For a self-hosted site, Google Site Kit is usually the simplest integrated route. If you control DNS and want one property covering every protocol and subdomain variation, choose a Domain property and verify it with a DNS record. Choose a URL-prefix property when you need to cover only one exact protocol and URL path or do not have DNS access.

Installing a plugin alone does not establish ownership. Search Console will not provide the property’s reports until Google completes verification, and the sitemap should be submitted only after that verification succeeds.

What you need before connecting WordPress
Decide first whether the site is ready for Google to reach. Use the production URL that visitors can open without signing in. A password wall, maintenance screen, staging host, or unresolved DNS record can make both verification and crawling fail.
- The site is live on its final public domain.
- Visitors who are not logged in can load the home page.
- The domain resolves and the web server returns a response.
- You have WordPress administrator access for plugin or site-setting changes, if you plan to use Site Kit or an HTML tag.
- You have DNS-provider access if you plan to create a Domain property.
- You have access to the website’s required document root if you plan to upload a verification file.
- For Site Kit, the documented requirements are WordPress 5.2 or later, PHP 7.4 or later, and an available WordPress REST API.
In WordPress, check the REST API under Tools → Site Health. Resolve any critical availability or security issue before beginning. Verification is a check of the page, DNS zone, or file that Google can reach from outside your account; a value visible only inside the WordPress editor is not enough.

Choose Domain or URL-prefix property
Search Console treats these as different scopes. Pick the narrowest scope that answers your reporting need, because the property you create determines which URLs appear together in the reports.

Enter a URL-prefix property with the complete address, including its protocol, such as https://example.com/. Enter a Domain property as the bare domain, without https:// or www. If your site uses several subdomains and you own their DNS, Domain is generally less prone to omissions. If you operate only one path or a delegated section, URL-prefix keeps the scope intentionally limited.

Site Kit is Google’s WordPress plugin for connecting services such as Search Console inside WordPress. During setup it can perform the ownership check and connect Search Console instead of making you copy a tag manually. It does not remove the need for a public, reachable site or a Google account with the appropriate permissions.
1. Confirm production visibility and requirements
Open the public site in a private browser window. Make sure the final home-page URL loads without a password, maintenance mode, or an authentication prompt. In Tools → Site Health, confirm that the REST API is available. Confirm that the WordPress and PHP versions meet Site Kit’s documented minimums: WordPress 5.2+ and PHP 7.4+.
2. Install and activate Site Kit
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Site Kit, select the Google plugin, and choose Install.
- After installation finishes, select Activate.
Use the official plugin listing and keep WordPress able to make outbound requests. A security plugin, firewall, or hosting rule that blocks Google’s verification requests can interrupt setup even when the site appears normal in a browser.
3. Sign in with the account that should own the property
Open Site Kit → Dashboard and sign in with the Google account that should administer the Search Console property. Review and grant the permissions requested during setup. If an organization owns the site, use an account whose ownership and delegation arrangements are understood by the team; changing the person who installed the plugin does not by itself transfer property ownership.

Site Kit checks whether the signed-in account already has a usable verified property. When it needs to establish ownership, it attempts its virtual HTML-file method and can fall back to placing an HTML verification tag. Google then checks the resulting file or the rendered page through its verification service.

5. Set up Search Console in the wizard
When the wizard offers the service, choose Set up for Search Console. If no associated property exists, Site Kit creates a URL-prefix property for the site address. If an eligible verified property already exists, it connects that property instead of creating a duplicate.
6. Check or change the connected property
After setup, go to Site Kit → Settings → Connected Services → Search Console. That screen shows which property is connected and provides the control to change it when you have access to another eligible property. Verify the protocol and hostname before interpreting the reports; a property for one URL prefix will not automatically represent a different prefix.
7. Allow the first data to arrive
Site Kit says newly connected Search Console data can take up to approximately 48 hours to populate. During that period, an empty chart does not prove that setup failed. Check the connection state and Search Console property first, then allow the initial processing window to pass.

