How to Set Up a Discord Bot for a RedM Server: Roles, Commands, Whitelists and txAdmin

Learn how to connect Discord to a RedM server, configure a bot resource, map roles to CFX ACE permissions, add slash commands and whitelists, and decide when txAdmin is enough.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect Discord with a RedM server, you need four pieces working together: a Discord application with a bot user and token, an OAuth2 invite with the right scopes and permissions, a RedM resource configured with the bot and guild IDs, and (if you need in-game permissions) explicit mappings from Discord roles to CFX ACE groups. A bot created in Discord alone cannot read your server or enforce permissions.

For status displays and basic player administration, txAdmin may already provide what you need because it is included with FXServer. A dedicated resource such as CAS AdminBot is more appropriate when you need custom slash commands, staff-chat forwarding, Discord-role whitelists, role-to-ACE mappings, or event webhooks. The CAS AdminBot capabilities described here come from its documentation and are not an independent test of the resource.

What you need before starting

Have a working RedM server running on FXServer and know which server-data directory contains your server.cfg. txAdmin is shipped with FXServer; it is not installed as a separate resource. Its documented setup path is to launch FXServer, link a Cfx.re account, and deploy or select the server you intend to manage.

Prepare a private place for the bot token, a list of the Discord roles that should receive access, and a backup of production files and databases. If you are using a txAdmin recipe, use a new or empty deployment folder, inspect the recipe’s source and tasks, and verify its database and minimum-version requirements before allowing it to touch a live server.

Item Why it matters Check before continuing
FXServer/RedM installation The bot resource runs inside the server process. The server starts normally and you can identify its server-data folder.
Discord server (guild) The bot and its commands operate in a specific guild. You can manage the server and create or assign roles.
Bot application Provides the bot user, token, gateway intents and OAuth2 invite. You can access the Discord Developer Portal.
Resource or txAdmin requirement Determines which settings, intents and permissions are needed. Read the resource documentation and note its folder name and startup instructions.
Backups and isolated test location Protects a production server from a bad recipe, mapping or dependency. A known-good backup can be restored and testing will not overwrite production files.

Choose between txAdmin and a dedicated Discord resource

Decide what Discord must actually do before creating permissions. txAdmin’s documented Discord integration covers a persistent status embed, player-whitelist commands and player-information commands. That is often enough for a community that mainly wants a live status panel and basic administration.

A dedicated resource is justified when the Discord connection is part of your server’s permission and workflow system. CAS AdminBot documents staff-chat forwarding, Discord-role whitelist checks, slash commands, role-to-CFX-ACE mappings, status messages with placeholders, and webhook logging for categories such as bank, admin and death events.

Requirement txAdmin integration Dedicated resource
Live Discord status Supported with a configurable persistent embed. Can publish a resource-specific status message and placeholders.
Whitelist management Documented player-whitelist commands. Can enforce custom Discord-role whitelist logic.
Player information Documented player-information commands. Depends on the resource’s command set and code.
Custom slash commands Limited to the commands txAdmin exposes. Use the resource’s documented slash-command and role settings.
Discord roles as in-game permissions Not the main documented use. Can map Discord roles to CFX ACE groups when configured correctly.
Staff chat and event webhooks Not the primary documented feature set. CAS AdminBot documents forwarding and category-specific webhooks.
Operational burden Lower if your requirements fit the built-in integration. Higher: protect a token, maintain a resource and review its dependencies.

Do not run both systems with overlapping commands or permission rules without documenting which one is authoritative. Duplicate whitelist or role mappings can make it difficult to determine why a player was accepted or denied.

Create the Discord application and bot

1. Create the application

  1. Open the Discord Developer Portal and choose New Application.
  2. Give the application a recognizable name, then open its Bot section.
  3. Choose Add Bot and copy the bot token into a temporary password manager or other private storage. You will place it in the resource configuration later.

The token is equivalent to a password for the bot. Never put it in a public repository, paste it into a support chat, commit it in a screenshot, or include it in a downloadable configuration. If it is exposed, regenerate it in the Developer Portal and replace the old value everywhere the resource runs.

2. Enable only the gateway intents the resource requires

Under Privileged Gateway Intents, enable Server Members Intent and Message Content Intent when the selected resource requires them. A whitelist or role lookup generally needs member data; staff-chat forwarding or message-based features may require message content. Enabling an intent in the portal is not enough if the resource also has a setting that must request it at startup: both sides must agree.

