How to set up a Kobo eReader and customize its reading settings

Charge your Kobo, connect it to Wi‑Fi, sign in, update it, and use the Reading Menu to personalize fonts, layout, brightness, and optional custom fonts.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The quickest supported route is to charge the Kobo eReader for at least one hour, turn it on, join a Wi‑Fi network, sign in to (or create) a Kobo account, install any offered update, and open a book. While reading, tap the middle of the page to open the Reading Menu, where you can change the font, type size, line spacing, margins, and justification. Swipe along the left edge to adjust brightness on models with a built-in light. If Wi‑Fi setup is not possible, Kobo Desktop can configure some models in some regions, but its current support excludes Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour, Kobo Clara BW, and customers in Europe.

What you need before starting

Set up is easier when the reader, network, account details, and cable are ready before you begin. Gather these items:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The eReader and its charger: Kobo recommends charging for at least one hour before first use. A low battery during an update can interrupt the process.
  • A usable Wi‑Fi network: Have the network name and password available. Passwords are case-sensitive, and a hidden network may need to be added manually.
  • A Kobo account: You can sign in to an existing account or create one during setup. Books associated with that account appear on the eReader as they are added and synchronized.
  • A compatible USB cable and computer, if necessary: The connector differs between device generations. Use a cable that fits your model rather than assuming that an older Micro USB cable is correct.

Keep the reader near the router for the first connection. If you intend to use a computer instead of Wi‑Fi, check the model and region limitations in the computer-setup section before installing or relying on Kobo Desktop.

Set up a Kobo eReader over Wi‑Fi

Wi‑Fi is Kobo’s general setup route for compatible eReaders. The labels can vary slightly by model or software version, but the sequence is the same.

  1. Charge the reader. Leave it charging for at least one hour before turning it on for the first setup.
  2. Power it on. Hold the power button until the screen starts and wait for the setup screen.
  3. Choose your language. Select the language you want the menus and setup prompts to use.
  4. Choose Wi‑Fi setup. Select the option to configure the eReader over a wireless network.
  5. Select your network. Tap the network name shown in the list. If it does not appear, move closer to the router and rescan. A hidden network can be added manually when that option is offered.
  6. Enter the password. Match capitalization exactly. Check carefully for characters that look alike, especially the number zero and the letter O.
  7. Set the date, time, or time zone if prompted. Choose the location information requested by the setup screen and continue.
  8. Allow the software update to finish. Kobo says available updates may take up to 20 minutes. Keep the reader connected to power and Wi‑Fi while the download and installation run.
  9. Sign in or create an account. Enter the Kobo account credentials, or follow the account-creation prompts. Once authentication and syncing finish, the books attached to the account can appear on the device.

Do not power off the reader simply because the screen appears unchanged during an update. E Ink screens can retain an earlier image while work continues. Wait for the device to report completion or return to the normal home screen before disconnecting it from power or network access.

What to expect after account sign-in

Account sign-in connects the device to your Kobo library. The exact number of books and the time required to display them depend on the library and connection, so the first synchronization may take longer than later ones. If a title does not appear immediately, leave the reader connected and allow synchronization to complete before troubleshooting the account.

Use a computer when Wi‑Fi is not an option

Kobo documents a no-Wi‑Fi setup through the Kobo Desktop application, but this is not a universal fallback. The current Kobo Desktop guidance says it is not compatible with Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour, or Kobo Clara BW, and it does not work for customers in Europe. For any other model, confirm that the current Desktop instructions support your device and location before choosing this route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Computer-setup procedure for supported combinations

  1. Install and open Kobo Desktop on the computer.
  2. Sign in to Kobo Desktop with the account you intend to use on the eReader.
  3. On the eReader, choose the setup option that indicates you do not have Wi‑Fi.
  4. Connect the eReader to the computer with a USB cable that matches its connector.
  5. Wait while the computer configures the reader and synchronization completes. Do not pull the cable while this is in progress.
  6. Use the computer’s eject function, then disconnect the cable only after the reader is safely ejected.

Older Kobo setup instructions describe a Micro USB cable for the computer flow. That detail should not be treated as a requirement for every generation: newer hardware may use another connector. The physical fit of the cable and the instructions for your exact model take priority.

