Hexfield Deck turns a structured Markdown planner into an interactive task board: the file remains the source of truth, and board edits are written back to it. That makes it a natural fit for people who want Kanban views without moving their planning into a separate database. The documented setup is for VS Code; whether an Obsidian plugin is currently released is unclear.
What Hexfield Deck does
Hexfield Deck is a project by Jim Lindblom. Its repository describes it as a “Markdown-powered kanban task board for VS Code and Obsidian,” but the detailed installation and usage documentation covers a VS Code extension. It reads planner files, displays their tasks as cards, and writes board actions back into the Markdown.
The standard board groups tasks into To Do, In Progress, and Done columns. A swimlane view instead organizes tasks into rows, with status columns within each row. You can move cards between statuses or rows; those changes update the file, and the board refreshes as the Markdown changes. The board also provides a way to open a task at its source line in the editor.
How the planner Markdown is structured
A planner uses YAML frontmatter and task headings and checkboxes. The quick-start example includes a type: hexfield-planner field, week and year values, and tags. Checkbox markers represent task status:

Tasks can include optional inline details, such as project tags, bracketed ISO-style due dates, priority marks (!!!, !!, or !), estimates such as est:2h, and // comments. These let the board work with more than a task’s name and status.
The documented structure uses H1 headings for named Slates and H2 headings for Rows or swimlanes. H3 and lower headings do not define board structure. If a file has no H1, the implementation plan says it is parsed as one implicit Slate, which supports older-format files. The guide’s examples include day rows and backlog sections.

Board features beyond drag and drop
The guide documents task search, quick-add, subtasks, sorting, progress display, context-menu edits, and filters for project, status, priority, due date, and estimate. It also describes jumping from a card to the corresponding line in the editor. Won’t Do and Blocked cards are hidden by default under the guide’s filter behavior, so check the filters if a task seems to be missing.
Install and open it in VS Code
The repository documents two installation routes: install a VSIX from Releases, or build and package the project from source. Once installed, open a planner Markdown file and run Hexfield Deck: Open Board.

- Or build from source: follow the repository’s build and packaging instructions.
- Open a planner: open the Markdown file in VS Code, then run Hexfield Deck: Open Board.
Release information is inconsistent across the project’s materials: the repository feature list identifies v0.7.0, while the user guide includes a v0.8.0 version-history entry. These do not establish which release is latest today. Check Releases for the version currently available. The sources also do not confirm a VS Code Marketplace listing.
What to know about Obsidian availability
The repository’s introductory copy mentions Obsidian, but it also labels the Obsidian plugin “Coming Soon,” and the implementation plan describes it as a future phase. The available documentation therefore does not establish that an Obsidian plugin can currently be installed. The VS Code workflow is the clearly documented option.

When Hexfield Deck may fit
Hexfield Deck makes sense if you want tasks kept in Markdown while using a visual board to organize, search, filter, and update them. The file-based approach gives you an editable text planner alongside the board, while the board provides Kanban columns and swimlanes. It is less suited to someone looking for a confirmed, ready-to-install Obsidian plugin or a documented standalone hosted service: neither is established by the available project materials.