What Site Kit does not do
- It cannot verify a site that Google cannot reach publicly.
- It does not grant DNS access or create a DNS TXT record for you.
- It does not make a sitemap valid; the sitemap still has to be reachable and submitted.
- It does not broaden a URL-prefix property into a Domain property.
Manual verification with an HTML tag
Use the HTML-tag method for a URL-prefix property when you can edit the page head but do not want to change DNS or upload a file. The important detail is that Google checks the rendered head of the destination page reached by a non-logged-in visitor, not merely the source editor where you pasted the value.
- In Search Console, choose Add property → URL-prefix.
- Enter the full URL, including
http://orhttps://, and continue. - Choose HTML tag under the other verification methods.
- Copy the complete meta tag exactly as supplied. Do not remove attributes, alter quotation marks, or copy only the token.
- Add the tag to the rendered
<head>of the home page that anonymous visitors reach. If the entered address redirects, Google checks the rendered destination page, so the tag must be present there. - Save the WordPress change, clear any page or CDN cache that serves an older head, return to Search Console, and select Verify.
On WordPress.com, the site-verification field is exposed under Jetpack → Traffic (or Jetpack → Settings → Traffic, depending on the dashboard). Paste the supplied value in that field, save it, and then run verification. A theme replacement or head-cleanup setting can remove a manually inserted tag, so record where it lives and recheck it after major theme changes.
Manual verification with a DNS TXT record
DNS verification is required for a Domain property and is also useful when you want the verification to remain independent of WordPress themes and page templates.
- In Search Console, choose Add property → Domain.
- Enter the domain only, without
https://orwwwunless that text is literally part of the registered domain. - Copy the exact TXT record value Google displays.
- Open the control panel for the domain or DNS provider and create a TXT record. Use the host or name field expected by that provider and paste Google’s value without changing it.
- Save the DNS change, return to Search Console, and select Verify.
WordPress.com users manage this at Domains → DNS records. DNS updates are not instantaneous. If Search Console cannot see the record immediately, confirm the value and host/name are exact, then wait a day or two before trying again. Do not delete unrelated TXT records; a domain can publish several records for different services.

A DNS TXT record is not a WordPress page element, so changing a theme, permalink setting, or page builder does not normally remove it. It does, however, depend on continued control of the DNS zone: moving nameservers or changing providers without copying the record can break future ownership checks.
Manual verification with an HTML file
Choose file upload when you can place a file at the exact web-root location required by Search Console. Download the verification file Google supplies, upload it without renaming or editing it, and confirm that its exact URL opens publicly before selecting Verify.
Google’s file-upload check does not follow redirects. The file must therefore be reachable at the exact URL Search Console specifies, on the property you are verifying, without a redirect to another hostname, protocol, or path. A file placed in a WordPress media library or a nested application directory usually does not satisfy a root-location requirement.
When file upload is a good fit
- You have SFTP, hosting-panel, or deployment access to the document root.
- Your server can serve a static file without authentication.
- You want to avoid editing a theme’s head and cannot change DNS.
When to choose another method
Use DNS if the site’s application redirects every root request or if you need Domain-property coverage. Use an HTML tag if you cannot reach the root directory but can safely edit the rendered home-page head.

After ownership is verified, submit the sitemap so Search Console knows where the site’s URL list is published. The sitemap is a discovery aid; submitting it does not guarantee indexing, ranking, or inclusion of every URL.
- Open Search Console and select the verified property.
- Go to Index → Sitemaps.
- Enter the sitemap URL in the submission field. WordPress.com says its sitemap is typically the domain followed by
/sitemap.xml; use the actual sitemap address generated for your site. - Select Submit.
- Review the resulting status and open any error details. A successful submission means Google accepted the sitemap location for processing, not that every listed URL is indexed.
Google recommends hosting a sitemap at the site root when possible. One sitemap is limited to 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs. If your site exceeds either limit, use multiple sitemap files and a sitemap index rather than forcing all URLs into one file. Keep the submitted address within the same property scope: an HTTPS sitemap or a different subdomain may not be represented by a narrower URL-prefix property.
Check the sitemap before submitting
- Open the URL in a private browser window and confirm it returns the sitemap rather than a login page or maintenance screen.
- Confirm the file is generated for the current production site, not a staging hostname.
- Look for malformed XML, server errors, or a redirect chain.
- Make sure important canonical URLs use the same protocol and hostname you intend to report.
WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress: which instructions apply?
The verification principle is the same, but the controls you can reach differ. Self-hosted WordPress normally gives you plugin and server access. WordPress.com may expose a managed field for a tag and a managed DNS screen instead.

