You can run a fanless mini PC as a quiet home server by choosing a model that fits your workload, installing an operating system it supports, connecting it over Ethernet, and configuring storage, security, and automatic recovery after a power cut. Fanless describes the cooling design—not unlimited performance or guaranteed 24/7 reliability—so check the exact model’s specifications and keep its cooling surfaces unobstructed.
1. Decide what the server needs to do
Start with the services you plan to run. A file share, media service, or home-automation application may need less memory and CPU headroom than several containers or virtual machines. Estimate your storage needs, then check the mini PC’s supported operating systems, memory type and capacity, storage slots, network ports, firmware options, and operating-temperature range.

For example, MeLE lists the Quieter 2Q with a J4125 processor, 4GB or 8GB of LPDDR4 memory, 128GB or 256GB of eMMC storage, Ubuntu support, a 1Gb RJ45 port, and M.2 SATA/NVMe SSD expansion (MeLE Quieter 2Q specifications). That is a compact option, but its listed memory is modest for heavier virtualization.
At a more expandable end, Supermicro lists the SYS-E100-13AD-H with an Intel Core i7-1265UE, support for up to 64GB of DDR5 SO-DIMM memory, dual 2.5GbE, M.2 NVMe and SATA storage, no system fans, and an operating range of 0–50°C (Supermicro SYS-E100-13AD-H specifications). These are different classes of system, not interchangeable recommendations; confirm current price and availability in your region.

- Elegant Fanless Cooling Design - This fanless PC features passive cooling system that prevents overheat. It provides a quiet and stable computing environment, supports 24/7 operation. While its unique design ensures dust resistance and silent operation, please note that fanless mini PCs will have a surface temperature of 55°C to 70°C, which is hotter than the case temperature of traditional fan-cooled mini PCs, but meets the safety standards of the International Electrotechnical IEC62368-1:2018
Check the cooling design and environment
A passively cooled computer sheds heat through its chassis, so it still needs room for heat to escape. Check the manufacturer’s operating range and placement guidance, and do not cover or enclose the case unless the manufacturer says that arrangement is supported. Supermicro specifies 0–50°C for its SYS-E100-13AD-H. Orbsmart says the AW-16L’s housing can become warm because it dissipates heat; that statement applies to that model, not every fanless PC (Orbsmart AW-16L support).
2. Choose and install a supported operating system
Ubuntu Server is one option, but use an operating system supported by the exact mini PC and suited to the services you intend to run. Ubuntu’s official Ubuntu Server download page provides the download and links to installation documentation.

- Processor of the Mini Desktop Computer: 4 cores i7 CPU, 8 MB Cache, Base Frequency 1.8GHz, Max Turbo Frequency 4.6GHz, 14 nm Lithography.
- RAM & Drive of The Mini Desktop Computer: 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD(Solid State Disk).
- Graphics of the Mini Computer: UHD Graphics 620, 4096x2304, 4K High Definition streaming capability and dual Monitor Support via HD&VGA Ports.
- Features of the Industrial PC: Fanless, all metal case, 2x COM RS232
- What's in Box: 1 x Mini PC, 1 x Power Supply, 1 x Power Cable, 1 x HD Cable, 2 x Antennas, 2 x Sata wires, Screws
- Check the mini PC maker’s documentation for supported operating systems and any model-specific firmware notes.
- Download the installer from the operating system publisher and prepare a USB installer using its current instructions.
- Connect the installer, open the computer’s documented boot menu, and select the USB drive.
- Install the OS on the intended system drive, following the installer’s prompts.
- Remove the USB installer and confirm that the computer boots from its internal drive.
Boot keys and menu names vary by manufacturer and model. Orbsmart, for example, documents Del for BIOS setup and F7 for boot selection on its AW-16L; those keys are not universal (Orbsmart AW-16L support).
3. Connect it to your home network
For a server that stays in one place, wired Ethernet is a practical default: it avoids relying on Wi-Fi coverage and gives clients a consistent network connection. Check the mini PC’s port speed as well as the router or switch port and cabling. A 2.5GbE port does not make the whole connection 2.5Gbps if another part of the network is limited to 1Gbps.

To make the server easier to find, reserve an address for it in your router’s DHCP settings, or configure networking through the operating system’s supported method. Router interfaces and OS network tools differ, so use the documentation for your specific devices and record the address you choose. If you use PXE boot or Wake-on-LAN, verify that the firmware and network support the feature; Orbsmart’s AW-16L guide, for example, specifies Ethernet for PXE boot (Orbsmart AW-16L support).
4. Add storage that fits the actual slot
Do not buy an SSD based only on the label “M.2.” Check the system’s official specification for the slot’s protocol—such as SATA or PCIe NVMe—physical length, and supported capacity, then match those requirements to the drive. MeLE lists M.2 SATA/NVMe support for the Quieter 2Q, while Supermicro specifies separate M.2 NVMe and SATA storage on the SYS-E100-13AD-H. Slot support differs by model (MeLE Quieter 2Q specifications; Supermicro SYS-E100-13AD-H specifications).

Plan separately for the operating system and the data you care about. A second drive, RAID arrangement, or mirrored storage can help with particular availability needs, but none should be treated as a substitute for a separate backup. Choose and test a backup method that fits your files and recovery needs.
5. Configure unattended power recovery
If the server should restart after a power cut, look in its firmware settings for an option that powers the system on when AC power returns. The label and location vary. Beelink’s ME mini instructions, for example, describe entering BIOS and navigating to Chipset → PCH-IO Configuration, setting “State After G3” to “S0 State,” and saving the change (Beelink ME mini product and support information). That path applies to the documented ME mini, not other PCs. Supermicro also lists power-on control after AC loss for its SYS-E100-13AD-H (Supermicro SYS-E100-13AD-H specifications).

6. Secure and maintain the server
- Install operating system and service updates using their official documentation.
- Use individual accounts and strong credentials, and limit administrative access to the people and devices that need it.
- Enable and configure the operating system’s firewall for the services you actually use.
- Avoid exposing administrative services directly to the public internet without a deliberately designed security setup.
- Keep a backup and confirm periodically that you can restore important files.
Ubuntu’s download page describes Ubuntu Pro support terms, including up to 15 years of security maintenance and extended support, and says personal use is free on up to five machines. Those terms are separate from the basic installation process; check the live page for current conditions (Ubuntu Server).
Model-specific details matter
Specifications and firmware instructions are not universal. The examples below illustrate why to verify the exact configuration before buying or installing.

What to expect from a fanless server
The cited manufacturer pages provide specifications, not comparable independent measurements of idle or full-load power, acoustic level, uptime, or long-term reliability for a home-server setup. Do not infer those results from “fanless” or from the component list. If noise, power use, or round-the-clock reliability is decisive, look for independent measurements of the exact configuration and workload before choosing.