3. Invite the bot with OAuth2 scopes

Generate an OAuth2 invite that includes the bot scope and the applications.commands scope. The first adds the bot user to your guild; the second allows slash commands to be registered and displayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some setup examples request the Administrator permission because it avoids missing-permission errors during a first install. Administrator is a broad grant, however, and should not be your default. Select only the permissions the resource actually needs, such as viewing channels, sending messages, embedding links, managing messages where documented, and using application commands. Create a dedicated bot role and place it above any roles it must manage, while keeping it below roles that should never be assigned by automation.

Install the RedM resource

1. Place the resource in the correct folder

Download the resource from its legitimate distribution source and place its complete folder in the RedM resources directory. Preserve the folder name expected by the resource documentation; changing it can break dependency paths or the startup entry. Do not mix files from different versions.

2. Add it to the server startup

Open server.cfg and add the resource using the startup syntax specified by that resource, normally an ensure line with the folder name. Keep the line near related dependencies so the order is easy to audit. Restart the server rather than assuming a hot reload has applied every configuration change.

3. Enter the core Discord settings

CAS AdminBot documents settings for the bot token and guild ID. The values must identify the same bot and the same Discord server where you installed it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DiscordBotToken = "keep-this-value-private"
DiscordGuildId = "your-guild-id"

Use the exact configuration syntax shipped with your resource; the example above illustrates the values, not a universal file format. A wrong guild ID can look like a command-registration failure even when the bot is online.

4. Configure features one at a time

Enable only the features you intend to operate, then restart and read the FXServer console for errors after each meaningful change. CAS AdminBot’s documented options include:

  • Staff chat: enable forwarding and provide the Discord staff-channel ID.
  • Role whitelist: enable Discord-role checks and identify the roles that satisfy the whitelist.
  • Slash commands: enable command handling and set moderator, administrator and founder role IDs as appropriate.
  • Status messages: configure the server name, player count and invite placeholders used in the bot’s status or message.
  • ACE mappings: associate Discord roles with the CFX groups that the server uses.
  • Webhooks: provide separate destinations for documented categories such as bank, admin and death events, if those logs are appropriate for your community.

Use channel and role IDs, not display names. Names can be changed or duplicated; IDs are the stable identifiers the integration expects. Copy them carefully and keep a private record of which ID belongs to each purpose.

Map Discord roles to RedM permissions with CFX ACE

Discord roles and RedM permissions are separate systems until you connect them. CFX ACE supports Discord identifiers in permission rules. A basic principal mapping has this form:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
add_principal identifier.discord:xxxx group.admin

Replace xxxx with the Discord identifier format required by your integration and replace group.admin with an ACE group your server actually defines. Do not assume that a role name automatically becomes an ACE group.

Build a least-privilege mapping

  1. List the actions each staff tier must perform, such as moderation, whitelist review or server administration.
  2. Create or reuse the smallest ACE group that grants those actions.
  3. Record the Discord role ID, the ACE group name and the person responsible for approving membership.
  4. Add only the required principal rules to the permissions configuration.
  5. Restart or reload using the method supported by your server, then test with one account from each tier.

Back up the permissions file before changing it. Audit role membership after staff changes, remove stale mappings, and check that a high-privilege Discord role cannot be obtained through an unrelated self-assignable role. A role-to-ACE mistake can grant in-game powers even when the RedM resource itself appears healthy.

Set up txAdmin’s built-in Discord status

If your goal is a live status panel rather than custom role automation, use txAdmin first. In a Discord channel where the txAdmin bot has Send Message permission, run:

/status add

The txAdmin documentation describes this as a persistent Discord embed that is updated every minute. After creating it, edit its content from txAdmin > Settings > Discord Bot. The embed can display server status and other information supported by a normal Discord embed.

Give the txAdmin bot access to the intended channel before running the command. If the command succeeds in one channel but not another, compare channel visibility and the bot’s Send Message permission rather than reinstalling the bot.

