A small friends server can start chatting with this basic setup; Community, Onboarding, Server Guide, and AutoMod are optional tools for groups that need them.
Create your server
- In Discord’s desktop app or browser, select Add a Server in the left-hand server list.
- Choose Create My Own to start from scratch, or choose a template. If starting from scratch, select whether the server is for a club or community or for friends.
- Enter a server name, optionally add an icon, then select Create. Discord says you can change the name and icon later, so you can begin without settling on final branding. See Discord’s server creation instructions.
Choose a small, clear channel layout
Start with the spaces people will actually use. For a typical group, that might mean an information or announcements channel, a general text channel, and a voice channel for live conversation. Use categories to group related channels if the list grows. These are practical starting points, not required Discord channels.

Make channel names and purposes easy to understand. A newcomer wondering “what am I supposed to do here?” or “why are there so many channels?” benefits more from a short, clearly labeled list than from a large layout built before the group needs it. Community servers can also use forum channels for organized discussions; Discord describes that option in its community setup guide.

Set roles and permissions
Roles determine what members can do across the server. The @everyone role provides the baseline permissions; add other roles only when people need different responsibilities or access, then assign them to the relevant members. Discord explains role setup in its Role Management 101 help article.

Be cautious with Administrator
The Administrator permission grants all permissions and bypasses channel restrictions. Give it only to people who need full server control. Discord’s permissions FAQ also explains how role hierarchy limits which members can manage other members.
Check channel access separately
Server-wide roles can be adjusted with permissions at the channel or category level. Confirm that private channels are visible only to their intended roles and that regular members can access the channels they need. If one channel has an access problem, adjust that channel’s permissions rather than granting broad server-wide permissions to solve it.
Invite members with the right link
Create an invite link using the permissions available to the server owner or invite managers. Discord documents instant, custom, temporary, and permanent invite types in its invite-link instructions. Before sharing a link widely, decide whether it should expire or have a use limit: a temporary or limited-use link gives you more control over how long it remains useful and how many people can join through it.
Choose between a friends server and a Community server
| Setup path | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Friends server | A small, private group that mainly needs places to chat | Begin with basic channels, a few necessary roles, and an invite. Community features are not required to start chatting. |
| Community server | A larger or public-facing group that needs more structured moderation or member onboarding | Community setup includes safety checks, including a verification setting. Some Community features have separate eligibility limits, so do not assume every server can use Server Discovery. |
Discord’s Community server setup guide describes the setup and safety requirements. Treat Community as a choice based on the group’s audience and needs, not a prerequisite for making a server.

Configure onboarding only if members need guidance
Community Onboarding lets new members choose roles and channels by answering questions. Discord’s published enablement criteria require at least seven default channels, with at least five allowing @everyone to view and send messages. Those are product requirements for Onboarding, not a requirement for an ordinary server. See the current Community Onboarding FAQ.
If you enable it, preview the experience as a new member before publishing. Keep the questions and choices focused: the goal is to direct people to useful channels and roles, not to make joining feel like a long setup form.
Add a Server Guide or AutoMod when they solve a real need
Server Guide
Server Guide is part of Onboarding. It supports a welcome sign, three to five new-member tasks, and resource pages. It can help a public or growing group explain where to begin, but a small server may be clearer with a concise welcome message and a few channels. Discord describes Server Guide in the Server Guide help article.
AutoMod
AutoMod provides content filters, including keyword and spam rules. Discord’s FAQ says rule changes are currently made on desktop by members with Manage Server or Administrator permissions; it does not document mobile rule editing as available. Check the AutoMod FAQ for the current controls.
Quick Recap
Quick setup checklist
- Create the server from scratch or from a template, and give it a working name.
- Add only the channels members need now; group them with categories if useful.
- Keep
@everyonepermissions appropriate, create only necessary roles, and reserve Administrator for full-control responsibilities. - Review private-channel access and ordinary-member access before inviting people.
- Choose an invite’s duration and usage limits before sharing it widely.
- Enable Community, Onboarding, Server Guide, or AutoMod only when the group’s scale or moderation needs justify them.
