Complete Windows’ first-start setup
- Power on the laptop. Follow the prompts shown on screen. Lenovo’s general Windows setup guidance includes choosing language-related settings, creating or signing in to a user account, and connecting to a wireless network.
- Choose an account. Lenovo’s guidance says Windows personal-use initial setup requires an existing Microsoft account or a new one. It also says a local account can be selected after initial setup. Screens and requirements can vary with Windows version, edition, region, and subsequent Windows changes.
- Connect to the internet. Microsoft says internet access is required to finish setting up a Windows Home or Pro device. Select a trusted Wi-Fi network and enter its password, then continue through the remaining on-screen prompts.
Microsoft’s guidance for internet connection during Windows setup applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11: Get connected when setting up your Windows device. A wired connection is an option only if your specific laptop has an Ethernet port or you have a compatible adapter.

If Wi-Fi does not work during setup
Use what Windows shows to choose the right fix. A network that appears but will not connect is different from a setup screen that lists no networks at all.
A network appears, but the laptop will not connect
- Check that you selected the right network and entered its password correctly.
- Make sure the router is broadcasting its network name, and move closer to improve the signal.
- If needed, restart the router and try again.
- Try another trusted Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. A hotspot may use mobile data.
No networks appear
First check that Wi-Fi is enabled and that the laptop is within range of a network. If Windows indicates a Wi-Fi adapter driver problem, Microsoft documents a recovery method: on another device, download the Wi-Fi driver for your exact laptop from Lenovo Support, copy it to a USB flash drive, and load it during setup. This procedure is for the specific case where no networks are listed and setup reports a driver problem; it is not a routine step for every new laptop. Avoid driver downloads from unofficial sites. See Microsoft’s connection and driver instructions.

After reaching the Windows desktop, connect to the internet and open Settings > Windows Update. Check for available updates, install them, and restart when Windows requests it. Lenovo says updates applicable to the installed Windows version download automatically when online, and recommends using Windows Update rather than other sources because they may carry security risks. See Lenovo’s official support resources for the applicable documentation.

Some IdeaPad Slim 3 series devices may include Lenovo Vantage, Lenovo PC Manager, or Lenovo Smart Engine; availability and features are not uniform across models. Lenovo describes these utilities as offering device or system status and settings. Vantage can check for and perform system updates, while PC Manager may handle driver updates. If one is already on your laptop, use its available features or consult official Lenovo support for your exact model. You do not need to assume that every Slim 3i includes these apps or install them to complete first-time Windows setup.