Setup route What it requires Important limits Best use
Wi‑Fi A charged eReader, nearby network, network password, and Kobo account Cannot proceed until the reader can join a supported network Normal first-time setup and updates
Kobo Desktop Supported model and region, computer, Desktop application, account, and matching USB cable Current guidance excludes Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour, Kobo Clara BW, and customers in Europe A documented alternative when Wi‑Fi is unavailable

Open a book and find the Reading Menu

After setup, open any supported ebook from the Home or Library screen. Tap the center of the page once while the text is visible. This opens the Reading Menu, which contains the controls for text appearance and, on models with a screen light, access to brightness controls.

  • 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗕𝗬 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 - Made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection.

Tap outside the menu or return to the page when you want to continue reading. The settings you choose are stored by the eReader and applied to other books that support the same text controls, so you do not have to repeat the adjustment for every title.

Customize font and page appearance

The Reading Menu’s font controls let you make the page easier to read without changing the book file itself. Kobo documents these adjustable options:

Control What it changes How to choose a useful starting point
Font face The typeface used for supported ebook text Start with the face whose letter shapes are easiest to distinguish, especially at small sizes.
Font size How large the characters appear Increase it until you can read without leaning toward the screen; reduce it if frequent page turns become distracting.
Line spacing The vertical distance between lines Add spacing if lines run together, or reduce it when the page feels too loose.
Margins The blank space at the left and right edges of the text block Use narrower margins for more words per page or wider margins if the text feels crowded near the bezel.
Justification Whether lines align to one side or to both sides of the text block Compare the available alignment choices and keep the one that produces the most comfortable word spacing.

There is no Kobo-prescribed universal font size, spacing value, margin width, or justification. Comfort depends on eyesight, lighting, reading distance, language, and the book’s design. Change one control at a time, read several pages, and then decide whether the change helped. This avoids compensating for one uncomfortable setting by making several unrelated changes.

Why a PDF may not respond to these controls

The font controls are intended for supported ebook text. Kobo states that this text styling cannot be changed in the same way in a PDF. A PDF generally preserves the page layout created by its author, so changing the eReader’s font face or line spacing does not reflow that document like an ebook. If a control appears unavailable or has no visible effect in a particular file, the file format is the first thing to check.

Adjust brightness and the reading light

On models with a built-in light, open a book and swipe up or down along the left edge of the screen. Swiping upward makes the display brighter; swiping downward dims it. The brightness menu also provides a more precise adjustment when you want a specific level rather than a quick gesture.

ComfortLight and ComfortLight PRO are model-specific

Most Kobo eReader screens have a built-in light called ComfortLight, but not every model does. Kobo identifies the Kobo Touch, Kobo Touch 2.0, and Kobo mini as models without ComfortLight, so a brightness gesture will not create a light on those devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ComfortLight PRO changes the balance of blue and red light during the day. Kobo lists this feature for Clara 2E, Sage, Libra H2O, Forma, Clara HD, Aura H2O Edition 2, and Aura ONE. The list is model-specific; do not assume that an eReader with ordinary ComfortLight also has the PRO color-shifting feature.

A practical brightness adjustment

  1. Open the book and tap the center to expose the Reading Menu.
  2. Start at a low brightness that lets the letters remain clear.
  3. Raise the level gradually in a dark room or lower it in a bright room until the page is readable without glare.
  4. Read for several minutes before making another change. A level that looks bright for a moment can become tiring over a longer session.

If the screen has no built-in light, use ambient room lighting instead. Brightness controls cannot add hardware that the model does not contain.

Add an optional custom font

Kobo documents loading additional OpenType (.otf) and TrueType (.ttf) fonts through USB. This is optional and requires a computer, a compatible cable, and a font file you are entitled to use.

  1. Connect the eReader to the computer with the matching USB cable.
  2. When the reader asks what to do, tap Connect.
  3. On the computer, open the KOBOeReader drive.
  4. Look for a folder named fonts. If it is absent, create a folder with exactly that name.
  5. Copy the .otf or .ttf file into the fonts folder.
  6. Eject the KOBOeReader drive safely from the computer.
  7. Disconnect the cable after ejection is complete.
  8. Open a supported ebook, tap the center of the page, open the font controls, and select the supplemental font.

