The reliable way to host Forever Stranded is to use its dedicated Server Pack V-2.0.9, run it with Minecraft 1.10.2 Forge on Java 8, accept the EULA on the first launch, and make sure any supplied template world is renamed world in lowercase. Players on your home network can connect through the host computer’s local address; players elsewhere need router port forwarding or a port-tunneling service.

What Forever Stranded requires
Forever Stranded is a large modpack built for a specific legacy stack. Treating it like a current Minecraft server is the quickest way to create missing-mod errors or a failed launch.

Understand the pack before you install it
Forever Stranded places players alone on a dry, hot world and asks them to survive and rebuild. Its quest lines are not optional flavor: progression guides what to craft and unlock next. Early survival revolves around staying cool, obtaining water, and managing hunger. The map is hardcore and uses additional lives earned through progression, so a server restart does not turn it into a conventional easy-survival world.
- Heat: plan cooling and shelter rather than wandering indefinitely in exposed terrain.
- Water: obtaining a dependable water source is an early priority.
- Hunger: food management is part of the opening progression, not a late-game concern.
- Quests: use the quest lines to coordinate group goals and avoid skipping required stages.
- Lives: the pack’s progression can provide additional lives, but deaths still carry the consequences intended by the map.
These mechanics affect server decisions. A group should agree in advance on who controls the world files, how backups are made, and whether everyone is comfortable with the pack’s harsher rules.

Use the dedicated Server Pack
Open the Forever Stranded project’s official files page on CurseForge and select the matching Forever Stranded Server Pack V-2.0.9. Do not assemble a server by downloading a few familiar mods from separate pages. The server pack is intended to keep the required mods, configurations, scripts, and any supplied world content together.
Keep the client release aligned
Each player should install the same Forever Stranded release represented by the server pack. A client on another pack revision can have different mod versions, configuration files, recipes, or quest data even when the Minecraft number still says 1.10.2. Record the release number in your group instructions so nobody silently updates to a different build.
Choose a stable download location
Download the archive to a location you control, then extract it rather than running files from inside the compressed archive. Avoid a desktop folder that is automatically synchronized or cleaned, and avoid a path that contains unusual permissions if the operating system blocks scripts from writing files.
Create a clean server folder
- Create a dedicated directory such as
ForeverStrandedServeron the host computer. - Extract every item from the Server Pack V-2.0.9 archive into that directory.
- Keep the pack’s
mods, configuration folders, scripts, Forge files, and world content together. Do not move only the mods folder to another location. - Open the folder and identify whether the pack includes a Windows script such as
run.bat, a Unix script such asrun.sh, or a setup script. Supplied scripts are preferable because they normally reference the pack’s expected Forge file and arguments. - Do not add client-only visual or launcher mods to the server. If you are forced to build from the client files instead of using the Server Pack, compare the set carefully and remove mods that are explicitly client-only.
Make a copy of the untouched extracted folder before the first launch. That gives you a known-good baseline if an experimental configuration or an interrupted world conversion causes trouble.

Install and select Java 8
Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime on the computer that will run the server. The important point is not merely that Java exists; the launch script must actually call the Java 8 executable. A newer Java installation may be selected by the operating system even when Java 8 is also installed.
Verify the runtime used by the shell
On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:
java -versionOn Linux or another Unix-like system, run the same command in a terminal. Confirm that the output identifies version 8. If it reports a newer major version, adjust the system PATH or use the full path to the Java 8 executable in the launch script. Restarting a terminal after changing PATH prevents it from retaining an old environment.
Why Java 8 is the baseline
Technic’s official Forge-server instructions state that Java 8 works for Minecraft versions below 1.17. Forever Stranded is built for 1.10.2, so Java 8 is the appropriate compatibility baseline. Do not infer that a current pack’s Java recommendation applies to this one.
Run Forge setup and the supplied script
When the Server Pack includes setup files
Read the supplied setup instructions and inspect the script before running it. If it downloads or generates a Forge server file, let it finish in the dedicated folder. Then use the supplied launch script rather than creating a second command that may point at the wrong jar.

When no usable script is included
The general Forge procedure is to install Forge for Minecraft 1.10.2, place the resulting server files in the clean folder, copy the pack’s server-compatible mods and configurations, and remove client-only mods. The launch command must reference the Forge server jar that was actually installed; jar filenames vary by Forge build, so do not copy a filename from another guide.
A simple Windows script can look like this after you replace the illustrative jar name with the actual Forge server jar in your folder:

Set an initial and maximum heap that leave memory for the operating system and any other services. Assigning all available RAM to Java can make the host less stable. If the pack’s own script specifies different values, start with those values and change them only after observing actual memory pressure.
On Linux, make the script executable with chmod +x run.sh, then start it from the server directory with ./run.sh. On Windows, double-clicking run.bat is convenient, but running it from Command Prompt keeps the error text visible.