Verify the installation in a controlled order

  1. Process check: confirm the RedM resource starts without a configuration or dependency error in the FXServer console.
  2. Gateway check: confirm the Discord bot changes to online and remains online after a restart.
  3. Guild check: verify the bot is in the intended guild and can see the channels used by the integration.
  4. Command check: look for the configured slash commands in the target guild; registration can fail if the invite omitted applications.commands.
  5. Permission check: test one low-privilege role and one administrator role, confirming that each can perform only its intended actions.
  6. Whitelist check: test an account with the required role and another without it, using a non-production test player if possible.
  7. Logging check: trigger a permitted test event and confirm that the appropriate webhook receives it without exposing private identifiers or tokens.
  8. Recovery check: verify you know how to disable the resource and restore the previous configuration before enabling it for all players.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

The bot is offline

  • Recheck the token character-for-character and confirm it has not been regenerated.
  • Confirm the resource is actually started and that its folder name matches the startup entry.
  • Verify the Discord application still has an active bot user.
  • Read the FXServer console for a dependency, syntax or gateway error before changing permissions.

Slash commands do not appear

  • Confirm the invite included both bot and applications.commands.
  • Check that the bot is in the intended guild and can access the channel where you are looking.
  • Restart the resource after changing command settings and allow Discord time to refresh the guild command list.
  • Verify that the configured guild ID is the guild in which you installed the bot.

Members or message content are unavailable

Enable the required privileged intents in the Developer Portal and ensure the resource requests the same intents. A role whitelist can fail when member access is unavailable even though ordinary messages and the bot’s online presence work.

Whitelist or ACE mapping fails

  • Check the guild ID and every role ID; copied names are not substitutes for IDs.
  • Verify the Discord identifier prefix and format used in the ACE rule.
  • Confirm the ACE group name exists and grants the expected commands.
  • Test with a freshly synchronized role assignment and inspect the server console for denied or malformed principals.

The txAdmin status embed fails

Make sure the txAdmin bot has Send Message permission in the chosen channel and run /status add there. Then open txAdmin > Settings > Discord Bot to edit the embed. If it works in a different channel, the original channel’s permission overwrite is the likely cause.

A recipe damages an existing server

Stop the deployment, preserve logs, and restore the known-good backup. Do not rerun the recipe over production while guessing at its task order. Review every task, dependency and version requirement and deploy it first into a new or empty target folder.

Security and maintenance practices

Protect secrets

Limit access to the token, configuration files, server console and webhook URLs to server administrators. If your hosting platform supports protected environment variables or server convars, use them instead of placing secrets in files that are routinely shared. Rotate the token immediately after any suspected disclosure.

Review permissions quarterly and after staff changes

Compare Discord role membership with the ACE mapping and the resource’s moderator, administrator and founder settings. Remove former staff, unused webhooks and channels the bot no longer needs. Keep the bot’s role below protected roles and avoid Administrator unless a documented feature genuinely requires it.

Keep a change record

Back up server.cfg, permissions files, resource configuration and any database touched by a recipe. Record the date, change, operator and rollback method. Test upgrades in an isolated deployment folder before applying them to the production RedM server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recommended deployment patterns

Small community needing only status and basic administration

Start with txAdmin’s built-in integration. Invite the txAdmin bot with narrowly scoped permissions, run /status add in the selected channel, and use the documented player-management commands. Avoid adding a second bot until you can name a requirement txAdmin does not meet.

Community using Discord as its staff control plane

Use a dedicated resource configured with a private token, member and message intents where required, staff-channel forwarding, role-based whitelist checks and explicit slash-command roles. Add ACE mappings only for the staff tiers that need in-game powers, and test every tier with a separate account.

Server with extensive audit requirements

Use the resource’s documented webhook categories selectively. Separate sensitive event logs from general moderation channels, restrict who can read them, and verify that webhook failures do not prevent the RedM server from starting. Keep a copy of the configuration and a rollback plan outside the live resource directory.

Final decision checklist

  • Do you need only a status embed and basic player commands? Use txAdmin first.
  • Do you need custom slash commands, staff chat, role whitelists, role-to-ACE mappings or event webhooks? Evaluate a dedicated resource.
  • Have you enabled only the intents and Discord permissions the selected feature set requires?
  • Are the token, guild ID, role IDs, channel IDs and ACE groups documented and backed up?
  • Did you test in an isolated folder or non-production server before changing live files?
  • Can you disable the integration and restore the previous configuration quickly?

The Bottom Line

A reliable RedM Discord integration is a permissions project as much as a bot project: create the application, protect its token, invite it with the correct scopes, configure the resource with exact guild and role IDs, and test each permission tier. Use txAdmin when its built-in status and administration features are sufficient; add a dedicated resource only for capabilities you can define and maintain.
