For walking shots, handheld travel vlogs, and filming yourself, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is usually the better fit. For rain, water activities, rough handling, or mounting a camera on gear, choose the GoPro HERO13 Black. “GoPro Hero” can refer to several models; this comparison uses the HERO13 Black, GoPro’s flagship HERO camera in the lineup reviewed. Pocket 3 is also no longer DJI’s newest Pocket model: DJI’s store lists Pocket 4 and Pocket 4P alongside it.
Which camera fits your kind of trip?
| Travel use | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| City walks, landmarks, food, family moments, and talking to camera | DJI Osmo Pocket 3 | Its three-axis mechanical gimbal, rotating screen, and ActiveTrack 6.0 are suited to smooth handheld footage and solo filming. DJI also lists compatibility with DJI Mic 2 and Mic Mini transmitters. DJI Osmo Pocket 3 product page |
| Rain, snorkeling, beach activities, cycling, skiing, and point-of-view mounting | GoPro HERO13 Black | GoPro describes it as rugged, rates it waterproof to 33 feet (10 meters), and supports a range of mounts. It also includes HyperSmooth 6.0. GoPro HERO13 Black product page |
| Maximum resolution for detail or reframing | GoPro HERO13 Black | It records up to 5.3K at 60fps, compared with Pocket 3’s maximum of 4K. Resolution alone does not establish which camera produces better-looking footage. |
| Gimbal-led subject movement while keeping the camera dry | DJI Osmo Pocket 3 | The physical gimbal stabilizes camera movement and ActiveTrack is designed to follow a subject. Pocket 3 is not waterproof. DJI Osmo Pocket 3 product page DJI Osmo Pocket 3 support FAQ |
How stabilization and filming yourself differ
Pocket 3: a small gimbal camera
Pocket 3’s camera sits on a three-axis mechanical gimbal, which is its defining advantage for handheld movement. The 2-inch touchscreen rotates, making it practical to frame yourself, and ActiveTrack 6.0 is intended to keep a subject in view. Those features make it a natural choice for walking narration and solo travel clips, provided the camera stays dry. DJI Osmo Pocket 3 product page

HERO13 Black: stabilization in an action-camera design
HERO13 Black uses HyperSmooth 6.0 and is designed for rugged action use and mounting. GoPro’s interchangeable lens mods, magnetic latch mounting, GPS, and Enduro battery were highlighted in its September 4, 2024 launch announcement; those are product features, not independent evidence of a head-to-head performance advantage. GoPro’s September 4, 2024 launch announcement
Video modes: resolution is not the same as slow motion
DJI lists Pocket 3’s normal video recording up to 4K at 60fps and slow motion up to 4K/120fps. GoPro lists HERO13 Black up to 5.3K/60fps, as well as 4K/120fps, 2.7K/120fps, and 1080p/240fps. The 5.3K mode offers more pixels for detail or cropping; higher frame rates can be useful for slow motion. Neither specification, on its own, determines overall image quality. Water resistance is a decisive difference
GoPro rates HERO13 Black waterproof to 33 feet (10 meters). DJI explicitly says Pocket 3 is not waterproof, so do not treat it as suitable for rain or water activities without verified protection. Check each manufacturer’s guidance for the activity and conditions you plan to film. GoPro HERO13 Black product page DJI Osmo Pocket 3 support FAQ
A waterproof housing may be relevant if you want to snorkel with Pocket 3, but compatibility and depth rating must be confirmed for the specific housing before relying on it.

Battery figures are not a head-to-head runtime test
DJI reports 166 minutes of operating time for Pocket 3 under its stated test conditions: 1080p/24fps recording with the screen and Wi-Fi off. GoPro reports more than 1.5 hours at 4K30/5.3K30 and more than 2.5 hours at 1080p30 under its specified test setup. Because the recording modes and test conditions differ, these manufacturer figures should not be read as equivalent travel-day results. GoPro specifies a 1900mAh Enduro battery for HERO13 Black. A HERO13-specific spare may help on a long day, but GoPro says that battery is not compatible with older GoPro cameras. GoPro HERO13 Black product page

What to consider if buying a new DJI Pocket camera
DJI’s store lists Pocket 4 and Pocket 4P alongside Pocket 3, so Pocket 3 should not be described as the newest model. DJI’s Canadian store page compares Pocket 4 at up to 4K/240fps and a stated 240-minute operating time with Pocket 3 at up to 4K/120fps and 166 minutes. Those are figures from a region-specific store listing, not a universal runtime comparison; check the listing for your market before using them to decide. DJI Osmo Pocket Series store listing

Choose Pocket 3 when the trip is mostly dry and handheld
If walking footage, smooth pans, and filming yourself are the priority, Pocket 3’s gimbal, rotating display, and tracking are the more relevant features. It is a plausible single-camera choice when wet or rough use is occasional and can be avoided.

This is a trade-off, not a universal image-quality verdict: prioritize Pocket 3 if you chiefly want handheld vlogs and can keep the camera dry; prioritize HERO13 Black if exposed conditions or mounting are hard to avoid.
