If you mean the move from PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, compatibility is broad: PS5 runs the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, while Xbox Series X|S runs most Xbox One games and a selected catalogue of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles.
If you mean consoles that will follow PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, there is no universal answer yet. Microsoft has announced Project Helix and says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games, but it has not published a title-by-title list or consumer launch details. Sony has not established a backward-compatibility policy for a PS5 successor in the official material available for this question.

First, identify the generation you are asking about
The phrase “next-generation consoles” is used for two different transitions. That distinction changes the answer completely:
- Current transition: PS4 to PS5, and Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. These consoles are available now and have documented compatibility policies.
- Future transition: a console released after PS5, or a new Xbox after Series X|S. Microsoft has announced a direction for its next Xbox; Sony’s policy for a future PlayStation is not established here.
A game being playable through backward compatibility also does not necessarily mean you receive its native current-generation edition. Compatibility, an upgrade, and a remaster are separate things.

PS4 games on PS5: what works
The size of the supported library
PlayStation says the overwhelming majority of its more than 4,000 PS4 games can be played on PS5. That is a platform-level statement, not a promise that every title behaves identically. Sony warns that some games can have unavailable functionality, errors, or unexpected behavior.
Some PS4 titles receive improvements through Game Boost, but Game Boost is selective. It does not turn every backward-compatible game into a fully rebuilt PS5 version, and it does not guarantee the same frame rate, resolution, loading times, or feature set across the catalogue.
Digital PS4 purchases
When you sign in to the account that owns a digital PS4 game, the title is available in your PlayStation library. You can download the compatible version to a PS5, subject to the game’s availability and any publisher restrictions. PlayStation Plus cloud storage can be used for saves under the service’s terms, so check that your save has synchronized before changing consoles.
PS4 discs and PS5 models
A PS4 disc works only with a PS5 model that has a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs. Insert the disc, install the game, and leave the disc in the drive whenever you play; the disc serves as proof of ownership even after the files are installed.
If a publisher offers an eligible PS5 upgrade for a disc game, the PS5 version is downloaded separately. The disc requirement does not disappear: you still need the disc-drive PS5 and must insert the PS4 disc to launch the upgraded copy. A digital-only PS5 cannot use that physical upgrade path.
What “playable” does not promise
Backward compatibility means the PS4 edition runs on PS5. It does not guarantee that every peripheral, online mode, downloadable add-on, or in-game feature works exactly as it did on PS4. PlayStation recommends trying the game before buying add-ons for it when compatibility is uncertain.

Players using the same multiplayer PS4 game can generally play together when one person is on PS4 and the other is running that PS4 edition on PS5 through backward compatibility. That remains dependent on the game’s servers, account requirements, and service availability.
Important PlayStation limitation
PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. Do not assume that support for PS4 discs extends another generation backward.
Xbox One games on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox One compatibility
Most Xbox One games play on Xbox Series X|S. Digital titles that are supported appear in the console’s install library when you sign in with the account that owns them. Xbox’s backward-compatibility work included more than 500,000 hours of testing and quality-standard work, according to Microsoft, but that figure describes the effort behind the program—not identical behavior for every game.
Xbox 360 and original Xbox games
Series X|S also supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Support is catalogue-based, not automatic for every title from those systems. Check the supported catalogue for the specific game before buying a used disc or expecting a digital download.
Disc behavior on Series X
Xbox Series X has a disc drive and can use eligible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox discs. Insert a supported disc to trigger the download or installation. Once the game is installed, keep the disc inserted whenever you play; the disc is still required to verify ownership.

Xbox Series S has no disc drive. It can run supported digital games, but it cannot install or verify a game from an Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox disc. If your library is primarily physical, Series S does not provide a disc-based migration path.

Compatibility is not the same as a free upgrade
There are three different outcomes when moving a game to a newer console:
- Backward-compatible edition: you run the older PS4 or Xbox One build on the new hardware.
- Native upgrade: the publisher provides a PS5 or Xbox Series version. The offer can be free, paid, time-limited, or unavailable, depending on the title.
- Remaster or remake: a separately sold release with substantially changed assets, code, or features.
An eligible PS4 game may offer a digital PS5 upgrade, but not every playable game does. A free upgrade is not implied merely because the older edition runs. Disc-based upgrades require a disc-drive PS5, and the original disc remains necessary for access.

What has actually been announced about the next Xbox
Project Helix
Microsoft announced Project Helix as a next-generation Xbox in development. Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s vice president for Next Generation, said on March 11, 2026: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.”
Microsoft also said it remains committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come. That is a strategic commitment, not a published compatibility percentage or a guarantee for every individual game, disc, accessory, save file, or downloadable expansion.
Development hardware is not a release date
Microsoft said developer hardware alpha versions are planned to begin shipping in 2027. This is a milestone for developers, not a consumer launch date. No retail price, final specifications, disc-drive configuration, or complete compatibility catalogue has been provided in the announcement described here.
How to interpret the promise
The safest reading is that Microsoft intends the next Xbox to preserve access to Xbox console and PC games, including games spanning four Xbox generations. Until Microsoft publishes a title-level list and final hardware details, treat that as direction rather than proof that your particular Series X or Series S game will work unchanged.

What is known about a PS5 successor
The official PlayStation material covered here documents PS4-to-PS5 compatibility, not a policy for a console after PS5. There is no established statement in those materials that PS5 games, PS5 discs, or PS5 digital purchases will run on a future PlayStation.

- Identify the edition. Write down whether you own the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Xbox 360, or original Xbox version.
- Identify the copy format. Digital purchases follow the owning account; discs require compatible hardware with a drive.
- Check the platform catalogue. For Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, verify that the exact title appears in the supported catalogue. Do not rely on the fact that another game in the same series works.
- Check upgrade terms. Look for a title-specific PS5 or Xbox Series upgrade and whether it is free, paid, or unavailable.
- Back up or synchronize saves. Confirm cloud synchronization under your account and service terms before switching hardware.
- Test before buying extras. Launch the game first, then verify online modes and downloadable content before purchasing add-ons.
Common mistakes and their fixes
“Every PS4 game becomes a PS5 game”
Why it is wrong: most PS4 games are playable, but a native PS5 upgrade is a separate publisher decision.
Fix: distinguish the compatible PS4 edition from an upgraded PS5 edition and check the individual game’s offer.
“Any Xbox disc works in Series S”
Why it is wrong: Series S has no disc drive.
Fix: use a digital license on Series S or choose hardware with a drive if your collection is physical.

Fix: check the game’s documented features and test the exact mode you care about.

Why it is wrong: Project Helix has no published per-title list or consumer specifications yet.
Fix: keep your current console until the game and format you own are confirmed for the new hardware.

Bottom line for buying and upgrading decisions
For the current generation, the answer is largely yes: PS5 is a strong destination for PS4 games, and Xbox Series X|S supports most Xbox One games plus selected older Xbox titles. Your biggest practical decision is physical versus digital ownership. Choose a PS5 with a disc drive for PS4 discs, choose Series X for eligible Xbox discs, and treat Series S as digital-only.
For consoles after PS5 and Series X|S, the answer is not settled. Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement points toward broad Xbox and PC game support and a four-generation commitment, while Sony’s future policy is not established in the available official guidance. Until final catalogues and hardware details arrive, compatibility for any specific PS5 or Series X game remains unconfirmed.