Kobo cautions that some fonts may not render properly. If letters appear missing, symbols are replaced, or the book becomes difficult to read, return to one of the built-in fonts and remove or replace the problematic file. A custom font does not alter the book’s underlying text or make PDF text reflow.

Fix common Wi‑Fi setup problems

Most failed first connections come from the network not being visible, credentials being entered incorrectly, or the reader and router using incompatible bands. Work through the checks below in order so that you do not change several variables at once.

Symptom Check Action
The network is not listed Distance, router availability, and hidden-network status Move the reader within range, confirm that another device can see the network, rescan the list, or manually add the hidden network if the eReader offers that option.
The password is rejected Capitalization and look-alike characters Re-enter it carefully. Pay particular attention to the number zero versus the letter O and to uppercase letters.
The reader connects elsewhere but not at home Wireless band and router configuration Try a 2.4 GHz network. Most Kobo eReaders connect only to 2.4 GHz.
A newer Elipsa cannot connect to a 2.4 GHz-only or 5 GHz-only network Whether the device supports both bands Kobo Elipsa released in June 2021 or later supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; use the band available from the router and confirm the network password.
Setup still fails after the network checks Model and location eligibility for computer setup Use Kobo Desktop only if the eReader and your region are supported by the current computer-setup guidance.

Band support in context

Kobo’s Wi‑Fi guidance says most eReaders connect only to 2.4 GHz networks. That is why a router broadcasting only a 5 GHz network may not appear even when a phone or laptop sees it. The stated exception is Kobo Elipsa released in June 2021 or newer, which supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The release date is a threshold in Kobo’s guidance, not a guarantee that every similarly named device has identical wireless hardware; check the exact model when in doubt.

A reliable order for personalizing the page

Once a book opens, personalize in an order that makes each change easy to judge:

  1. Set the light first. Choose a brightness suitable for the room. Text that is too dim or glaring can make a good font setting seem uncomfortable.
  2. Choose the font face. Compare the built-in choices at the default size and keep the one whose characters are clearest to you.
  3. Set the font size. Increase or decrease it until reading feels relaxed at your normal distance.
  4. Fine-tune line spacing. Add space when lines visually merge; reduce it if the page becomes unnecessarily long.
  5. Adjust margins. Narrow or widen the text block according to how much whitespace you prefer.
  6. Choose justification. Keep the alignment that produces the most even and comfortable word spacing in the language and book you are reading.

Read a few pages after each change. A setting that works for a short menu may not remain comfortable through a chapter, and the best result for one reader is not a universal recommendation. Because Kobo remembers these preferences for other supported books, a careful initial setup saves repeated adjustments later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know the boundaries of Kobo’s reading controls

  • They apply to supported ebook text, not every file: PDFs do not accept the same font, spacing, margin, and justification changes.
  • Light features depend on hardware: ComfortLight and ComfortLight PRO are not present on every model, and the three models Kobo identifies as lacking ComfortLight cannot use the brightness gesture to illuminate their screens.
  • Computer setup is conditional: A USB cable and computer do not bypass the model and regional restrictions on Kobo Desktop.
  • Custom fonts are optional: They add another choice but can render incorrectly, so a built-in font is the safest fallback when a title looks wrong.

Quick checklist

  • Charge for at least one hour.
  • Select language and Wi‑Fi setup on the device.
  • Join the correct network and enter its password with exact capitalization.
  • Allow updates, which Kobo says may take up to 20 minutes.
  • Sign in to or create a Kobo account.
  • Open a supported ebook and tap its center for the Reading Menu.
  • Set font face, size, line spacing, margins, and justification one at a time.
  • Swipe along the left edge to adjust brightness when the model has a built-in light.
  • Use Kobo Desktop only when the model and region are supported.
  • For a custom font, copy an entitled .otf or .ttf file into the fonts folder on the KOBOeReader drive, eject safely, and select it from the Reading Menu.