If you cannot access any of these control surfaces, ask the person who manages the site, hosting, or DNS to complete verification while you retain the Search Console account that should receive access.
How to choose the least troublesome method
Choose Site Kit when you want WordPress reporting
Site Kit is the practical choice for a self-hosted production site when you want Search Console performance data visible in WordPress and prefer an assisted setup. It handles the connection as part of plugin setup and reports the connected property in its settings.
Choose DNS when coverage and durability matter most
Use a Domain property when your organization controls DNS and needs protocol and subdomain variations represented together. The TXT record is independent of your WordPress theme, but the setup waits on DNS propagation and requires continuing DNS administration.
Choose a URL-prefix tag when scope must be narrow
An HTML tag is suitable when you need one protocol and path, have no DNS access, and can edit the rendered head. Keep track of the template or setting that inserts it so a redesign does not silently remove the verification element.
Choose file upload when server access is available
File upload avoids theme edits, but it is strict about the exact URL and does not follow redirects. It is best for teams that already deploy files to the site root.
Troubleshoot verification and connection failures
“HTML tag not found”
Open the actual landing page in a private window and inspect the rendered <head>, not just the WordPress editor or page-builder preview. Confirm that the complete tag is present on the page Google reaches after any redirect. Save the setting, purge relevant caches, and retry verification.
“DNS record not found”
Compare the TXT value character for character with Google’s value. Check that the record was added to the correct DNS zone and that the provider’s host/name field was used correctly. Allow DNS propagation time; moving nameservers or editing a secondary DNS provider will not help if it is not authoritative for the domain.
File verification fails
Request the exact file URL from an unauthenticated browser. It must return Google’s unchanged file at the required root location. Remove redirect rules, login protection, or a CDN behavior that rewrites the request before trying again.
Timeout, DNS, or inaccessible-site error
Confirm that the domain resolves publicly, the server responds, and the production site is not behind a password, maintenance page, or firewall rule that blocks Google. Test both the protocol and hostname entered in Search Console; a working www address does not prove that the bare domain or HTTPS variant is configured.
Site Kit reports a token or verification error
Site Kit first attempts its virtual HTML-file approach and then an HTML tag. If both fail, use a manual method and inspect the rendered page or DNS zone directly. Also check that the signed-in Google account has the required permissions and that the WordPress REST API is available.
Site Kit will not start setup
Check that the site is live production, not password-protected or in maintenance mode; verify WordPress 5.2+ and PHP 7.4+; confirm REST API availability under Tools → Site Health; and review whether a security layer blocks outbound requests. Correct those conditions before reinstalling the plugin.
The property verifies but reports are empty
Confirm that you are viewing the same protocol, hostname, and path that you verified. Then allow the initial Search Console processing period and check that the sitemap submission points to the live site. Verification proves ownership; it does not create historical data or guarantee that pages are indexed.
The sitemap is rejected
Open the submitted URL directly, check for an authentication page or server error, and make sure the sitemap belongs to the selected property. Validate the XML and stay within the 50 MB uncompressed and 50,000-URL limit for a single sitemap. Split larger sites with a sitemap index.

Keep the connection working after launch
- Keep the verified tag in the active rendered head, or keep the DNS TXT record in the authoritative DNS zone, rather than storing it only in a temporary staging configuration.
- After a theme change, migration, domain move, or HTTPS rollout, confirm that the connected property still matches the canonical production URL.
- Do not remove a verification file or TXT record simply because the first check succeeded; future ownership checks and account recovery can depend on it.
- When changing hosting or DNS providers, copy verification records and test the public site before switching traffic.
- Review Site Kit → Settings → Connected Services → Search Console after administrative changes to ensure the intended property remains connected.
The reliable sequence is therefore: make the site publicly reachable, select the property scope, complete one ownership method, connect or confirm the property, and submit the live sitemap. Each step addresses a different requirement, so skipping verification or submitting a sitemap to an unverified property leaves the connection incomplete.