- Start the server once. It may stop after creating initial files; that is expected for a new Forge server.
- In the server folder, open
eula.txt. - Change the line
eula=falsetoeula=true, save the file, and close the editor. - Start the same script again and wait for the server to finish loading. The console should remain running instead of immediately returning to the command prompt.
Accepting the EULA is a required confirmation that you agree to Minecraft’s terms. It is not a substitute for installing the pack or Forge, and changing the line does not repair a missing jar or an incompatible mod.
Install the supplied world template correctly
Forever Stranded’s project description says: “Server files rename template to “world”. all lower case.” If the Server Pack contains a directory named template, rename that directory to exactly world before starting the final world. Use lowercase letters and do not create a nested path such as world/template.
- Stop the server completely if it is running.
- Look in the extracted pack for the supplied template world.
- Rename the template directory to
world. - Confirm that the folder containing files such as the level data is directly named
world. - Start the server again and watch the console for world-loading messages.
If the pack does not contain a template, do not invent one or rename an unrelated directory. The lowercase instruction applies when that supplied template is present.
Connect from the same local network
For players on the host’s Wi-Fi or wired network, port forwarding is generally unnecessary. Start the server, find the host computer’s local IP address, and give that address to the other players. They should launch the matching Minecraft 1.10.2 Forge client, open the multiplayer screen, add the host’s local address, and connect while the server console is running.

- Use the host’s local address, not a public address, for players inside the same network.
- Allow the Java server through the operating system firewall when prompted. A blocked firewall rule can look like a mod or Forge failure even when the server loaded correctly.
- Keep the server window open. Closing the console without using the server’s normal stop command can risk an incomplete save.
If local players cannot connect, first verify that the server reached its ready state, that every client has the same pack release, and that the host firewall permits the Java process. Only after those checks should you investigate router settings.
Make the server reachable over the internet
Router port forwarding
Players outside your home network cannot normally use the host’s private address. Configure a port-forwarding rule in the router that sends the server’s configured game port to the host computer’s local address. The exact menu names differ by router, so use the router’s documentation for the forwarding screen and protocol selection.
- Give the host computer a stable local address, either through a DHCP reservation or a fixed address supported by your network.
- Check the server configuration for the port it is listening on.
- Create a router forwarding rule for that port to the host computer.
- Allow the same traffic through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Restart the server and test from a connection outside the home network, such as a phone hotspot.
Do not test an internet address from inside the same network and assume the result is authoritative; some routers do not support loopback connections. Never publish your home public address more widely than necessary, and remove the forwarding rule when you no longer run the server.

Port tunneling
If you cannot change the router, a port-tunneling service can provide an externally reachable address that forwards traffic to the running server. Follow that service’s instructions for installing its connector, selecting the local game port, and keeping the tunnel process online. Every player must use the tunnel’s current address, and the host must run both the Minecraft server and the tunnel connector.
Tunneling adds another process and another possible point of failure. It does not solve a mod mismatch, a Java problem, or a server that never finished starting.

Every player should use Minecraft 1.10.2 with the same Forge version and the same Forever Stranded release represented by the server pack. Copying only a few mods into an otherwise different installation is not sufficient because configuration files and dependency versions matter too.
- Install the same pack release on every computer.
- Do not let one player update individual mods independently.
- Keep the client’s configuration files aligned with the server’s pack files.
- Remove client-only additions from the server, while retaining them on a client only when they do not alter the server’s required mod set.
- When troubleshooting, have all players compare their mod lists and pack version before changing network settings.
A client that reaches the server but disconnects during login commonly has a mod-list or configuration mismatch. The disconnect message usually identifies the missing, extra, or wrong-version mod; correct that difference on the affected client rather than repeatedly restarting the router.

Backups, shutdowns, and routine administration
Stop cleanly
Use the server console’s normal stop command rather than closing the window. A clean stop lets the world save and releases the Java process. Wait for the process to end before copying or replacing world files.
Back up the right directories
Back up the world directory and the pack’s configuration files together. A world backup without matching configuration can produce different behavior after restoration. Keep at least one copy outside the live server folder and label backups with dates so you can identify the last known-good state.
Change one variable at a time
When testing a new mod, configuration edit, Java path, or memory setting, make one change, launch, and record the result. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail and makes rollback practical.
Self-hosting versus managed modded hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the Server Pack files, configurations, backups, and installed mods. It also makes you responsible for Java 8, Forge 1.10.2 compatibility, firewall rules, port forwarding, uptime, and recovery.
Managed modded Minecraft hosting can be useful when the host cannot configure a router or does not want to maintain a home server. Before choosing a provider, verify that it explicitly supports legacy Java 8, Minecraft 1.10.2 Forge, custom Server Pack files, file access, scheduled backups, restart controls, and the number of simultaneous players you expect. Compatibility should be confirmed before payment because support for modern Minecraft versions does not imply support for this older Forge stack.

Bottom line
Use the official Forever Stranded Server Pack V-2.0.9 rather than rebuilding the pack, run its Forge 1.10.2 server with Java 8, accept the EULA, and apply the lowercase world rename when a template is supplied. Once every client matches the same release, local play needs only the host’s private address; remote play requires correctly configured forwarding or a tunnel. Those version, world-folder, and networking details account for most successful installations and most avoidable failures.
