Give each family member an individual account, keep personal logins in private storage, and share household credentials only through a vault or collection with the right people. Set up recovery before anyone is locked out—and make sure it does not rely solely on the primary organizer.
Start with individual accounts and a backup contact
Choose a family plan only after checking its current features and eligibility. Name a primary owner and a trusted backup organizer or emergency contact before inviting everyone. That backup should know how to follow the recovery process, but should not need to know anyone else’s master password.

Each person should create and use their own account. For example, 1Password’s family onboarding gives each member an account password, Secret Key, Emergency Kit, and Private vault. That separates each person’s sign-in from shared household access. See 1Password’s family onboarding guidance.

Create a small shared space for credentials that the whole household genuinely needs, such as a shared utility account. Keep personal email, social accounts, and other individual credentials private unless there is a specific reason to share them. Access follows the vault or collection boundary: in 1Password, everyone with access to a vault can access its items, while additional vaults can be shared with selected people. Bitwarden likewise supports assigning collections so members can access only the items they need. 1Password: create and share vaults; Bitwarden: collection management.
- Invite members and have each person sign in on their own devices.
- Test that everyone can access their own account before migrating important credentials.
- Set up shared and restricted vaults or collections, then check membership.
- Move only selected items into shared storage. Verify who can access a vault before placing banking, identity, or other high-impact records there.
Plan for account recovery and emergency access separately
Account recovery helps someone regain access to their own account. Emergency access lets a preselected trusted contact request access under rules established in advance. These are different capabilities; do not assume either mechanism automatically grants access to every shared or organization-owned item. Check how your plan and account roles handle those items before relying on a feature for succession.

1Password Families: appoint another organizer
A 1Password family organizer can recover a family member’s account, but cannot recover their own. 1Password’s support guidance states: “You can’t recover your own account, so make sure you make at least one other family organizer.” Assigning a second organizer addresses the case where the primary organizer is locked out or unavailable. Read 1Password’s account recovery guidance.

Bitwarden: configure a trusted contact’s authority
Bitwarden Emergency Access lets a user designate trusted contacts who may request access to their vault with a configured permission level and wait time. The grantor must have an eligible paid account or organization; the contact needs a Bitwarden account, must accept the invitation, and must be confirmed. The invitation lasts five days. Read Bitwarden’s Emergency Access documentation.
| Permission | What it allows | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| View | Read access to the vault | The contact needs to retrieve information but should not take control of the account. |
| Takeover | Permanent read/write control after replacing the master password and disabling two-step login methods | Full account control is intended and the consequences are understood. |
Set a wait time that gives the account holder a reasonable opportunity to respond, and make sure the contact knows how to request access. Bitwarden describes Emergency Access as a trusted-contact feature for an individual vault; verify separately how it applies to shared or organization-owned items.

Store recovery information and instructions safely
Recovery is only useful if the right people can locate the necessary information without making it broadly accessible. 1Password recommends taking the Emergency Kit off the computer—for example, printing it or storing it on a USB flash drive—and keeping it somewhere safe. Do not treat a USB drive as required, or leave the only copy somewhere that becomes inaccessible in an emergency.

Write a short instruction for trusted family members covering who to contact, how to request access, any configured wait, and where recovery material is stored. Keep a copy outside the password manager so the directions remain available if the account is inaccessible. Do not put the only copy of a master password or sensitive recovery material in an unsecured note.
