It does not safely remove a credential from your files or erase one from earlier commits. This guide sets up Gitleaks with the pre-commit framework, explains how to handle a finding, and separates prevention from cleanup after exposure.
What the hook does—and does not do
Git runs a pre-commit hook before creating a commit. If the hook exits with a non-zero status, Git aborts the commit. The hook is useful as an early warning because it can scan the content you are about to record: the staged changes.

“Remove” needs an important qualification: a scanner detects and reports a suspected secret; it should not automatically rewrite your file or index. You decide whether the finding is a real credential, correct the source, stage the fixed content, and run the check again.

A local hook is not a security boundary. Developers can skip hooks, and each clone needs the hook installed. Pair it with careful staging, team setup instructions, CI or hosting-side checks, and credential rotation when exposure has already occurred.

Set up Gitleaks as a pre-commit hook
This setup uses Gitleaks through the pre-commit framework. You need Git and the pre-commit command installed for your operating system. From the repository root, add a file named .pre-commit-config.yaml:
repos:
- repo: https://github.com/gitleaks/gitleaks
rev: <pinned-current-release>
hooks:
- id: gitleaks
Replace <pinned-current-release> with a currently supported Gitleaks release tag. The upstream README’s version pin is an example, not a promise that the release remains current. Check the Gitleaks repository for the current release, supported hook ID, and setup details; pin the selected revision so that updates are deliberate and reproducible.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Install the hook in this clone: run
pre-commit installfrom the repository. This configures Git to invoke the framework’s hook before commits. - Check a staged change: edit a file, stage it with
git add, then inspect exactly what is staged withgit diff --cached. Commit normally to trigger the hook. - Confirm setup for teammates: commit the configuration file and include installation in onboarding or developer setup steps. The config is shared in the repository; installing the hook is a local, per-clone step.
Gitleaks documents staged scanning and a pre-commit integration in its upstream documentation. Scan the staged content rather than assuming a scan of the working directory represents what the commit will contain: staged and unstaged versions of a file can differ.
When the scan finds a suspected secret
- Stop and inspect the finding. Determine whether it is an active credential or a false positive. Avoid copying a full credential into chat, issue trackers, or logs.
- If it is real, remove it from the change. Replace hardcoded values with an environment variable or a secret-management service. Do not treat deleting the current file as revocation of a credential.
- Stage the correction and inspect it. Use
git addon the corrected file, then reviewgit diff --cachedto ensure the staged version no longer includes the value. - Run the check again. Retry the commit after the scanner passes. For a confirmed false positive, use a narrow, reviewed exception rather than broadly disabling or ignoring scanner findings.
Stage deliberately: broad staging can include files or changes you did not intend to commit. GitHub’s prevention guidance recommends careful review of staged changes and avoiding hardcoded credentials.

Know when the hook can be skipped
Git permits bypassing a pre-commit hook with git commit --no-verify. The pre-commit framework also documents a skip mechanism, including SKIP=gitleaks. These escape hatches are useful to know when diagnosing a workflow, but they mean a local hook alone cannot guarantee that every commit is scanned.
For enforcement, make hook installation part of team onboarding and use additional controls appropriate to your repository. GitHub push protection can block supported secret types during a push when it is enabled, but it does not cover every kind of secret. GitHub notes that existing alerts can affect blocking behavior and that scan timeouts may lead to a post-push scan. Availability and behavior can vary by plan, account, and date.

If a secret was already committed or pushed
Act as though a real credential is exposed, including when the repository is private. First revoke or rotate it with the service that issued it; removing the value from the latest version of a file does not make an exposed credential safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the secret was committed, decide whether repository history also needs cleanup. Rewriting history is a separate recovery operation—not something the pre-commit hook can do. It changes commit IDs, can invalidate signatures and disrupt pull requests, and requires coordination with collaborators. Existing clones and forks may retain copies; a force-push does not automatically remove cached views or every copy elsewhere.

GitHub’s official procedure covers rewriting history with git-filter-repo, force-updating refs, coordinating with collaborators, and contacting GitHub Support for certain cached views or pull request references. Its --sensitive-data-removal option requires git-filter-repo 2.47 or later; --replace-text can replace text in non-binary files across repository history. Follow the procedure rather than improvising a destructive rewrite: GitHub: Removing sensitive data from a repository.
Use local and remote checks as layers
The local hook gives fast feedback before a commit, while hosting-side push protection can block supported secrets as changes are pushed. Git also supports a pre-push hook, which runs at a later point in the workflow. These controls differ in timing, installation, and coverage; none should be described as a guarantee that no secret can ever be exposed.
For GitHub repositories, consult the current guidance on push protection from the command line and using push protection from the command line. Confirm whether push protection is available and enabled for your repository, and which secret types it supports. Keep the local scan, careful review, and remote controls complementary rather than relying on any one of them.
