized graphic, Kobaidze divides the interface into 23 SVG files and places them in sequence. The individual slices are designed to look like a single window by assigning shared edges consistently:

  • The printed ones are dye-sublimation.The dark keys are all five sided over dye-sublimation
  • Cherry profile is similar to OEM profile and it's lower than OEM profile
  • This keycaps is made of PBT.The thickness is around 1.4-1.55mm.The injection point is on the corner back of the keycaps. This is not defects.
  • Compatible with ANSI Mx mechanical keyboard 61 64 68 75 84 87 96 104 108 layout whose space is 6.25u,namely 11.7cm
  • The header draws the top border and title bar; the footer draws the bottom border.
  • Intermediate slices carry the side rails, so the frame appears to continue down the page.
  • Elements align to a 40-pixel grid, and the glow extends beyond slice edges to conceal visual seams.
  • Image alignment uses align="top" to prevent the small inline-image gap that could otherwise interrupt the stack.

This is a compositing solution to the README’s limited rendering options: each image is static, while the sequence, repeated rails, shared grid, and overlapping glow create the impression of one continuous interface.

How contribution activity becomes a city

The city maps GitHub’s contribution calendar into 53 week-columns by 7 day-rows. Each nonzero day becomes a building; a zero-count day stays an empty lot. That keeps the calendar’s structure visible while turning activity into a skyline.

Isometric buildings, drawn in depth order

Each building has a roof and two visible walls. The renderer draws buildings back to front using a painter’s algorithm, so nearer shapes can cover those behind them in the intended order. A seeded random generator makes window placement stable when the data and seed remain unchanged; otherwise, the same city could acquire a different window pattern on each render.

Why the height scale uses a square root

Kobaidze’s height rule is h = 8 + 110 * sqrt(c / c_max), where c is the day’s contribution count and c_max is the maximum count in the displayed data. The square root raises low-count days relative to a linear scale, making them easier to see without allowing the busiest day to grow proportionally and dominate the skyline.

The article’s example uses a busiest day of 43 contributions. Its displayed heights compare the two scales as follows; these are outputs from the author’s example, not performance measurements:

Daily contributions Linear height Square-root height
1 11 px 25 px
10 34 px 61 px
43 118 px 118 px

Choosing the color: contribution-graph green or neon blue?

Kobaidze rendered both green and blue versions. Green echoes the familiar contribution graph, making the activity encoding immediately recognizable. Blue fit the neon palette of this particular profile more closely. The choice is a design trade-off between a conventional activity cue and consistency with the rest of the console—not a result from a reader study.

How the update pipeline works

The project account describes four stages: retrieve data, render SVG assets, update designated README sections, and commit only if generated content has changed. That last condition avoids creating a commit when a run produces no file differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fetch: fetch.py obtains GitHub and DEV data and writes JSON.
  2. Render: render.py turns the collected data into SVG images.
  3. Update: readme.py replaces marked sections of the README with generated content.
  4. Commit: the workflow commits only when generated files differ.

The article’s example GitHub Actions workflow uses Python 3.12, actions/checkout@v5, and actions/setup-python@v6. Its scheduled run is shown at 12:17 in the America/New_York time zone. These are the versions and schedule in that October 1, 2026 project account, not a guarantee that the same configuration remains current or is running now.

Which data it fetches, and what requires credentials

GitHub account and contribution data

Kobaidze says the GitHub GraphQL queries collect follower and pull-request totals, owned public repositories, stars, forks, language sizes, contribution years, and contribution calendars. Because the contribution calendar is queried one year at a time, the implementation uses aliases to request multiple years in the same query.

DEV Community data

For DEV, the article identifies the Forem API. It distinguishes public article, reaction, and comment totals from private article views and follower counts, which it says require an API key.

Partial fetch failures and retained values

The two services are fetched independently. If one fetch fails, the author says the pipeline keeps that source’s prior JSON values rather than replacing them with empty data. In that design, a profile can display values that are one day old instead of going blank. This is the author’s stated fallback behavior, not an independently tested guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Credentials and scope in the author’s setup

Kobaidze describes storing GitHub and DEV credentials as GitHub Actions secrets. He says the fine-grained GitHub token was read-only and had Metadata and Contents permissions. That documents the configuration used for this project; it should not be treated as universal guidance that those permissions are sufficient for every API query or future GitHub configuration.

What this project demonstrates

The central design move is to treat the README as a display surface rather than an application runtime: pre-render the interface as SVG, split it into aligned image slices, and refresh generated assets through automation. The city adds a visual encoding on top of the familiar contribution calendar, with empty lots preserving zero-activity days and square-root scaling giving quiet days more visual weight. Kobaidze recounts his reaction to the idea: “Are you kidding me? This is so cool! I’m building it right now. I don’t care how tired I am.”
